EDWARD OF SALISBURY, styled also Edward the Sheriff, whose parentage is unknown (b), was born ante 1060, it is said in England. He was sheriff of Wiltshire so early as February 1080/1. In 1086 he held in chief 33 manors in Wilts, as well as smaller estates in Surrey, Hants, Dorset, Somerset, Middlesex, Bucks, Oxfordshire and Herts, being styled in D.B. "Edwardus Sarisburiensis." He survived the Conqueror. He m. Unknown of whom nothing is known (e). [Complete Peerage XI:373-4, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
[b] According to the Book of Lacock, he was the son of Walter le Ewrus, Earl of Rosmar, a fictitious person, and brother of Gerold, Earl of Rosmar, born in Normandy before the Conquest (Dugdale, Mon., Vol. vi, p. 501). The nickname "le Ewrus" [=I'heureux, or the fortunate) was converted into "de Evreux" by later writers, with the result that the family has been given the name of Devereux and has been tacked on to the Norman Counts of Evreux (see the tabular pedigree given by Planché, Journal of the Brit. Arch. Ass., Vol. i, p. 39; cf. Appendix G to this volume). For the exposure of this mistake see Herald and Genealogist, Vol. iv, p. 149. "Rosmar" is an error for Roumare (Normandy), which was not a comté (cf. ante, Vol. vii, sub Lincoln); but the statement that Edward was brother of Gerold de Roumare, though apparently accepted by Nichols, Arch. Inst., Salisbury Vol., 1849, p. 213, and in the 1st edition of this work, is baseless.
(e) By her he had issue, besides his son and heir, a daughter Maud, who m. Humphrey de Bohun II, at the instance (it is said) of William II.
--------------------
Leo van de Pas, citing ES, has Leonia of Salisbury as daughter of a person named "Edward of Salisbury" by Adelize de Rames, by which Leonia inherited Rames. I assume that this is the same Edward of Salisbury, although Leonia would be a very late daughter. Cheryl Varner, World Connect db=:2753682, made the same assumption. Many of the early Norman Conquerors seemed to have children at very late times in their lives (Hugh "Lupus" d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester is another who seemed to have numerous late children). Either this was a lack of good records at this early period, or the middle aged conquerors set about establishing new English families late in life, and enjoyed their tremendous new-found wealth.

General Notes: Husband - Gideon Wright Riggs
He was born in NC in 1790 and moved with his father to Williamson co., Tenn in 1810. He was a soldier under General Jackson in the War of 1812.
GIDEON RIGGS, son of David and Miriam Wright Riggs, was born on March 8, 1790. To his children and grandchildren he was the key figure at the Cross Roads for many decades. A full account of his life is given in Chapter III.
GIDEON RIGGS, the son of David and Miriam Wright Riggs, was born in North Carolina on March 8, 1790, and removed with his father from Stokes County, formerly Surrey County, to Williamson Count, Tennessee, in 1810 or perhaps before. They were among the pioneers of Williamson County, which had just been established as a county in 1799. He was typical of the early settlers, whose activities included the construction of houses and the clearing, fencing, and cultivation of the land.
Gideon was a leader in the establishment and advancement of his community and, judging by pioneer standards, he became a man of substantial means, with estates in both Tennessee and Arkansas. His life, though colorful and eventful, was touched with sadness due to the untimely deaths of his three wives and two of his children.
It is not surprising that soon after coming to Tennessee Gideon volunteered to serve in his generation's most important endeavor - the War of 1812. A letter from the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., dated 28 May 1947 and addressed to Mrs. Quinn C. Cantrell, Brenau college, Gainesville, Georgia, states: The records show that one Gideon Riggs served in the War of 1812, as a private in Capt. Robert Cannon's Company, 2nd Regiment (Benton's) Tennessee Volunteers." His service began on December 10, 1812, and ended on April 20, 1815.
Gideon married Mary "Polly" Reynolds on March 6, 1816, as recorded in Williamson County Marriage Book 1, p. 124. She was the daughter of Richard Coleman Reynolds and Prepare Riggs. According to Mr. Wallace's Genealogy, Polly was the granddaughter of Gideon's uncle, Reuben Riggs. Mary Reynolds Riggs was born on March 10, 1798, died on December 22, 1825, and is buried at the Cross Roads Cemetery in Williamson County, Tennessee. They had two children:
Mira Marzee Riggs, b. December 19, 1816
Overton C. Riggs, b. December , 1818; d. December 30, 1835; buried at Riggs
Cross Roads.
After the death of his first wife, Mary Reynolds Riggs, he married Sophia Campbell of Campbellsville, Kentucky. Campbellsville was founded by and named for three pioneer brothers, Adam, David, and James Campbell, who came from near Greenville, Augusta Count, Virginia, according to the October 23, 1969, issue of the The News Journal, Campbellsville, Kentucky. Although this origin of the town is a firm tradition among Sophia's descendants, they do not know which of the three brothers was Sophia's father. Her tombstone in the family cemetery at Riggs Cross Roads where she is buried shows that she was born on January 22, 1801, and died on June 18, 1831.
However, the Family Bible lists her birth as January 28, 1801, and her death as June 18, 1835. It is thought the latter dates are probably correct. During their brief marriage, Sophia and Gideon had one child: Mary Campbell Riggs, b. January 22, 1830.
Following the death of Sophia, Gideon married Catherine F. Holden on March 8, 1838, in Marshall County, Tennessee. Goodspeeds History of Tennessee, 1886, page 1004, states that she was a native of Ireland. This book further states that she was born on September 1, 1815, and "at an early age immigrated to Alabama and from there to Tennessee where she married Mr. Riggs she being his third wife." After the marriage of Gideon and Catherine they lived in the brick house at the Cross Roads. They had two children:
Catherine W. Riggs, b. November 18, 1841
Gideon Wright Riggs, b. October 17, 1845 Gideon Riggs died in Williamson Co., Tenn., of pneumonia, after a grief illness of five days, in the 81st year of his age. Per Tenn paper they married abt 1-3-1829
