Josiah McClung, the son of Jemima Crawford McClung and her husband was born 29
Oct 1804. He is probably third generation from the immigrant. He stated in the 1850 census
that he was born in SC. Newberry county is the
only place we have found McClungs so far. Edgefield and Abbeyville Counties need to be
visited.
Josiah married 1) Mary Fletcher in Monroe County, Georgia 23 Aug 1825. She was
born 11 Dec 1813 in S.C. They had one child, Charles.
In 1830, the census index states that he was in Harris County, p. 187. He was still there for the 1840 enumeration. (p. 252). However, Jemima was in Newton Co. listed as head of household on the same page as a Charles, Mary and Solomon McClung. We will have a better idea after seeing the enumeration but Solomon was the son of James and Mary Reece, so the Mary McClung was probably the mother of Solomon. Carl McClung reported that Josiah had a brother named Charles. Josiah probably named his son after this man.
Josiah married 2) Margaret Elizabeth Rister 6 Oct 1834 in Harris County,GA. (need documentation).
She was born 11 Dec 1813 in Newberry Co., S.C. She was the daughter of George and Mary
Shannon Rister from Edgefield District, SC.
Keith Fletcher has sent information on the Rister/Fletcher Connection.
Josiah moved with his family to Dallas County, Arkansas where he was enumerated in the Moro
township 2 Oct 1850. Their daughter, Amy was born there three years earlier so
the family probably arrived there in 1846. Josiah gave as his occupation: Cabinet Maker. His
son, Charles, who lived next to him also gave that as his occupation. Josiah had Augustus
Chambers with him as a laborer. This man did not know his place of birth.
The interesting thing about this enumeration was that the next door down from Charles was
Wesley Plunket b. 1815 in SC and his wife, Mahala b. 1815 in SC. Living with them is
Jemima Crawford McClung age 70 by then. Jemima's husband appears to have died before 1840.
The family arrived in Smith Co., Texas by 1856 when their oldest daughter married. Josiah served as a postmaster at
Mount Carmel, Texas from 21 June 1853 to 23 Jan 1867. His children served for periods
after that: Lundy, Amy, and Josie. Josiah continued his work in cabinet making and
established a shop at Mt. Carmel. He used horse power, 5,000 feet of pine to produce
30 bedsteads, 6 bureas, 4 safes, 80 chairs. During the Civil War Josiah established a chair
factory about 6 miles north of Tyler. He made chairs using maple posts, hickory for rungs,
and oak for the backs. He put in split bottoms for seats which were thin white oak or hickory
plit and woven together. He used no glue at all in his work. The slat backs were held by
woodin pins.(from county historian, Will Woldert, Memoirs, p. 541).
Josiah died 7 Nov 1888 in Smith Co. Texas. Margaret died 11 July 1889. They were both
buried in the Harris Creek Cemetery in Smith Co., TX. Josiah died testate having signed his will
in 1888 in Smith Co., TX.
We find the family in the 1860, 70, and 80 censuses in Smith County, Texas. From the census
records we are able to compile a family listing. We hope descendants will add to this
record.
Probably the first child of Josiah and Mary Fletcher McClung was born ca 1828 in Georgia.
He married Martha Vaughn 4 July 1850 in Dallas Co., AR. By 1870 there were no children listed.
We know his occupation was a cabinet maker. Perhaps he worked in Josiah's shop. There is a
large gap in ages between Charles and Mary because Josiah's first wife died.
Possibly the second child of Josiah and Mary Fletcher McClung was born in Harris County,
GA.. Carl McClung states: Josiah had a son named Michael M.T. McClung. Very little is
known about him. He is mentioned in Josiah's will.
Bryan Terry writes:Michael T McClung was born in Harris Co., Ga in 1830. He married Ann Z.
Pipkin in Oauchita Co., Ark. I do not have a date on the marriage. His only child was
Nancy J. born 1852. He was on the 1850 Oauchita Co. census, I believe he died in the Civil War, but
have not gotten his military record to verify that. Ann and Nancy show up on the 1870
Smith Co., TX census, and Nancy marries William T. Coker in Smith Co. in 1870. Ann is
living with Nancy and her family in 1880 in Hopkins Co., TX.
Bryan Terry writes: He is on the 1860 Henderson Co., Texas listed as N.T. McClung.
Probably the census taker mistook N for M. Anyway he is listed with his wife Ann and
daughter Nancy (who was eight at the time). Also, listed with him is his brother-in-law
L.D. Pipkin. This is the same Ann and Nancy that shows up on the 1870 Smith Co., Texas
census just before Nancy marries William T. Coker. Apparently Michael had died before 1870,
probably in the Civil War. He was in Co. I of the 6th Texas Cavalry. A side note L.D.
Pipkin was also in the 6th Texas but a different company.
The only child of Michael M. T. and Ann Z. Pipkin McClung was born 1852, probably in Arkansas.

in the 1900 census next door to James F. Their children in the household in 1900 were Lela, Brown,
