In the name of God, Amen. I, Toliver Craig, of Woodford County, being in a low state of health but of perfect disposing mind and memory, calling to mind the uncertanity of this mortal life, do constitute this my last will and testament in manner and form following:
First and principally I recommend my soul to God that gave it, and my body to be interred after my death at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named.
Secondly and as for the wordly estate the Lord has blessed my with, I lend two negroes named Warrick and Teanor and a horse and a best bed and furniture unto my beloved wife, Mary Craig, during her natural life and after her death to be equally divided among my children hereafter named as the rest of my estate.
Thirdly I desire that my children all be made equal with the one that received the most of my estate; that is, what it was worth when they received it.
Fourthly I desire that the balance of my estate both real and personal be equally divided between my nine children, namely: John Craig, Toliver Craig, Lewis Craig, Joseph Craig, Elijah Craig, Benjamin Craig, Jeremiah Craig, Jossie Faulkner and Elizabeth Cave.
Fifthly it is my will and desisre that my above named children make John Sanders and Sarah Singleton part equal with theirs in property at the praise value.
Sixthly, it is my desire that my sons, John Craig, Toliver Craig, and Lewis Craig do execute this my last will and testament.

At a Court held for Woodford County at the Courthouse thereof on Monday the 5th day of August, 1799, this last will and testament of Toliver Craig, deceased, was presented in Court and proved by the oathes of John Cooke, Anthony Lindsey, and Davie Baldwin three subscribing witnesses thereto and was ordered to be recorded.

Confirmed by three of his grandsons to have been the illegitimate son of a Taliaferro and a woman named Craig -- one saying Jane Craig, early records show Taliver Craig "of Corbin," in Virginia. He sired a large family, several of them becoming distinguished Baptists preachers. They all moved to Kentucky, including the elderly Taliaferro Craig and his wife, who seemed to have lived close to their son Capt. John Craig. Taliferro was probably living on Clear Creek in Woodford County when he died. His will was recorded in Woodford County, Kentucky.

In his will, dated 15 Dec 1790, Toliver mentions "my nine childr en: John, Toliver, Lewis, Joseph, Elijah, Benjamin and Jeremiah Craig, Jossie Faulkner and Elizabeth Cave". In 1782 Tolliver was a defender of Bryant's Station. His wife was the oldest of the 20 women who carried water from the spring to the beseiged fort. The Indians were in ambush and the courage of the women made the defence possible. The Lexington Chapte r (DAR) has memorialized this historic event. Listed in the 1790 census Fayette County and Woodford County, Kentucky. Notes for Toliver Craig: The descendants are split as to Tollivers' parentage. Old family lore says that Tolliver was the so n of Jane Craig and John Craig and that Joh n Craig died shortly before the trip to America. Recent events seem to point to t he fact that Jane was impregnated by Captain Taliaferro on the trip to America. Tollivers' grandson believed this to be the case. *** A legend exists that a ship sailing to America fro m an Irish port had on board a sailor named Toliver Craig who was washed overboard and lost at sea. The following day a baby was found on the ship, but no one claimed to be his parents. After a few days the crew decided to name him after their comrade who had been lost at sea. *** Father of the famous Virginia Traveling Church preachers, Joseph, Elijah and Lewis Craig. They were in Virginia about 1781, then moved to Kentucky. They settled in the Elkhorn area, previously Bourbon County, now George town, Scott County, Kentucky. *** Toliver and Mary probably married in King William County (records are burned). Mary seems to have inherited land from her father on Terry's Run in Spotsyl vania, 200 acres of which they sold to her brother in 1747. He seems to have been an illiterate farmer, and his sons illiteracy caused some problems when they began preaching. His many land transactions and gifts of land to his family suggest that he was both very shrewd and generous. They lived in Spotsylva nia (now Orange) County, Virginia. He and his sons were converted to the (Separatist) Baptist faith in 1765/6 by David Thomas and Samuel Harris, though Thomas discouraged "such weak , illiterate persons" (Lewis, Elijah) attempting to teach." He traveled to Kentucky with sons John and Jeremiah in 1778. He sold William Wiatt 50 (one source says 500) acres in Berkeley Parish for 20,000 currency 19 Jul 1781. Then he moved with the "traveling church" to Fayette County, near Lexington in the Virginia frontier, later Kentucky, patenting 41,483 acres in Woodford County on the Kentucky River in 1794. He and his family were present at Bryan Station when they were attacked by the British and Indians. From Lewis Sanders genealogy: "Two brothers named Taliaferro, supposed to be italians, came to Virginia in the beginning of the 18th Century. One of the brothers was a seafaring man, engaged in the trade from Virginia to Scotland, this brother brought over on one of his trips from Scotland, a young woman, named Craig.--this young woman had a son by Capt. Toliver, which she named Toliver Craig. This is the head and orgin of the numerous Craig family, now spread throughout Kentucky and some adjoining states."
With this in mind, John Craig may not be his true father.

A charcoal portrait, believed to be her, hangs in the DAR headquarters at Duncan's Tavern, in Paris, Kentucky. Gen. J. P. Hawkins stated that Polly was buried, with her son Elijah Craig, at Great Crossings Church, with the inscription, "Mother of the Many Faithful."

(Only CRAIG names copied) BRYAN STATION TIDBITS "The defenders of Bryan Station at the time of the siege, which began late in the night of August 15th and lasted till August 17th, 1782. When the morning of August 16th dawned, the settlers apparently sensed the presence of the Indians for some reason. At first alarm two men, Thomas Bell and Nicholas Tomlinson slipped away to get help from Lexington. The Indians still did not make their presence known, not wanting the pioneers to know their strenghht (sic) yet and thus make a surprise attack. Water was always a must and with that they thought to be able to hold out from a seige. This was a task for the women generally, and they went about it even in this face of danger.
