Charles McClung of SC & GA

CHARLES McCLUNG
OF SOUTH CAROLINA, GEORGIA and ARKANSAS

3-3 CHARLES McCLUNG
SC303

Charles McClung, the third known child of Jamima Crawford McClung was born ca 1810 in South Carolina. He was listed in the 1850 census of Newton County, Georgia as a wheelwright. Two doors down from him was David McClung who md Mary Johnson. David was a son of James and Mary Reece McClung. The others in this county in 1850 were also of this family. However, the age of Charles precludes him from also being a child of James and Mary Reece McClung. He may be a nephew of James.

The family of Josiah (son of Jemima Crawford McClung) has tradition of a Charles McClung who was an uncle. In fact, Josiah named his first son, Charles. The firstborn son is usually named after the man's father in the McClung family. This could lead one to wonder if Jemima's husband, who died, was named Charles and this man was one of their children.

Charles moved from S.C. to Georgia before 1830. He is enumerated there on p. 23 (have not yet read this) Perhaps it was because of his good reports that the rest of the family moved into that county about 1837. He was also listed in the 1840 Newton Co. census with two sons and three daughters. Some of them do not appear in the 1850 census. Below is a listing of his children as taken from these censuses. Debra Dean is working on this family. Charles moved to Arkansas where he and Needham are listed as head of households in the 1860 census of Hempstead County. Charles and his brother/brothers had a falling out and they separated and went to Texas. In 1860 N.W. McClung is listed with Mahala and Wesley Plunkett in Ouchita Co., AR. It is possible that he was enumerated while visiting with them and thus found twice in 1860.

Margaret, wife of Charles, was also born in 1810 in S.C. We have not found a marriage record in Newton County,Georgia so they may have married in a different county or in S.C. where the marriages were not registered in courthouses.

By 1860 the family is in Hempstead County, Arkansas where they are living in Caranse Township. The post office is given as Albany (page 832). There is a six year gap in ages of children and some are no longer given indicating that there may have been pestilence that took the lives of some small children. In some cases, it may just be a problem with the recording of the names. Cemetery records of Hempstead County, AR need to be searched as well as those in Haralson County, GA.

By 1870 they cannot be found in Arkansas or Texas. Josiah was in Smith County Texas as was Lundy and Joseph McClung. OK did not have a census until 1900. The Civil War changed many lives and we do not know who might have been killed during this time. We've lost James, Needham and Charles Jr.

1-4 (dau) McCLUNG
SC601

The first child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born 1825-30 probably in South Carolina. She is in the household in the 1840 census.

2-4 (son) McCLUNG
SC602

The second child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1828 probably in SC. We have not yet found the name of this child or at least, not able to connect him yet to this family.

3-4 NANCY McCLUNG
SC603

The third child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1830 in Georgia.

4-4 JAMES M. McCLUNG
SC604

The fourth child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1836 in Georgia.

5-4 (dau) McCLUNG
SC605

The fifth child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1838 in Georgia. She is not listed with the family in the 1850 census so she may have married by then.

6-4 NEEDHAM W. McCLUNG
SC606

The sixth child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1837-40. He was listed with the family in the 1850 census of Newton County, Georgia. By 1860 he was listed with Charles's family in Hempstead County, and it appears that he was also enumerated with visiting his aunt, Mahala, in Ouachita Co., AR. He had not yet married. We do not find him in 1880 in either AR or TX.

7-4 JANE McCLUNG
SC607

The seventh child of Charles and Margaret McClung was a twin to Needham W. We find her with the family in 1850 but not thereafter. She had probably married.

8-4 ELIZABETH McCLUNG
SC608

The eighth child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1842. They had moved to Hempstead County, AR by 1860. Her marriage is registered there:

McCLUNG, Elizabeth to James Matterson Pirtle; married 11 Nov 1868.

9-4 DAVID LEE McCLUNG
SC609

The ninth child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1844 in Georgia (probably Newton County). He married Sarah H. Taylor at Hope, Hempstead Co., AR, 14 Jan 1872. Her parents were Hope Zachariah Taylor and Matilda Peters. Hope, AR was named after her father. By 1880 they are listed in Hopkins County, Texas. He gave his age as 27 and hers as 25. We think he must have shaved off ten years. He gave his birthplace as Georgia and father as SC and mother, NC (that would be Margaret).

David and Sarah had three children at this time:
Eulah McClung b. 1875 in AR
Aleck McClung b. 1876 in TX
Willie McClung b. 1879 in TX.

Ale TAYLOR was living with them and working on the farm. He was 21 years old and born in Arkansas, as was Sarah.

Hopkins County, Texas is about 150 miles down Hiway 67 from Hope, AR. Charles's brother, Josiah settled in Smith County, Texas, which is two counties south of Hopkins. David Lee is still in Hopkins County in 1900 but he is the only McClung in that county at that time (P. 98B). They have only five children in the home at that time but there is a ten year gap between the last two which might indicate that one or two babies died during that time. Perhaps a family Bible could be found to fill in.

Debra Dean is working on this family. Her line is through David. We hope to hear from other descendants who will help us get this line worked out.

The tenth child of Charles and Margaret McClung was born ca 1848 in Newton County, Georgia. He does not appear with the family on the 1860 census of Hempstead Co., AR. He would not have been old enough to have left the family so had probably died by then.
