William de Warren (Plantagenet), Earl of Warren and Surrey, sided at the commencement of the contest between King John and the barons and for a long time thereafter with his royal kinsman, but eventually joined the banner of Lewis of France. On the death of King John, however, he returned to his allegiance and swore fealty to King Henry III, at the solemn nuptials of which monarch he had the honour of serving the king, at the banquet, with his royal cup in the Earl of Arundel's stead, who, being in minority, could not perform that office as he had not been girt with the sword of knighthood. His lordship m. 1st, Lady Maud de Albini, dau. of the Earl of Arundel, but by her ladyship had no issue. He m. 2ndly, Maud, dau., of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, and widow of Hugh Bigot, Earl of Norfolk, by whom he had John, his successor, and Isabel. He d. in 1240, and was s. by his son, John de Warren (Plantagenet), Earl of Warren and Surrey. WILLIAM (DE WARENNE), EARL OF SURREY, son and heir. On 12 May 1202 the King advised his father's tenants that he had taken his homage. On 19 April 1205 he had a grant of Grantham and Stamford, Lincs, to compensate him for the loss of his lands in Normandy. In 1206 he owed 100 marks for an advance made to him in Poitou, and 100 marks for robes provided for him there. On 30 November 1206 he was directed to escort the King of Scots to York. On 20 August 1212 the custody of the castles of Bamburgh and Newcastle-on-Tyne was committed to him and 2 others. In May 1213 he was with the King at Dover, and was a party to John's submission to the Pope and resignation of his crown. In January 1214/5 he was among those who came to London with the Archbishop to discuss grievances, but on 10 May 1215 he was security for the King in his promise of concessions to the barons. On 24 May 1215 he took part with the barons in the seizure of London; and on 15 June at Runnymede was one of those who advised the King to grant Magna Carta; and he afterwards swore to observe the mandates of the 25 barons. On 16 May 1216 he was appointed Warden of the Cinque Ports; but soon afterwards he joined Louis of France. On 22 June 1217, however, he had renewed his fealty to the King and on 24 August took part in the naval battle in which Eustace the Monk was defeated and slain. In 1217 he was sheriff of Surrey. In February 1217/8 there was a dispute pending between the Earl and Engelard de Cigoigny as to the county of Surrey. In 1220 he was appointed to meet the King of Scots at Berwick after Whitsun, and in 1221 was granted the scutage of Biham. In February 1222/3 he was on pilgrimage to St. James (Santiago), in October 1223 was in North Wales, and in November on pilgrimage to St. John. In August 1224 he was with the King at Bedford. On 5 April 1225 he had ceased to hold the castle of Hastings. On 30 June he was warned that he must observe the King's liberties. In 1227 he joined the Earl of Cornwall at Stamford in his revolt against the King; but at Christmas he was with the King at York. In 1229 he was about to make a voyage on the King's service. In June 1230 he was taking an assize of arms in Sussex, and in July was warden of the ports and seacoast of Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk; and in the same year he was appointed a justiciar of England. In August 1231 he was in Wales. In February 1231/2 he was called to the Council to treat on matters concerning Llewelin, prince of Aberfraw; and in the same year was one of the four Earls appointed to keep Hubert de Burgh in custody at Devizes Castle. In June 1234 he, with another, was granted the castles of Bramber and Knapp. At the Coronation of Queen Eleanor at Westminster, 20 January 1235/6, he acted as Butler in place of his son-in-law, the Earl of Arundel (i); and he claimed unsuccessfully to carry one of the Swords. In 1237 he joined the King's council, and in 1238 was sent to Oxford to compose the quarrel between the scholars and the Romans who had accompanied the Legate. He was reprimanded by Robert, Bishop of Lincoln, for having had mass celebrated in his hall at Grantham though it was unconsecrated. He married, 1stly, Maud (m). He married, 2ndly, before 13 October 1225, Maud, widow of Hugh (BIGOD), EARL OF NORFOLK, daughter and (after the death s.p. of her 5 brothers) coheir of William (MARSHAL), 4th EARL OF PEMBROKE, by Isabel, daughter and (after her brother's death in childhood) heir of Richard (FITZGILBERT), 2nd EARL OF PEMBROKE. (i) Arundel had been excommunicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, because when the archbishop hunted in the Earl's forest in Sussex, the Earl had taken his dogs.
(m) She is alleged to have been daughter of an Earl of Arundel, to have d. 6 Feb 1215/6 and to have been buried in the chapter-house of Lewes Priory. The date 6 Feb. (no year) as the date of death of a Maud, Countess de Warenne, is confirmed by an Obit in the Beauchief Abbey Register.

EARLDOM OF PEMBROKE (VIII) 1241
WALTER (MARSHAL), EARL OF PEMBROKE, and hereditary Master Marshal, brother and heir, being 4th son of the 4th Earl, born after 1198. His father in his lifetime gave him Sturminster, in Dorset, and his father or his brother gave him Goodrich Castle, co. Hereford, and Bere, in Dorset. In 1233 he supported his brother Richard against the King's foreign favourites and his lands were forfeited. In 1234 he was in Ireland with Richard, who sent him away before the fatal battle of Kildare, lest his family should be extirpated. He passed over to Wales with his brothers and was pardoned with them. In 1239 he was alienated from the King by Henry's hostility to his brother Gilbert. In 1240 he was sent into Wales with a large army to strengthen Cardigan Castle; and he took for his brother Gilbert lands appurtenant to the honor of Carmarthen. In June 1241 he took part in the tournament at which Gilbert was mortally wounded, and he preceded the corpse on the journey to London. The King, incensed because he had forbidden the tournament, at first refused investiture; but on 27 October he relented and invested Walter with the Earldom and the office of Marshal. In 1242 Walter accompanied the King to Gascony; but he returned with Richard, Earl of Cornwall, when he quarrelled with Henry. On 30 May 1244 Maurice FitzGerald, the justiciar of Ireland, did homage to him at Westminster. In the same year Walter was one of the laymen who were elected to consider the King's dernand for a subsidy. He was a benefactor, or confirmed previous grants, to the abbeys of Tintern, Cartmel, Bindon, and Dunbrothy, and the priories of Pembroke, Goldcliff, Stanley and Kells.
He married, 6 January 1241/2, Margaret, widow of John (DE LACY)) EARL OF LINCOLN, and daughter and heir of Robert DE QUINCY, by Hawise, suo jure COUNTESS OF LINCOLN, da. of Hugh (DE KEVELIOC), EARL OF CHESTER. He died s.p., before 12 March 1244/5, at Goodrich Castle, and was buried at Tintern Abbey. Margaret surv. him, and married, 3rdly, Richard DE WILTSHIRE. EARLDOM OF PEMBROKE (V) 1219
WILLIAM (MARSHAL), EARL OF PEMBROKE, hereditary Master Marshal, 1st son and heir, born circa 1190, in Normandy. In 1205 his father gave him to King John as a hostage for his loyalty, but he was released in 1212. He joined the baronial opposition, and in February 1214/5 he was present at the meeting of the Barons at Stamford. In June he was elected one of the 25 Barons to ensure the execution of the provisions of Magna Carta, and he was excommunicated by the Pope on 11 December. On 9 April 1216 he had letters of safe conduct to go to his father; but in May he was one of the Barons who joined Louis of France and did homage to him. When Louis made Adam de Beaumont the Marshal of the army, William claimed the office as his by hereditary right and obtained it. In July he seized Worcester for Louis, but retreated when the Earl of Chester approached. In the autumn he deserted Louis and retired to Wales. In March 1216/7 he joined the Earl of Salisbury in a revolt at Rye against Louis, who was only saved by the arrival of a French fleet. William and Salisbury retreated and joined the Marshal. With Salisbury he besieged and took the castles of Winchester and Southampton, after which William besieged and captured Marlborough Castle. On 20 May 1217 he fought at Lincoln. On 21 February 1217/8 he was granted the profits from the money exchanges in 6 cities for 500 marks per annum. In May 1219 he succeeded his father in the Earldom and estates; but on 20 May 1220 he ceded the Norman lands to his brother Richard. In 1223 he sailed from Ireland with a large force to fight the Welsh, recaptured his castles, defeated Llewelyn and compelled him to come to terms. On 7 November 1223 he was appointed constable of the castles of Carmarthen and Cardigan. From 2 May 1224 to 22 June 1226 he was Justiciar of Ireland. In 1230 he accompanied the King to Brittany, and when Henry returned to England he was left to carry on the war. He founded the house of Friars Preachers at Kilkenny, and was a benefactor to the abbeys of Tintern and Mottisfont, the priory of Inistioge, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the hospital of St. Mary Rounceval; and he confirmed his father's gifts to St. Thomas of Dublin.
He married, 1stly, in 1214, Alice, daughter of Baldwin DE BETHUNE, COUNT OF AUMALE, by Hawise, daughter and probably heir of William, COUNT OF AUMALE, and widow of [I] William (DE MANDEVILLE), EARL OF ESSEX, [II] William DE FORZ, both COUNTS OF AUMALE jure uxoris (see AUMALE); which Alice died before 1221, probably circa 1216, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. He married, 2ndly, 23 April 1224, Eleanor, younger daughter of JOHN, King of England, by Isabel, daughter and heir of Aymer, COUNT OF ANGOULÊME (which Isabel married, 2ndly, Hugh DE LUSIGNAN, COUNT OF LA MARCHE). William died s.p., 6 April, and was buried 15 April 1231, in the Temple Church London. His widow took the veil but eventually married, 2ndly, Simon (DE MONTFORT), EARL OF LEICESTER. William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, who, in the time of his father, was as strenuous a supporter of the baronial cause as that nobleman was of the royal interests, and was constituted one of the twenty-five barons appointed to enforce the observance of Magna Carta, being then styled "Comes Mareschal, Jun." After the decease of King John, however, he made his peace and, becoming loyally attached to the new monarch, obtained grants of the forfeited lands of his former companions, Sayer de Quincy, Earl of Winchester, and David, Earl of Huntingdon. His lordship was subsequently engaged against the Welsh and defeated their Prince, Llewelyn, with great slaughter; and in the 14th Henry III [1230], he was captain-general of the king's forces in Brittany. He m. 1st, Alice, dau. of Baldwin de Betun, Earl of Albemarle; and 2ndly, the Lady Alianore Plantagenet, dau. of King John, and sister of Henry III, but had issue by neither. He d. in 1231, and was s. by his next brother, Richard Marshal. Charles Martel (circa 688-741), Carolingian ruler of the Frankish kingdom
of Austrasia (in present northeastern France and southwestern Germany).
Charles, whose surname means the hammer, was the son of Pepin of Herstal
and the grandfather of Charlemagne. Pepin was mayor of the palace under
the last kings of the Merovingian dynasty. When he died in 714, Charles,
an illegitimate son, was imprisoned by his father's widow, but he escaped
in 715 and was proclaimed mayor of the palace by the Austrasians. A war
between Austrasia and the Frankish kingdom of Neustria (now part of
France) followed, and at the end of it Charles became the undisputed ruler
of all the Franks. Although he was engaged in wars against the Alamanni,
Bavarians, and Saxons, his greatest achievements were against the Muslims
from Spain, who invaded France in 732. Charles defeated them near Poitiers
in a great battle in which the Muslim leader, Abd-ar-Rahman, the emir of
Spain, was killed. The progress of Islam, which had filled all Christendom
with alarm, was thus checked for a time. Charles drove the Muslims out of
the Rhone valley in 739, when they had again advanced into France as far
as Lyon, leaving them nothing of their possessions north of the Pyrenees
beyond the Aude River. Charles died in Quierzy, on the Oise River, leaving
the kingdom divided between his two sons, Carloman (circa 715-54) and
Pepin the Short.
