The photo of this handsome couple was made in 1895
in the Hebbel Studio,
perhaps celebrating the couple's engagement. In the 1900 census enumeration,
the Happels are found in the ninth ward of Baltimore City. Charles, who
was
28 had been born in October 1871 in Maryland. He was a day laborer who
had married
four years earlier. Mary was born in August 1870 and was the mother of
five children.
Both Charles and Mary were first generation American-born children of German
parents.
Their five children included: Emma, Joseph, Rosa, Theresa & Ferdinand.
Joseph & Rosa were fraternal twins.
This great photo was submitted by Kristen Keyes, a great great granddaughter.
