JOHN LLOYD AND MATTHEW ALLIN FAMILY
(163) ANNA C.5 STANCLIFT (Lemuel4, Comfort3, James2, James1)
Daughter of Lemuel and Mehitable [Goff] Stanclift born Sangerfield, Oneida County, NY Thursday Feb. 12, 1795(1), died Lincoln, Placer County, CA Feb. 2, 1889 at the home of her son, Otis, married 1. JOHN CRILLEY LLOYD and before 1830 she had obtained a divorce from him and married 2. MATTHEW ALLIN(2) born Peru, Clinton County, NY Jan. 15, 1800(3), died in Utah.
Her brother David described Anna as "quite a belle and a real beauty". David said of John Lloyd only that "he proved not to be an agreeable companion"
Matthew Allin was a member of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. One of Joseph Smith's revelations caused him to lead his followers from New York to Kirtland in the Western Reserve of Ohio in February 1831. They sought to establish a new community and a center for the Church.
It is not certain whether Matthew was a follower of Joseph Smith in New York or became a follower after the Mormon exodus from New York. Subsequent records indicate their first child was born in PA in 1831. Matthew and Anna Allin moved to Kirtland Township, Geauga County, OH (now Lake County). On Dec. 21, 1836 Matthew Allin was ordained an Elder in the Church(4) In 1837 they were on record as having been blessed by Joseph Smith
In 1837 Matthew purchased and paid Personal Property Tax on two parcels of land on the western side of the town of Kirtland. On Jan. 17 1837 for the sum of $300.00 Matthew Allin bought two tracts of land of 9 acres each from Samuel Canfield, who had purchased the land from Titus Street. Titus Street was one of the first proprietors of the Connecticut Western Reserve having purchased a $22,846.00 share in these lands(5). The lands were located just outside of the town boundary and were part of Lots # 29 and # 42(6). In this same year the Bank established by Joseph Smith failed. The currency which that bank had issued became worthless(7) and the community suffered a financial depression. The Mormon community was also experiencing extreme hostility from neighbors in the Kirtland area which precipitated their abandonment of the Kirtland locale and the trek to Missouri and Illinois.
On Jan. 9, 1838, just one year after the purchase, Matthew Allin sold his property in Kirtland, at a significant loss, to Farr Winslow for $250.00(8).
"Finally in 1838, internal strife and persecution from non-mormons caused the Saints to abandon their homes, shops, farms, schools, and beautiful temple. Joseph Smith and his family were among the first to leave Kirtland for Missouri in January 1838. Small groups of Saints soon followed, and the last group-- the five-hundred-member Kirtland Camp-- left in early July."(9) Perhaps the Matthew Allin family then made the journey west with Brigham Young and the other followers of Joseph Smith. Matthew was said to have died in Utah.
While the atmosphere in Kirtland was not always friendly to the disciples of Joseph Smith, the people in their destined home in Missouri were proving even more antagonistic. Perhaps Anna was uncomfortable in these hostile environments. By 1850 she returned to her family in Erie County, PA.
In that year Anna Allin appeared on the 1850 Census living with or possibly just visiting her sister, Sally [Stanclift] Mix, and her husband Hiram Mix. She must have remained or returned to Erie County, PA for some period of time as David Stanclift said in his Memoirs "I have no knowledge of their whereabouts except Otis in Lincoln, Placer County, California. They were nice well behaved children when living here and I was well pleased with Otis and Leonard when here once for a visit to Tryphenia. The last I heard from her she was married and living in Chicago. I have not heard from Leonard since he left here last."
