This page introduces you to the Stewarts of Annat who lived in Annat, Kilmadock Parish, Perthshire, Scotland. This
family was associated together in a clan-like relationship together with the
other Stewart families of Glenbuckie, Ardvorlich, and Gartnafuaran, in much the same
way as the better known Clan Stewart of Appin.
The Stewarts of Annat are the youngest of the principal families on this
site. They are more correctly described as a cadet branch of the
Stewarts of Ardvorlich, but, for ease of reading, they are
presented here as a separate family in their own
rights. Alexander Stewart, 1st Laird of Annat was a nephew to Alexander
Stewart, 1st of Ardvorlich, by Ardvorlich's brother John Stewart.
Alexander Stewart of Annat was the patriarch of the Stewarts of Annat, Ballachallan, and Craigtoun, Perthshire, Scotland. He purchased the lands of
Annat in Doune (Kilmadock) Parish in 1621 from James Muschet of Burnbank. The Annat
lands were later sold to the Stewarts of Ballachallan, also in Doune (Kilmadock) Parish, and
by the early 19th century this estate had been completely broken up among some
of the larger neighbouring estates. By 1820 the principle line of the Stewarts of Annat were no
more, although the Stewarts of Rait were styling themselves as "of Annat" at the
time.
Annat is located in Kilmadock Parish (formerly known as Doune
parish) just a few miles northwest of the
village of Doune. It is shown on modern Ordnance Survey maps as "Annet". The parish seat of Kilmadock is the village of Doune.
There is no village named Kilmadock within the parish. Kilmadock means
"cell of St. Modoc" and was an abbey and ancient centre of worship named in honour of
that Celtic saint.
The following information and map are from Doune
Historical Notes by Moray S. Mackay, (c)2003, Jamieson & Munro.

Map of Kilmadock Parish
The more orthodox etymology for the name of the farm, Annat, approved by Professor Watson, gives this as the
oldest church term in Gaelic, and says that the name means "the parent church"
or "the patron saint's church"- one dedicated to him or at whose dedication he
was present. In modern Gaelic the word is annaid. Annats, or
"patron saint's churches" are frequently found close to water. In the case
of the Annat farm of the Stewarts of Annat: locally the name Annat is that of
a burn which lies wholly within the parish of Kilmadock, flowing south by
southeast from the highest braes on the southern slopes of Uam Var (Uamh
Mhor) to it's junction with the River Teith at Old Kilmadock (the site of
the monastery), about 1-1/4 miles
from Doune. There are several waterfalls in it's course from the high wood
to the Burn of Cambus. About a third of a mile north of Milton Farm, one
of the pools is called the "Caldron Linn", (probably from coire nan linn
in Gaelic,
meaning "glen of the pool"). Annat Farm is less
than half a mile upstream from this place , on the west side of the burn.
Lower down, nearly opposite Milton, there is a steep-sided knoll, on the high
west bank of the burn, called the Kirktown Knowe, which is the site of the
ancient chapel and graveyard from which the orthodox derivation of the name
Annat is here taken. This was one of the seven local chapels which came under
the jurisdiction of the Old Kilmadock monastery. About a hundred yards
west of the Caldron Linn is the site of the ancient castle of Annat about which
little is known and the only remaining sign of which is to be seen during a hot
dry summer when the grass gets burned a little, and the plan of the walls may be
faintly traced. There is little, if any, trace of the chapel or graveyard
now apart from one or two stones on top of the knoll, but the immediate vicinity
shows broad signs of previous human activity in the strange configuration of the
ground.
Another highly plausible etymology of the name Annat suggests that the name
derives from Annait, which is the name of an ancient Goddess of Victory in the
pantheon of the Caledonian Gaels. Mackay suggests that Annat was the
location of an ancient battle between the Caledonian Gaels and perhaps an
invader from Northumbria, at which the Caledonians were victorious. In
honour of their victory they might well have named the site of the battle after
the goddess whom they believed gave them victory. Excavations in the area
give support to the theory that an ancient military camp once existed in the
area. Mackay also notes that such a battle is known to have occurred just
east of Annat where present-day Rosehall Farm is located.
Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat purchased Annat in 1621 from James Muschet
of Burnbank. According to The Stewarts of the South, the Annat family also
had a tack one fourth Glenfinglas (in the care of the Bains of Glenfinglas
branch), which lands were sublet from the family of Perth. They had a tack
of Easter and Wester Portnellan, Lochvenacherside, Callander parish, purchased by the Earl of Murray from the Perth family.
They had a tack
of the farm of Offrans and Duncragan later purchased
by Sir Patrick Murray of Auchtertyre from the Perth family. These lands
were rather prosperous.
John Stewart, 5th of Annat, sold
the estate to David Stewart of Ballachallan excepting
one farm and some feues, which became the property of Sir John McGregor.
The Ballachallan estate was later sold
to Mr Buchanan of Cambusmor - being contiguous to his
own. And the estate of Annat was bought by Lord Doune as it was lying in
the midst of his own estate, except for the farm mentioned above, which was
bought by Sir John McGregor.
Stewarts of the South
Stewarts of the South has the following to say about the family of
Annat:
Alexander Stewart of Annat sold
the estate to David Stewart of Balchallan excepting
one farm and some Feues, which are now the property of Sir John McGregor.
After the death of worthy Balchallan, which is said
to have happen by poison, the most part of his estate of Balchallan was sold
to Mr Buchanan of Cambusmor - being contiguous to his
own. And the estate of Annat was bought by Lord Down (Doune)
as it was lying in the midst of his own estate, except for
the farm mentioned above, which was bought by Sir John McGregor --
a very cheap purchase. Balchallan and Annat are in
Down (Doune) parish. Besides the estate of Annat, he had
a tack one fourth Glenfinglas, which he did sublet from
the family of Perth, [and he] had a tack of two Portnellans, Lochvenacherside, Callander parish, purchased by the late
Earl of Murray from the Perth family. He had a tack
of the farm of Offrans and Duncragan bought lately
by Sir Patrick Murray of Auchtertyre from the Perth family and had good profit of them.
It is said the first of Annat Family was
a bastard of the Ardvorlich family (although
Duncan Stewart does not mention it) and that
he purchased the estate of Annat from
Misset of Burnbank with some money
gotten by his mother from some of the Argyll family for hiding them. Whither it
was by their marriages or their own activity or through other circumstances is
uncertain, but they rose higher than any other branch of their father's race
from Ardvorlich. The last of them was a great drunkard, but was very
mindful of his two sisters to see them in Stirling for they were much supported
by Gen (General) Stewart of Boblack and by the profits of a tack they had of the farm of Offrans of the forfeited estate of Perth,
now Sir Patrick Murray's property.

John STEWART 1st of Portnellan was born in 1540 probably Portnellan,
Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, and died in 1600
(according to a privately researched Annat Tree submitted to LDS) as the youngest lawful son of
James Stewart,
4th of Baldorran,
and youngest brother of
Alexander Stewart, 1st of Ardvorlich
(although some sources show him incorrectly as a bastard of Ardvorlich).
Little is known of John except that, according to The Annat Tree, he was
a tenant in Annat, which property his son later purchased. He was father of:
-
Alexander MacIain
STEWART in Glen Finglas, 2nd of Portnellan and 1st
of Annat,
b: 1564 in probably Portnellan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander was the only known son of John Stewart, tenant in
Annat.
Alexander was the progenitor of the Stewarts of Annat, Ballachallan, and Craigtoun, Perthshire, Scotland. He purchased Annat in 1621 from James Muschet
of Burnbank. He is believed to be the Alexander McKen (MacIain) Stewart referred to
in:"Bond by James
Stewart, son of Alexander Stewart in Ardvorlich, and Alexander McKen Stewart
in Portnellan to William, Earl of Mentieth, who have become cautioners to
produce Andrew Stewart son of Alexander Stewart in Glenogle before the lords of
the Secret Council. Dated 11 June, 1622." McKen is a corruption of
"mac Iain" or "son of John". Sometime around this same date, or probably shortly
thereafter, the Annat family complained to James Beag Stewart, 2nd of
Ardvorlich, after he received a beneficial tack of Glenfinglas and portioned it
among the principal branches of the Baldorran Stewarts, because he left out the
Annat family. The dating makes it likely that it was Alexander Stewart, 1st of
Annat, who complained about being left out of the Glenfinglas tack. The Annat
family were then given a one-eighth share of Glenfinglas, which, from later
accountings, would appear to have been the property of Auchnahard in
Glenfinglas. It is not recorded who from Annat initially resided in Auchnahard,
however since The Ardvorlich History claims that the later John Buidhe Mor was preceded by "a John or two" then it seems likely that the
Auchnahard portion probably went first to John Stewart, future 2nd Laird of
Annat, while Alexander was still alive. It seems likely that John, future
2nd of Annat, likely held Auchnahard until his father's death, at which point he
would have inherited the principal estate of Annat, to become John Stewart, 2nd
of Annat, which would be when his natural son, John Buidhe Mor probably took
possession of the tack in Glenfinglas.
Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat, married in Perthshire, Scotland to
Unknown MCNAB Of Auchurn. They had the following children:
-
John STEWART 2nd of Annat b: ABT 1587 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. He died in JUN 1665. He married firstly ABT 1628 in Perthshire,
Scotland to Janet GRAHAM , Of Gartur b: ABT 1610 in Scotland. Their
children are presented below.
-
Walter STEWART b: ABT 1589 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
The Annat Tree shows no descendants for Walter.
-
Andrew STEWART in Ardkeanochdan b: ABT 1591 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Andrew entered into a contract of wadset in 1661
for the lands of Ardkeanochan.
(MacGregor). The Annat Tree shows no descendants for Andrew.
-
James STEWART, Ancestor of Drumvaich b: ABT 1593 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. He married
Margaret GRAHAM , of Boquhapple b: ABT 1620 in Boquhapple, Callander,
Perthshire, Scotland. Their They had two known sons:
-
John STEWART, ancestor of Drumvaich b: ABT 1650 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. His descendants are presented below under
1 Line - The Stewarts in
Drumvaich.
-
Charles STEWART in Milton of Cambus b: ABT 1658 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. His descendants are presented below under
3 Line -
Stewarts in Milton of Cambus, Powblack and Rait.
-
Archibald STEWART , Ancestor Of Glassingall b: ABT 1595 in Annat,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. Archibald was the
great-great-grandfather of Alexander Stewart of Glassingal. His spouse is unknown. His descendants are presented
below under
4 Line
- Stewarts in Glassingall.
John STEWART , 2nd of Annat b: ABT 1587 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. He died in JUN 1665. Stewarts of the South states that John had a natural
son named John Buidhe Mor Stewart who was given the Annat portion of
Glenfinglas, namely Auchnahard. The Ardvorlich History states that John Buidhe Mor Stewart was preceded in Glenfinglas by "a John or two", which would
suggest that this John Stewart, prior to be becoming 2nd of Annat, probably
resided at Auchnahard in Glenfinglas. Upon the death of Alexander
Stewart, 1st of Annat, then this John Stewart would have inherited Annat,
becoming John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, at which point it would appear that he
gave his natural son the property of Auchnahard in Glenfinglas.
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, must have done very well for himself as three
of his sons were themselves lairds and landowners, a fourth was a doctor, and a
fifth was Deputy Governor of Edinburgh Castle. He signed the 1654 Bond of Keltney Burn along with the heads of all the other Stewart houses in
Balquhidder, Athol, and Appin swearing tacit allegiance to King Charles II.
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat is recorded in The Annat Tree and
Stewarts of the South, Ardvorlich Section IX - "The Bains of Glenfinglas",
as having had a natural son, by an unknown woman. We don't know exactly
when this natural son was born, but the chronology of his descendants would
almost demand that he was born before his father married for the first time.
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, had the following natural son:
-
John Buidhe Mor STEWART in Glen Finglas, b: ABT 1625 in Annat,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. The Annat Tree refers to him as
"John Dow (Black) Stewart", whereas The Ardvorlich History refers to him
as "John Buidhe ("Blonde" lit. "yellow") Stewart". These nicknames
are contradictory. As his descendants were known as "Ban" (fair
haired) then Buidhe seems to be more likely to be correct. Stewarts of the South says that his father "gave him
a farm in Glenfinglas. His descendants
are now called Bains." This farm would be Auchnahard, the Annat
portion of Glenfinglas. John Buidhe Mor is described in The
Ardvorlich History as the first verifiable ancestor of the Auchnahard
family, but that he was preceded by "a John or two" -- which
appears to be a reference
to his father. John Buidhe Mor's numerous descendants are presented on the
Stewarts of Auchnahard Page.
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, married firstly in Perthshire,
Scotland to Janet GRAHAM, daughter of Jasper/Gespard Graham of Gartur.
She was b: ABT 1612 in Gartur, Cardross Moss, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. They had
the following children:
-
Alexander STEWART , 3rd of Annat b: ABT 1630 in Annat,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He died in 1695 (according to an LDS
submission). He married about ABT 1670 in Perthshire,
Scotland to Janet EDMUNSTON , Of Hermit's Croft b: ABT 1630 in Perthshire,
Scotland. Their children are presented below.
-
Duncan STEWART , 1st of Ballachallan
b: ABT 1633 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
He died in 1700 (according to an LDS submission). He signed the 1654 Bond of Keltney Burn along with the heads of all the
other Stewart houses in Balquhidder, Athol, and Appin swearing tacit
allegiance to King Charles II. He acquired the lands of Ballachallan from Walter Graham of Ballachallan in
1664. Duncan Stewart married ABT 1669 in Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland to Agnes GRAHAM , Of Bofroschlie b: ABT 1635 in Perthshire,
Scotland. Their children are presented under
Stewarts of
Ballachallan, below.
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, married secondly on 19 JUN 1649 in Perthshire,
Scotland to Elizabeth CAMPBELL, daughter of John Campbell of Craigmundroch or Kinloch b: ABT
1620 in Perthshire, Scotland. Sources disagree over her origins.
According to the John MacGregor Collection, citing Clan Campbell sources, she
was the daughter of John Campbell of Craigmundroch, whereas Duncan Stewart in
his 1739 History of the Stewarts says she was the daughter of John Campbell of
Kinloch. John MacGregor notes: "Elizabeth Campbell,
widow of John Campbell, son of John Campbell of Craigmundroch?, was the wife
of John Stewart of Annat 19th June 1649 Clan Campbell viii 312 According to
Duncan Stewart p131 she was daughter to John Campbell of Kinloch."
John Stewart and Elisabeth Campbell had the following children:
-
William STEWART , 1st
of Craigton b: ABT 8 JUN 1649 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. He purchased the lands of Craigton in the Braes of Doune.
William married ABT 1670 in Perthshire, Scotland to Katherine MACFARLANE b:
ABT 1650 in Perthshire, Scotland. Their children are presented
under Stewarts of Craigton below.
-
Charles STEWART b: ABT 27 APR 1651 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
MacGregor records that Charles had issue. Descendants shown here as
researched by Belinda Dettman:
-
Janet STEWART b: ABT 11 AUG 1677 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Charles STEWART b: ABT 15 AUG 1679 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Lt. Col.
James STEWART , Dep. Gov. Edinburgh Castle, b: ABT 1653 in Annat,
Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. James was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Scots
Regiment of Horse Guards and Deputy-Governor of the Castle of Edinburgh.
-
Capt. Henry STEWART b: ABT 1655 in Annat,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He attained the rank of Captain in the army.
-
Dr.
Robert STEWART b: ABT 1657 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
Robert was a surgeon and/or an apothecary in Doune. He was pursued by the Privy Council in 1690 for his participation in
the Jacobite army at the battle of Killiecrankie in July 1689. (MacGregor)
IGI records indicate that Robert probably married
Mary MOIR b: ABT 1685 in Scotland,
but there is no record of that marriage. They had the following child:
-
Jean or Janet STEWART b: 4 APR 1713 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Her father is recorded as having issue including a daughter Janet who
married Allan STEWART b: ABT 1710 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire,
Scotland, of the
Appin Family in Glenfinglas.
- Their descendants are presented on the
Other Stewarts in Southern Perthshire page.
-
Janet STEWART b: ABT 1660 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Jean STEWART b: ABT 1663 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
Alexander STEWART , 3rd Of Annat b: ABT 1630 in Annat,
Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. He died in 1695 (according to an LDS
submission). He married about ABT 1670 in Perthshire,
Scotland to Janet EDMUNSTON, daughter of John Edmunston of Hermit's Croft b: ABT 1630 in Perthshire,
Scotland. They had the following children:
-
Janet STEWART b: ABT 17 FEB 1672 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Isabel STEWART b: ABT 1673 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
According to the Annat Tree she married Alexander STEWART 4th of Ballachulish,
a cadet branch of the Stewarts of
Invernahyle.
-
Daughter STEWART b: ABT 1675 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. According to the Annat Tree she married James STEWART 3rd of Innischaoraich,
a cadet branch of the Stewarts of
Invernahyle. It is likely that she is identical with either Janet
above or Marjory below.
-
Marjory STEWART b: ABT 29 APR 1678 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Alexander STEWART , 4th of Annat b: ABT 1680 in Annat,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. Recorded by Duncan Stewart (1739)
as the present Lord of Annat. He was placed in the care of his paternal
uncle Duncan Stewart of Ballachallan on 14 June 1695 after the early death
of his father. Presumably he was still a minor at the time.
Alexander married Isabel FULLERTON , Of Lanrick b: ABT 1680 in Scotland.
Their children are presented below.
Alexander STEWART , 4th of Annat b: ABT 1680 in Annat,
Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Recorded by Duncan Stewart (1739) as the
present Laird of Annat. He was placed in the care of his paternal uncle
Duncan Stewart of Ballachallan on 14 June 1695 after the death of his
father. Presumably he was still a minor at the time. He was involved
in "The Glen Affair" ca. 1755 and was still alive for its appeal in 1772. Alexander
married Isabel daughter of John FULLERTON , Of Greehall, Bishop of Edinburgh, b: ABT 1680 in Scotland and had the
following children:
-
John STEWART , 5th of Annat b: ABT 1705 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Stewarts of the South describes John as "a great drunkard." He sold the
family estate of Annat to his cousin,
David Hume Stewart, 3rd of Ballachallan (below). Stewarts of the
South says that John
was "very mindful of his two sisters to see them in Stirling" where they
were pensioned by their cousin
Lt. Col. Robert Stuart of Rait (further
below). John served in the
Perthshire House of the Jacobite army in 1745. According to MacGregor, following the battle of
Culloden John fled Scotland and died without issue and his later whereabouts
are unknown. However The Annat Tree shows John with the following
children:
-
Donald STEWART, "6th" of the Annat family b: ABT 1725 in Annat,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. Donald's father sold the estate
of Annat, thus Donald inherited neither the estate nor the title, but he
was the senior surviving male heir of the Annat family. According to the
Annat Tree he was wounded at Culloden. He married an unknown woman
and had the following daughter:
-
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 1750.
-
Anne STEWART b: ABT 1728 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 1730 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Dr. Duncan STEWART, MD b: ABT 1711 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. According to MacGregor, he became a surgeon and died in
the East Indies. MacGregor and The Annat Tree both show him without
children
-
Francis STEWART b: ABT 27 FEB 1713 in Craigton, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. According to Stewarts of the South she resided with her sister
Margaret in Stirling and received income from the family tack of Offrans
and a pension from her cousin
Lt. Col. Robert Stuart of Rait
(later General Stuart).
-
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 18 FEB 1714 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. MacGregor mistakenly shows Margaret as having married
Robert STEWART ,
7th of Ardvorlich. However this contradicts the
accounts of Stewarts of the South and The Annat Tree which both
say that she resided
with her sister Francis in Stirling and received income from the family
tack of Offrans and a pension from her cousin
Lt. Col. Robert Stuart of Rait (later General Stuart) of the Drumvaich
family below. The Annat Tree shows the wife of
Ardvorlich as Margaret Stewart of the Drumvaich family below.

Duncan STEWART , 1st Of
Ballachallan b: ABT 1633 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, as a
son of John Stewart, 2nd of Annat (above).
He died in 1700 (according to an LDS submission). He acquired the lands of Ballachallan from Walter Graham of Ballachallan in
1664. Duncan Stewart married ABT 1669 in Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland to Agnes GRAHAM daughter of George Graham of Bofroschlie b: ABT 1635 in Perthshire,
Scotland. They had the following children:
-
Janet STEWART , Of Ballochallan b: ABT 9 FEB 1670 in Ballochallan,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. She married Walter GRAHAM , Of
Nether Glenny and Mondowie, b: ABT 1670 in Perthshire, Scotland. They had known
descendants who are accounted for in
Belinda Dettmann's Annat Report.
-
Agnes STEWART b: ABT 17 NOV 1670 in Ballochallan, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Agnes presumably died as a child prior to the
birth of her same-named sister, Agnes.
-
Duncan STEWART b: ABT 5 MAR 1672 in Ballochallan, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. MacGregor reports that he "died young".
-
George STEWART , 2nd Of Ballachallan b: ABT 9 OCT 1675 in
Ballochallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He married ABT 1705
in Perthshire, Scotland to Mary, daughter and Heiress
of Henry HUME , Of Argaty b: ABT 1690 in Argaty,
Perthshire, Scotland. Their children are presented below.
-
Patrick STEWART b: ABT 31 MAY 1677 in Ballochallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Patrick is not mentioned by MacGregor, therefore it is
presumed he died too young for later documentation.
-
Agnes STEWART b: ABT 5 MAY 1678 in Ballochallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Alison Mitchell's Monumental Transcriptions read: "Laedere Noli.
Lieut. Walter Stewart, wife Agnes Stewart 8.1.1756, age 80, by son John,
1760." (It is believed that the 1756 death is Agnes' and the 1760
reference is to the death of Walter.) Stewarts of the South records that John married
a daughter of Stewart of Ballachallan, but no such daughter can be found.
However Walter's wife, Agnes, is a near exact match for this Agnes,
daughter of Duncan Stewart, 1st of Ballachallan. It is therefore suggested
that Stewarts of the South was off by one generation and that it was actually Walter who
married a Stewart of Ballachallan. Thus we suggest that Agnes
Stewart married
Lt.
Walter STEWART, in Brig O' Turk. Their descendants
are presented on the
Stewarts of Glenfinglas page.
-
Elizabeth STEWART, b. ABT 1680 in
Ballachallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. She married James
Buchanan, 2nd of Auchleshie, and had issue. (MacGregor)
George STEWART , 2nd Of Ballachallan b: ABT 9 OCT 1675 in
Ballochallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He married ABT 1705
in Perthshire, Scotland to Mary daughter and heiress
of Henry HUME, of Argaty b: ABT 1690 in Argaty,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
Argaty
The name Argaty, sometimes shown as Ardgaty, derives from the
Gaelic aird, "height", and gaoth, "wind" and means "windy
height". Argaty is a farm estate located just over a mile northeast
of Doune. (See map above.) Argaty was originally part of the
Doune estate, property of the Dukes of Albany, ancestors of George
Stewart. When the House of Stewart of Albany was brought down and
executed, their lands were forfeited to the Crown and Argaty was among the
forfeited properties. After the forfeiture the Crown granted the
lands of Argaty to John Sinclair, Esquire to the King's Chamber. The
property passed to Sinclair's younger daughter who married Patrick Home
(or "Hume", pronounced "Hoom", not "Hyoom") of Polworth, and Argaty thus
came into the possession of the Home family. About a century and a
half later the property again fell upon a daughter, Mary Hume/Home, who
married George Stewart, 2nd of Ballachallan, whose descendants took the
name Home-Stewart (or Hume-Stewart). Ironically, through this
circuitous route of forfeiture and marriages the property of Argaty
actually returned to the descendants of the the same Stewarts who lost it
three centuries earlier.
George Stewart and Mary Hume had the following children:
-
Daughter STEWART b: ABT 7 JUN 1706 in Ballachallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. This daughter is listed in the OPR without a first name.
The child may have died at birth, however she is claimed by
MacFarlane family tradition to have married Donald MacFarlane of Lettir
(ca.1685-1744). No record of any such marriage exists, however
David Hume Stewart, 3rd of Ballachallan is recorded as the tutor of the
children of Donald MacFarlane as follows:
A testament by Alexander MacFarlane in Lettir, a tenant of Donald
MacFarlane of Lettir, by which at his death:
"The balance (of his estate) estimated, in value to the sum of One
Hundred and Forty Seven Pounds Scots money which was put in the hands of
David Stewart of Ballochallan as Tutor to the children of Donald
Mcfarlane of Letter who bought the said effects."
A tutor for minors is most often chosen from among the siblings of their
deceased parents. Thus it seems most likely that this unknown
Stewart and his wife died young and that David Hume Stewart, 3rd of Ballachallan, was an uncle to the children of Donald MacFarlane of Lettir.
This claim is addressed by the following reference in the
Stewarts of the South:
"3 Auchraig & Letter Do - at present Benny Munrows
property sold by the late Robert's father to a family of the name of
Stirling who sold it again to one
Mcfarlane
from whom the late David of Balchallan swindled it, although
they were his sisters children [emph. added]. It was once a grazing place to Ardvurlich
family."
This line is being researched by descendant
Andrew MacFarlane in New Zealand.
-
Francis STEWART b: 9 MAR 1713 in Ballachallan, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Francis' baptism is recorded in both Kilmadock and
Aberfoyle parishes.
-
David Hume STEWART , 3rd of Ballachallan, 6th of Annat, and of Argaty
b: ABT 1715 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland. David Hume Stewart of Ballachallan purchased the property of Annat from his cousin
John
Stewart, 5th of Annat (above). He also acquired the lands of Argaty from
his mother on 24 July 1752 and, according to the Stewarts of the South,
he tried to swindle Robert Stewart, 7th Ardvorlich, out of the property
of Ardvorlich. According to the same letter, David is described as "a
keen grasping man closely attached to the world and not much to
friendship". He died without issue.
Donald STEWART, 4th of Ballachallan, b: ABT 1710 in
Glen Finglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. David Hume Stewart
of Ballachallan is alleged in some genealogies to have had a son named
Donald Stewart, styled as 4th of Ballachallan, who fought at Culloden
and then settled at Hythie in Aberdeenshire. However this claim is
mistaken. Donald Stewart "in Ballachallan" and latterly of Hythie
did exist but he was not the son of David Hume Stewart of
Ballachallan. In fact he was roughly the same age as David Hume
Stewart and thus it would be chronologically impossible for Donald to be
the son of this David and further, David Hume Stewart is recorded as
having died without issue and his estates passed to his nephew George
Home(-Stewart), 4th of Ballachallan, 7th of Annat, and 2nd of Argaty
(shown below). Donald Stewart was actually the son of David
Stewart, Forester of Glen Finglas, who was in turn the son of James
Stewart, 4th of Ardvorlich. It is possible that Donald Stewart may
have resided at Ballachallan and thus may have been styled "in
Ballachallan" but he was never "of Ballachallan." Further
information on the correct accounting of Donald Stewart of Hythie and
"in Ballachallan" can be found on our
Stewart of Hythie page.

Dr. George HOME-STEWART,
of Argaty b: ABT 1717 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.
Dr. George Home-Steuart moved to Maryland, United States where he was
a medical doctor. Dr. George Steuart was politically involved with the
interests of the proprietorship of Maryland, i.e. the Calvert family;
thus finding himself on the "wrong" side when the Revolutionary War
erupted. He owned at least 4,100 acres in Anne Arundel County,
Maryland in 1775. The Revolution caused a dilemma for Dr. Steuart. If
he supported the Revolution, he would forfeit his property in
Scotland. If he supported the Crown, his estates in America would be
confiscated. It appears he was a pragmatic man, and divided his
family. Dr. Steuart returned to Scotland with some sons, and
proclaimed his loyalty. He left Ann and some of the family in
Maryland, signed his land over to his sons, who professing sympathy
for the Revolution, they retained the American properties. Dr. Steuart
died in Scotland, just as the Revolutionary War was ending. Ann died
in 1814, at the estate in Maryland called "Dodon." The Steuart farm at
Dodon is still family owned, though they only have about 550 acres
left. You can visit their website at

his uncle in the lands of Ballachallan and Annat. Upon George's death the
estates of Ballachallan, Annat and Argaty passed to his daughter Sophia who
married and the estates passed outside the Stewarts. George's brothers all
sued Sophia trying to claim the estates to keep them in Stewart hands, but
they were unsuccessful. George married firstly on 09 FEB 1777 in St.
Ninian's, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Mary ERSKINE of Powis b: ABT 1750 in
Powis, Angus, Scotland, daughter of David Rollo of Powis. They had no

generosity - He left three brothers the oldest of them [David] came home and
was claiming the Estate of Balchallan [against his neice, Sophia Home-Steuart]
but was rejected. Another of them was m. to a niece of the celebrated &
Gallant Gen Washington." (sic) James did not have brother who was
married to a niece of General George Washington, however his brother, Dr.
Charles Steuart of Annapolis married Elizabeth Calvert whose sister was
married to the stepson of General George Washington. This, perhaps, may be the
source of the confusion. James married on 04 NOV 1788 in Anne Arundel,

James Stewart, 4th of Ardvorlich. Mary
Stewart and Alexander Stewart had the following children:
-

Stewarts of Brackland were the most junior cadet branch of the Stewarts
of Gartnafuaran.
- Their descendants are presented under the
Stewarts

-
Helen STEWART b: ABT 28 FEB 1700 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland.

The following cadet branches are recorded in Stewarts of the South.
The next cadet branch of the Annat Stewarts is the family of James Stewart,
a merchant in Doune, and is presented in Stewarts of the South as
follows:
As far as I can understand, one Mr James Stewart, a merchant in Down (Doune) and proprietor
of some houses there, is the lineal descendant
of Annat. He has three sons in the mercantile line in Glasgow. His
father was uncle to the present Ardvorlich by the mother's side.
The Annat Tree shows that the "uncle of the present Ardvorlich on his
mother's side" would be John Stewart in Drumvaich, who's sister,
Margaret, married Robert Stewart, 7th of Ardvorlich -- parents of William
Stewart, 8th of Ardvorlich, who was the "present" Ardvorlich at the time that
Stewarts of the South was written. According to the Annat Tree,
Margaret, mother of Ardvorlich, had two brothers: Robert and an un-named brother
who "went to America". The "un-named" brother must be synonymous with
James Stewart, merchant in Doune. This branch obviously remained close to
Ardvorlich as they became maternally related to Ardvorlich again later (as shown
below).
However the resulting interval of approximately 117
years between the birth of James Stewart, Ancestor of Drumvaich and the birth of
his first grandson makes it likely that there as at least one or more generations
missing from the Annat Tree.
James STEWART , Ancestor of Drumvaich b: ABT 1593 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland, as the fourth son of Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat.
James married Margaret GRAHAM of Boquhapple (near Thornhill, not to be confused
with Bochastle). They had the
following son:
-
John or James STEWART , ancestor of Drumvaich b: ABT 1650 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. According to the Kennedy-Annat Tree John married
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 1675 in Inneschaoraich, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter
of
Alan
STEWART 2nd of Innischaoraich, a cadet branch of the Invernahyle
Stewarts.
According to the Kennedy-Annat Tree, Margaret Stewart was daughter of Allan
Stewart of Innischaoraich who was in turn son of James Stewart of
Innischaoraich. However, Stewarts of the South and the Invernahyle
genealogy in The Scottish Journal both show that Allan Stewart, 2nd of
Innischaoraich, was the son of Dugald Stewart, 1st of Innischaoraich, and the
father of James Stewart, 3rd of Innischaoraich. Furthermore, according to
The Scottish Journal, Margaret married James not John Stewart
predecessor of Drumvaich. They had the
following family:
-
James STEWART , 1st of Drumvaich b: ABT 1710 in Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Two versions of the Annat Tree
conflict over the 1st of Drumvaich being either James or John. It is
unclear whether there were two brothers who succeeded each other or whether
there is only one whose name has been incorrectly recorded in one version of
the Tree. Thus it is possible that the children shown here as being
without names in the OPR may be the same persons as two of the children
shown for John Stewart, 2nd of Drumvaich, below. James' existence is inferred from Kilmadock OPRs in which he is shown with the following children. It is presumed
that he either died without heirs or sold the estate to his brother and
emigrated. He is believed to have married Jean STUART.
- Child STEUART, bap. 1755 (no exact date given) in Drumvaich, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. (mother's first name not given)
- Child STEUART, bap. 11 NOV 1760 in Drumvaich, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland.
- Isobel STEWART?, b ABT 1712 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
Isobel is not confirmed as a daughter of this family. She had a
natural son, John, with Allan
STEWART in Doune of the Invernahyle Stewarts. The baptism was
witnessed by John Stewart, younger of Annat, suggesting that Isobel was
probably a daughter of one of the Annat families. The fact that her
son was named John suggests that her father was named John. John
Stewart, ancestor of Drumvaich is the only John of the Annat family that
would fit chronologically.
-
John STEWART , 2nd of Drumvaich b: ABT 1715 in Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. John may be one and the same person with the James shown to
be his brother (see note above). John was father of:
-
Robert STEWART , 3rd of Drumvaich b: ABT 1750 in Drumvaich, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Robert married Catharine STEWART. He presumably died prior
to 1815 as he is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and his brother
James is described as the senior surviving male of the Annat family.
-
Mary STEWART , in Drumvaich b: ABT 1775 in Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. She married
John STEWART
15th of Glenbuckie (He was Stewart of Glenbuckie by marriage and was, by birth, actually a Stewart of
Monachyle from the Glenogle family). Their descendants are
presented on the Stewarts of Glenogle Page.
-
Ruth STEWART b: ABT 1755 in Drumvaich, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
She married BET 16 AND 29 JAN 1779 in Kilmadock and Comrie, Perthshire,
Scotland to Archibald MCLAREN. After her husband's death, Ruth lived
in Milngavie and Gorbals. They had several children
including:
-
Catherine MCLAREN b: ABT 12 APR 1780 in Bridge of Teith, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 28 MAR 1812 in Gorbals,
Lanark, Scotland to
Alexander COOKE b: ABT 1780 in Scotland. They had two sons who were founders of
Kingston, Southeast Australia.
-
James MCLAREN b: ABT 18 AUG 1781 in Bridge of Teith, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. James immigrated to Australia in 1838 aboard
the ship the Brilliant. He had issue.
-
Margaret MCLAREN b: ABT 13 APR 1783 in Bridge of Teith, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. She died ABT 1795 from smallpox.
-
Alexander MCLAREN b: ABT 29 MAY 1785 in Bridge of Teith, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. He married in 1819 to Sarah CONNELL. He was
an advocate for political reform in Scotland and spent time in the Cannongate
jail for his efforts.
-
Dr. Alexander Connel MACLAREN , M.D. b: 21 DEC 1819 in Kilmarnock,
Ayrshire, Scotland, d 1902. He married in 1850 to
Mary ANDREWS. They had several children, including:
-
Sarah Lily Mary MACLAREN b: 16 FEB 1864 in London, Middlesex,
England. She married on 22 JUL 1891to
Maj. William STEWART 13th of Ardvorlich, b: 8 OCT 1859 in
Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. They had several children
who are detailed on the
Stewarts of Ardvorlich Page. Their descendants
include:
- Maj. John Alexander MacLaren STEWART, 14th of Ardvorlich
-
Alexander Donald STEWART, 15th and present of Ardvorlich
-
John MCLAREN b: ABT 7 JUL 1787 in Bridge of Teith, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland, who died in infancy from
smallpox.
-
Janet MCLAREN b: ABT 1 FEB 1790 in Bridge of Teith, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland, of whom little is known.
-
Son STEWART b: ABT 1758 in Drumvaich, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
He is described in The Annat Tree as a son of unknown
name "who went to America".
-
James STEWART , 4th of Drumvaich b: 1758 in Drumvaich, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. James is not shown in the Annat Tree and
thus he could be synonymous with the preceding unknown son, but James did
not go to America, at least not before 1815. James is described in
Stewarts of the South as "a merchant in Doune" who owned several
houses in Doune and had three sons in the mercantile in Glasgow. The
following MIs from Kilmadock have now been identified, clearly pertaining
to this branch:
39 James STEWART, merchant (at) Glasgow, died 20 JUL 1837. Catharine
STEWART 13 MAR 1876, age 81, widow of Peter ROBERTSON, farmer (at)
Craighead.
40 (next to 39) 1834. by James STEWART, merchant (in) Glasgow, in
memory of (his) father James STEWART, merchant in Doune, 28 JUL 1818, age
60, mother Helen MACFARLANE, 16 MAR 1812, age 53, brothers Douglas and
Alexander, sisters Margaret, Helen, Janet, and Agnes, youngest brother
William 12 JAN 1867.
41 (next to 40) Peter ROBERTSON and Catharine STEWART (at) Craighead,
2nd daughter Margaret, 14 APR 1833, age 7 years. Peter ROBERTSON, farmer,
died (at) Craighead 2 APR 1841, 1st son Thomas farmer (at) Craighead, died
8 AUG 1859, age 30, and his twin brother James farmer (at) Criaghead, died
5 APR 1863.
James is presumed to have married Helen MCFARLANE b: 1759 in
Perthshire, Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found.
They had the following children:
-
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 03 DEC 1780 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Margaret's baptism was witnessed by John McFarlane and
Charles Stewart both in Doune.
-
Dougal STEWART b: ABT 01 DEC 1782 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Dougal's baptism was witnessed by John McFarlane and
James Thomson both in Doune. Dougal is presumed to be one of the three
sons mentioned in Stewarts of the South as being a merchant in
Glasgow.
-
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 05 DEC 1784 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. Alexander's baptism was witnessed by Charles Stewart and
John McFarlane both in Doune. Alexander is presumed to be one of the

in Glasgow.
-

Scotland. James' baptism was witnessed by John McFarlan and David
Bain both in Doune. James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the

Janet ROBERTSON b: 14 DEC 1839 in Craighead, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
William STEWART b: 09 OCT 1797 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. William's baptism was witnessed by William Stewart and
William Young both in Doune. William is presumed not to be one of
the three sons mentioned in Stewarts of the South as being a
merchant in Glasgow, as he was likely too young at the time.
-
Agnes STEWART b: 04 APR 1800 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
Agnes' baptism was witnessed by William Stewart and William Young both
in Doune.
-
Margaret STEWART , in Drumvaich b: ABT 1720 in Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. She married
Robert STEWART, 7th of Ardvorlich. Their descendants are presented
on the Ardvorlich page.
-
Charles STEWART , in Milton of Cambus b: ABT 1658 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Charles is the progenitor of
3 Line - The Stewarts
in Milton of Cambus, Powblack and Rait, below.
Research Leads
The following MIs from Kilmadock have now been identified,
clearly pertaining to this branch:
39 James STEWART, merchant (at) Glasgow, died 20 JUL 1837.
Catharine STEWART 13 MAR 1876, age 81, widow of Peter ROBERTSON, farmer (at)
Craighead.
40 (next to 39) 1834. by James STEWART, merchant (in) Glasgow, in
memory of (his) father James STEWART, merchant in Doune, 28 JUL 1818, age 60,
mother Helen MACFARLANE, 16 MAR 1812, age 53, brothers Douglas and Alexander,
sisters Margaret, Helen, Janet, and Agnes, youngest brother William 12 JAN 1867.
41 (next to 40) Peter ROBERTSON and Catharine STEWART (at)
Craighead, 2nd daughter Margaret, 14 APR 1833, age 7 years. Peter ROBERTSON,
farmer, died (at) Craighead 2 APR 1841, 1st son Thomas farmer (at) Craighead,
died 8 AUG 1859, age 30, and his twin brother James farmer (at) Criaghead, died
5 APR 1863.

The next cadet branch of the Annat family were a family of Stewarts who
lived in Noriston near Thornhill in Port of Menteith parish. Very little
is known about this family except what is recorded in Stewarts of the South.
We have not been able to reconcile this family with parish records or discern
how this family grafts to the main Annat family tree. The Norrieston
Stewarts are presented in Stewarts of the South as follows:
Archibald Stewart in Noriston, near Thornhill.
Noriston was part of the estate of Nori, Down parish. Nori, once a great name in that
country is now almost extinct except a few
about Carron water. Noristown, a purchase of Earl of Murray.
- Archibald's son lives at
Kinross in middling circumstances. He deals
much in horses and has a family of sons.

This branch was being researched by the late
Margaret Kennedy.
The next cadet branch of the Annat Stewarts were a family who lived in
Drumvaich. Drumvaich is located in Callander parish on the bank of the
River Teith on the main road midway between Callander and Doune villages.
This branch is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
James (sic, s/b Alexander) Stewart, tacksman of Boblack
Carse of Frews, Down parish, Earl's
estate, was drowned upon the water of Teith. He left two sons:
-
Commissioner Stewart, who was
in Stirling. He left one son who sold the little
property left him by his grandfather's mother
to his uncle Gen (General) Robt Stewart of Boblack (below).
He now lives between Edinburgh and Falkirk. He has some family.
-
Gen (General) Robert Stewart of Reath,
of the Honorable East India Company, has three sons of whom you know
something yourself.
Note: Stewarts of the South is mistaken in its accounting
here. The Annat
Tree shows, and parish records confirm,
that the father of General Robert Stuart of Rait was Alexander Stewart of
Powblack in Frew, not James. Thus it is not certain whether it was
Alexander who drowned in the Teith or whether it was an unknown James Stewart
who has been confused.
Rait is located in the Carse of Gowrie, clear across the other side of Perthshire,
east of the city of Perth. Rait and Gowrie have a common etymological origin. Gowrie in
Gaelic is Gobharaidh, pronounced "Gow-rait", and may mean
"blacksmith's fortified house", the last syllable raid(h)
being synonymous with Rait.
The Stewarts in Milton of Cambus
James STEWART ancestor of Drumvaich, b. ABT 1619 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as the fourth son of Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat.

Alexander STEWART in Powblack of Frew, Ground Officer to the Earl of
Murray b: ABT 22 JUL 1700 in Cambusburn,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. d. 1757. Alexander is mentioned in the following reference in
the Appendix of Stewarts of the South in which he is mistakenly
referred to as "James Stewart in Boblack"
"I think I wrote you something concerning the Stewarts
of Tar, before, and will do again if you think proper,
though not in this paper. My reason for neglecting in
description is [for] their being extinct, [all] but two
daughters that are married and in very low circumstances.
The late James Stewart of Tar father was in partnership
with the late General Stewart of Raith's father in
purchasing Oakwoods, which trade was not at that time
taken by any but clever active men. He was called
James Stewart of Boblach in the four and twenty
farms of the Carse of Frews, in the Lordship of Doune,
and was ground officer to the Earl of Murray. And
should I have the pleasure of seeing you soon, I
shall relate some fine anecdotes that passed
between them, both of them being very active grasping men."
Alexander married ABT 1737
in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Isobel MILLER. They had the following children:
-
Alexander STEWART, bap. 19 NOV 1738 in
Powblack, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Commissioner David STUART , in Stirling b: 1741 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. He died in 1777. He married ABT 1763 to Jean
MCMILLOP. David is believed to be the person mentioned in SOS as
"Commissioner Stewart" who is recorded as an older brother to Lt. Gen.
Robert Stuart. Commissioner Stewart left one son who sold the little
property left him by his grandfather's mother to his uncle, Lt. Gen.
Robert Stuart of Rait. He was in Stirling at the time of his death (prior
to the authoring of SOS). It is believed that his surviving son was
William and that John died young.

presumed to have died young.
The Stuarts of of Annat in Rait
General Robert STUART , 1st of Annat in Rait b: 13 MAY 1744 in Powblack,
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He died 18 FEB 1820 in England.
Robert Stuart served as a commander in the army of the Honourable East
India Company and actively recruited many of his Stewart cousins into
service with the HEIC. In Stewarts of the South he is mentioned as a
Lieutenant General, but was later promoted to General.
Robert Stuart
became extremely wealthy from the East India Company and was arguably the
most financially successful of all the Baldorran Stewarts. In his later
years he provided pensions for several of his widowed and spinster
cousins, including the sisters of John Stewart, 5th and last of Annat, who
was a drunk and sold the family estate of Annat in Kilmadock.
General Robert Stuart acquired the estate of Rait in the Carse of
Gowrie in southeast Perthshire (as noted above). He named his residence
there, "Annat", after his ancestral home near Doune. As the original line
of Stewart of Annat had been sold, General Robert Stuart had the arms
re-matriculated and became 1st of Annat in Rait.
In 1817 a book of poetry by John Stewart of the Glenfinglas tribe was
published by subscription of other members of the clan. The list of
subscribers includes Lieutenant General Stewart of Rait.
Robert had the
following children by an unknown mother or mothers:
-
Agnes STEWART b: ABT 11 APR 1773 in Lendrick, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. She is suggested from parish records and is not found in
family records and is presumed to have died young.
-
Peter John STUART, b.
BEF 1781 in India. According to family
records Peter John was nearly an adult when his father was captured by the
Sikhs in 1792. He was "not so highly regarded by the General" and
was later said to be (mentally) "infirm". He probably had a
different mother from his brother Kenneth Bruce.
General Robert Stuart is believed to have married or otherwise been
involved with
Elizabeth HILLYARD by whom he is believed to have had the following
child:
-
Mary STEWART b: ABT 26 DEC 1779 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland
General Stuart married a Princess of the House of Shah Allam and
had the following two sons:
-
Kenneth Bruce STUART, 2nd of Annat in Rait, b. 1783 in India.
He died
28 JUL 1832. Kenneth and his brother Robert were sent back to Scotland as
boys to be educated. Kenneth became a celebrated linguist. He
was involved with a "high born Indian princess" who is identified in the
IGI as
Princess DE BARBAR, by whom he had the following natural child:
-
Dr.
Robert STUART, MD b: 1810 in Delhi, India. Robert was a
natural son. He was educated in Scotland as a doctor. He
returned to India and had issue in four generations, but none remain of
the Stuart name. He married
Eliza Jane Turnbull or THOMSON and had the following son:
-
Dr.
Kenneth Bruce STUART, MD b: 1836 in Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire,
Scotland. He married on 17 OCT 1860 in Edinburgh parish,
Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to
Sarah Matilda WOTHERSPOON. It is believed that the had
descendants in India.
Kenneth Bruce Stuart married firstly BET 16 AND 18 JUL 1820 in Kinnoul
and Perth, Perthshire, Scotland to Maria Janet MORRISON. They had
the following children:
-
Jessie STUART , Heiress of Annat in Rait b: 5 SEP 1821 in Annat in
Rait, Carse of Gowrie, Kinnoul, Perthshire, Scotland. She died 27 APR 1891.
She married 9 SEP 1839
in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland to the Rev. Dr. Alexander MOODY, DD,
who, upon their marriage took the hyphenate surname of MOODY-STUART
and became by marriage 3rd of Annat in Rait. He was moderator of the Free Church 1875. They had the following
family:
-
Daughter MOODY-STUART b: JUL 1840 in Edinburgh, Midlothian,
Scotland. She died at birth.
-
Rev.
Kenneth MOODY-STUART , 4th of Annat in Rait b: 13 JUN 1841 in
Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was a Free Church minister
at Moffat. He died 16 JUN 1904. Kenneth was the author of the memoirs of his father.
He married on 9 NOV 1869 in Row, Dunbarton, Scotland to Susan WALKER. It is believed they had the following
children:
-
Alexander MOODY-STUART , 5th of Annat in Rait b: 24 DEC 1870 in
Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland. It is believed that he had no male
issue and that the estate and title of Annat passed possibly to his
brother George and then ultimately to the descendants of his uncle
George Moody-Stuart.
-
George MOODY-STUART , 6th of Annat in Rait b: AFT 1870 in
Scotland. George's identity is uncertain and is inferred from
family correspondence. It is believed that he inherited the estate
and title of Annat in Rait from his brother and that he also died
without male issue and passed the estate on to the descendants of
his uncle George Moody-Stuart.
-
Kenneth MOODY-STUART b: AFT 1871 in Scotland. It is
presumed that he died prior to his elder brothers as the family
estate passed to another branch.
-
Andrew MOODY-STUART b: 26 DEC 1842 in Edinburgh, Midlothian,
Scotland. He died young in 1 SEP 1866.

-
George MOODY-STUART , CBE b: 27 OCT 1851 in Edinburgh,
Midlothian, Scotland. As a child George sat next to Robert Louis Stevenson in class at the
Edinburgh Academy (they were seated alphabetically). As an
adult, George would read bedtime stories to his grandchildren from
his "friend Louis". George was a partner in the trading firm
of Henckell DuBuisson which provided supplies to estates throughout
the West Indies. He acquired estates in Antigua which his son
Alexander went to run in the 1920s. He was made a
Commander of the British Empire for his role in founding the
Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA) in Trinidad in the
1920s. His son Alexander was the first student at ICTA. The
George Moody-Stuart school in St Kitts is named after George. He was
the father of:

the mid-20th Century. It was this Alexander against whom Sir
Vera Bird (later prime minister of Antigua) led a general strike in
1951. Sir Alexander was the first person to
propose black members to the Town Club in St Johns, Antigua, and his
family was the first white family in Antigua to have a black family
doctor (who went on to become Sir Luther Wynter). Sir
Alexander married in Antigua to Judith HENZELL.

Ogilvy of Clova. An IGI entry gives their marriage date as 5 JUN
1837, but this would be chronologically impossible and is more likely to
be Julia's birth date. They had one child:
- Julia Helen Maria Ogilvy STUART, b. 7 AUG 1857 in Edinburgh, Midlothian,

Belinda Dettman and Malcolm Gray.
The last cadet branch of the Stewarts of Annat were a family of Stewarts who
lived in Glassingall, Lendrick and the Carse of Cambus. Glassingall is
located in Dunblane parish. This family is described in
Stewarts of the South as follows.
1. Donald Stewart, son to Archibald Stewart, tacksman of Lendrick, a purchase of Sir Patrick Murray
from Perth family, Callander parish, has one son and pays
330 of rent.
2.
Hugh Stewart, uncle to the foregoing Donald
Stewart, tacksman of the Carse of Camus,
near Down (Doune) Lodge, Earl's estate. Rent 100. He
left five sons:
-
a. James, a tenant there with one son.
-
b. John, a merchant vintner and farmer in the village of Kippen, Stirlingshire.
He has four sons:
-
1-4.
One of them is a surgeon in Glasgow, and
the rest are at home - not this
one, a writer, the third is a merchant in Glasgow, and
the fourth at home. (It is uncertain what the author means by "the rest
are at home" as the third son is in Glasgow, not at home.)
-
c. Alexander Stewart, a merchant in Glasgow with one son.
-
d. Hugh Stewart, a wright in Glasgow with sons,
but I am not certain of their number.
-
e. Archibald, a wright in Stirling, with a family
of sons, but of their number I am not certain.
Lanrick or Lendrick?
There is some ambiguity as to whether this family held the property of
Lanrick or Lendrick. The two names seem to be used interchangeably in
early documents. Lendrick is located at the west end of Loch Venacher in
Callander parish. Lanrick is located just west of Doune very close to
Carse of Cambus and Annat.
The following listings in Mitchell's
Monumental Inscriptions pertain to this family, all from Kilmahog cemetery:
-
27 pelican plucking its breast, in her nest (Stewart crest).
Daniel STEWART, late farmer (at) Landrick,
died 11 MAR 1846, age 89, wife Margaret MACKINLAY, 22 OCT 1848, age 83.
-
28 emblems of
mortality.
1803. Archibald STEWART, MAY 1791, wife Mary MCFARLAND, 24 MAY 1796, by
son Daniel in ---- (illegible).
-
29 (broken) Archibald STEWART, farmer (at)
Emdrick (Lendrick) --- Sept --- died MAY 1847, ----- who died 9 JUL
1861. Elizabeth Buchanan STEWART, teacher (at) Callander, died 23 FEB
1862.
The Annat Family Tree shows the Stewarts of Glassingall descending
from Archibald Stewart, youngest son of Alexander MacIain Stewart, 1st of Annat. Stewarts of the South
accounts for this branch as being the most junior supporting the evidence of the
Annat Family Tree that this line branches from the main stem at a very
early point.
Archibald STEWART, 1st of Lanrick, Predecessor of Glasingall b: ABT 1595 in Annat,
Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as the youngest son of
Alexander MacIain STEWART, 1st of Annat. Archibald is recorded as the great-grandfather of
Alexander Stewart of Glassingal, shown below. His spouse is unknown.
It is believed that he was the father of:
- Johne Oig mac Gillespic STEWART,
2nd of Lanrick, Predecessor of Glassingall, b: ABT 1620 in
Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. His wife is unknown.
He would appear to be the John Stewart whose testament
is registered in the Dunblane Commissariat Records as: "4
Dec 1662 and 18 Dec 1662; Stewart, John Oig
M`Gillespick, in Lanrick,
par of
Callander." He is
recorded in the IGI as the father of:
-
Archibald STEWART, Predecessor of Glassingall b: ABT 3 JAN 1647 in Annat, Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. He married Helen LAW b: ABT 1650 in Perthshire,
Scotland. Archibald and Helen had the following children:
-
John STEWART b: ABT 3 NOV 1680 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
John was the predecessor of the Stewarts in Lendrick and Carse of Cambus,
immediately below.
-
Alexander STEWART , 1st of Glassingall b: ABT 17 MAY 1684 in Kilmadock,
Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander was the patriarch of the Stewarts of Glassingall, presented further below.
-
Mungo STEWART b: ABT 17 MAR 1689 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Archibald STEWART b: ABT 1695 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
According to MacGregor, Archibald was apprenticed to David Symmers, peutherer

Katherine STEWART a.k.a. "Muckle Kate Ferguson" b: 14 MAY 1798 in
Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Katharine married on 30 JAN
1835 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to
John FERGUSON b: 6 APR 1802 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
They had no known children. Katherine was known as "Muckle Kate
Ferguson". She was the innkeeper at Brig o' Turk and was reputed to
be the largest woman in Britain in the 19th century. See photo at the right.
The following article excerpted from Perthshire in History and Legend by Archie
McKerracher, (c) 1988 the Estate of Archie McKerracher, published by John
Donald Publishers, Edinburgh, pp. 111-114.:
Muckle Kate Ferguson [was known as] the fattest woman in Britain. [Note:
"Muckle" is Scots for "big".] She was born Catherine Stewart at
Landrick on Loch Venacher and grew up a slim, active girl. She married Donald Ferguson [sic, John Ferguson] and settled down as
the hostess of a local hostelry politely called 'Ferguson's Inn' at Brig o'
Turk. It was better known by its Gaelic name of Tigh Mhaide, "The
House of Sticks", perhaps from the custom of keeping a reckoning by making
notches on a stick by those who could not write.
Kate Ferguson began to put on weight as she grew older and steadily increased
in bulk until she weighed in at over 25 stone (350 pounds). Her broad
beaming face and hearty good humour made her inn a popular one, both with the
locals and the many tourists who came by coach to visit the Trossachs.
She entertained customers with lively conversation in a mixture of Gaelic and
English, seated in a large chair in the small, smoke filled room where drinks
were served. While the serving girls brought in the drams Kate took the
cash and dropped it into a large leather purse attached to her skirt which acted
as her till. Sometimes a generous gentleman might pay her more than was
due and so it came about that Kate got out of the habit of giving change at all.
This eccentricity made her all the more renowned.
In 1869 Queen Victoria made a private visit to nearby Invertrossachs House.
Although supposedly travelling informally, the Queen was accompanied by her
daughters, the Princess Louise and Beatrice, Lady Churchill, and Colonel
Ponsonby, and seventeen maids, footmen, cooks, coachmen, and the renowned John
Brown, the Queen's personal servant.
Queen Victoria had... learned of Muckle Kate Ferguson and decided the whole
party should visit her. Kate had been given warning of the visit and was
standing outside her inn dressed in her finery when the royal party arrived.
She received the queen with Highland courtesy and native dignity, and the two
enjoyed a friendly conversation.
Queen Victoria recorded the event in her diary: "We stopped at what is called
'Ferguson's Inn', but is in fact the very poorest sort of Highland cottage.
Here lives Mrs. Ferguson, an immensely fat woman, and a well known character, who
is quite nice and well dressed, but will not leave the place where she has lived
all her life selling whisky. She was brought out to see me, shaking hands
with me and patting me. She walks with a crutch and had to sit down."
The Queen presented Kate with two sovereigns which she kept to her dying day
and bequeathed to her posterity. This incident made Kate famous throughout
the land, and for years afterwards her portrait appeared in postcards in shop
windows all over Britain.
Less well known is the unfortunate misunderstanding which occurred due to
Gaelic speaking Kate's difficulty with English. It appears the Queen's
party were greatly embarrassed when Kate offered them tea and "a gill a-piece".
All of them refused the apparent offer of the demon drink and departed quickly,
leaving poor Kate wondering what she had done to offend. All she had
offered them was a "jeely piece" or jam sandwich!
Muckle Kate Ferguson died in 1872 and her body was carried in a specially
built coffin drawn by a team of horses. Hundreds followed her funeral
procession to St. Kessog's kirkyard at Callander. Kate's old inn of Tigh Mhaide at Brig o' Turk has fallen into ruin but the old house beside it
built for her retirement still stands and has been converted into a private
house of the same name. the front window still bears the marks where it
was widened to allow Kate's coffin to pass through, it being too large to leave
by the door.

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
-
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855",
then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her
exact date of birth is unknown.
-
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such
as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth
registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's
birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end
of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise
birth record.
-
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date
at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime
around 1855.
