Baltimore City Nineteenth-Century Photos

John McKenna Grocery

Here has got to be one of the most fascinating photos submitted to this site. I am only sorry that I cannot post it in its full original size so that more details are visible. The sign to the left of the left-hand door says "fashionable dressmaker." The window display consists of cans and bottles as well as a basket and a few posters. The left most poster contains a large eagle while the one next to it has two women on it. I cannot make out the signs in the right-hand doorway.

Donna reports that the man in the picture is John McKenna. He apparently took over James Gallagher's store at 79 Eutaw Street (there is a cornerstone with the street name just above the sign on the right). This photo, by an unknown studio, was made in 1873. You can see him in close-up in his studio photograph by clicking here!
