Revised 15 March 2009DANIEL TRIPP FAMILY
(82) MARY5 STANCLIFF "Polly" (Stanbrough P.4, James3, William2, James1)
Daughter of Stanbrough Perigrine and Sibbel [Davis] Stancliff born Feb. 15, 1786, baptized Dec. 30, 1792 at the St. Johns Church, St Johnsville ontgomery County, NY and sponsored by J. Jost and Maria Snell(1). She was called Polly and specifically designated in a Court Record as a daughter of Stanbrough Perigrine Stancliff(2). On other records and Census, she appears as Mary. She married in Canada before 1804, DANIEL TRIPP born 1775-1788. He was in Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada in 1804(3), and moved to Elk Township, Athens County, OH by 1820.(4)
The family lived Washington Township, Jackson County, OH where Daniel died in 1828. Administration on his Estate was granted July 3, 1828 to Mary Tripp and Andrew McPheeter, who was her brother-in-law. William Bears, Jacob Anthony and Daniel Duhadway, another brother-in-law, were sureties(5). In 1830 Mary was living next door to a William Tripp(6) who was born between 1800 and 1810 and could be the husband of her deceased sister, Olive [Stancliff] Tripp.
A Chancery Court Record(7) heard in session, April 3, 1833, and containing a Bill which was written April 5, 1832 provided information on this family. Before his death Daniel Tripp had purchased on Mar. 1, 1828 land from John James located in Washington Township, Jackson County and was described as SW of Section 34 in Town 8, Range 18. Daniel Tripp had agreed to make three payments plus interest to John James and had given a mortgage deed to Mr. James. The first payment was due in November 1829 and when it was not forthcoming John James took the case to court. In 1832 the debt was still unpaid and the court records cited all heirs of Daniel Tripp. Ruel, Lucinda, David were listed as children, Benjamin, Sybell, William C. and Esther were specified as minor children "under the age of twenty one and eighteen respectively", and Betsy had married after father's death to Samuel Miller. The Court ordered the land to be sold to pay Mr. James.
Mary or Polly [Stancliff] Tripp was deceased by Feb. 5, 1839 when her children were named as heirs of Stanbrough Stancliff as follows, Reuel Tripp of Jackson County, David Tripp residence unknown, Benjamin Tripp of Illinois, Betsy and Sibyl Tripp residence unknown, William and Esther Tripp residence unknown.
CHILDREN: Daniel and Polly [Stancliff] Tripp
1. RUEL TRIPP born OH 1805. He was termed "an idiot" in court papers and was included with minor children when a guardian was appointed for the litigation. In 1860 he lived in the household of Bartemus French in Jackson, Jackson County, OH(8).
2. BETSY TRIPP probably born about 1808. According to the same Court record as cited above Betsy married SAMUEL MILLER after father's death in 1828 and before 1832.
3. DAVID TRIPP born OH before 1811(9), married 1. Jackson County, OH by James Dempsey JP Mar. 13, 1832 MARGARET SCHRECK(10). She was probably the daughter of Garrett and Ann Schreck with whom the newlyweds had Land and Property transactions soon after their marriage.
