NARA Document, Washington DC: "Declaration for an Original Pension of a Mother", State of Tennessee, County of Bledsoe. On this 30th day of October, 1883, appeared before me, F. W. Mercer, deputy clerk of Bledsoe County, Nancy Durham, a resident of Pikeville, county of Bledsoe, in the State of Tennessee, aged 73 years, making the following declaration in order to obtain pension provided by Acts of Congress granting pensions to dependent Mothers; That she is a widow of Cyril Durham, and Mother of Houston P. Durham who entered under the name of Houston P. Durham at Pikeville, Tennessee, on the 20th day of February, 1865, in Company G, Mounted Infantry, in the war of 1861, who died at Dalton,Georgia from and by reason of an attack of measles and fever contracted while in the line of his duty as said soldier on the 24th day of April 1865; that said son, Houston P. Durham left neither widow or child under sixteen years of age surviving; that she was greatly dependent upon said son for support; that her husband, the aforesaid Cyril Durham, aged 56 years at the time of her said son's death and died in 1877, and that he was afflicted with rheumatism and breast complaint before and at the time of said son's, Houston P. Durham, death and until his death in 1877 as aforesaid, and was not able to support claimant by his work; and he was able to work but little, that there were surviving at date of said son's death his brothers and sisters, who were under sixteen years of age, as follows: William T. Durham, born August 19, 1850, Franklin P. Durham born May 19, 1852, and Tennessee N. Durham, born August 18, 1857; that she has not heretofore recevied or applied for a pension; that she hereby appoints Ben Holladay, Jr. of Washington DC, her Attorney, to prosecute the above claim; that her residence is in the county of Bledsoe, State of Tennessee, and that her Post Office address, is Pikeville, Bledsoe County, Tennessee. This document was witnessed by Charles Ferguson and A. J. Childers and Nancy Durham put her "x" mark.

"General Affidavit" - State of Tennessee, County of Bledsoe

In the matter of Mother's pension claim no. 311907 (?) of Nancy Durham, mother of Houston P. Durham. Personally came before me, a deputy clerk of county court and for aforesaid County and State, Nancy Durham, citizen of theTown of Pikeville, County of Bledsoe, State of Tennessee, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid case, as follows: that she is unable to furnish the testimony of any physician as to the physical condition of her husband that he was peculiar in regards to doctors, he would not take the medicines of physicians or allow them called to see him or any of his family and that he was his own and his family's physician, having his own books and medicines and that during their married life he never had a physician but one time and that was ____ ____ ____ _____ ____ _____ _____ _____ physician, Dr. Scruggs, was called without his knowledge and while delirious and that when he got better so as to know what was going on, he had the physician's medicine thrown out and would take no more of it, and that she does not know the whereabouts of said doctor and therefore she can furnish the testimony of no physician. And claimant further states that the land assessed to her husband in the year 1862 was land contracted for by him but which he never paid for and now his widow, owned it.

Thomas Cooksey, son of Philip Cooksey, late of Charles County Maryland, was ordered to serve Richard Estep until he became 21 years old. This deed was dated April 19 1698 and Thomas will become 9 years old in August. He was to lodge with Richard who would take care of him and his needs".
