Introduction

This page is part of the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group Web Site jointly hosted by myself, Ryk Brown, and my research partner, Chuck Speed.  The research presented on this page is not ours alone.  It is the product of all the Fellow Researchers of the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group.  We are indebted to them for their generous contributions.  This page is intended as a place for researchers to freely and cooperatively share our research with each other.  The first-time reader is advised to begin with the introduction found on the Principal Families Page before proceeding on with this page.

The Stewarts Edraleachdach and Lorrachan were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.  Please refer to the Glenbuckie page for a full introduction.

V Branch - The Lorrachan Stewarts

Edra (Edraleachdach) on the shore of Loch Katrine in Upper Strathgartney
www.multimap.com

Edraleachdach - This mid-9th century map shows the adjacent farms of Stongalvaltrie (Stron), Edraleachdach (Edra) and Letter, but there is no indication of Lorrachan.  Lorrachan is said to have been a small farm on the Edraleachdach property, but its exact location has not been identified.  It would appear that later non-Gaelic residents of this area had difficulty pronouncing the names of their farms as they were both abbreviated.

Strone, Loch Katrine
Strone - We have no photos of Edraleachdach.  This photo was taken of Strone (the farm houses on the left), viewed from the west.  Edraleachdach would be just over the rise, beyond Strone.  This photo at least gives you an idea of what the local countryside looks like.

The fifth cadet branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie (as accounted for in Stewarts of the South) was a family who lived at Edraleachdach and Lorrachan on Loch Katrine in Upper Strathgartney, Callander Parish, Perthshire, Scotland, in the heart of what today is known as The Trossachs.  The following introduction to this family is excerpted from Belinda Dettman's report on the Stewarts of Edraleachdach and Lorrachan:

When Mary Stewart was born in 1756 her parents were described in the Callander parish register as James Stewart and Margaret Stewart in Lorrachan.  James and Margaret Stewart had several other children, some born in Lorrachan, others in Edralecach.  Initially I could find no record of a place called Lorrachan, but a farm called Edra is shown on the modern ordinance map on the northern shore of Loch Katrine.  Edra is the shortened form of Edraleachdach, meaning farm between two stone-flagged burns.  Lorrachan was a separate farmtoun on the Edraleachdach estate but it is now in ruins.

The estate still belonged to the family in 1870 when James Stewart of Edraleachdach died.  Jamess will left the farm to his brother, Archibald Stewart, and Archibalds son Archibald John Stewart, conditionally upon their managing it satisfactorily for a period of five years.  I am grateful to Susan Sauve for bringing the contents of this will to my attention.

Loch Katrine, now owned by the Strathclyde Water Corporation, is the catchment for the Glasgow water supply.  The Corporation is Laird of the entire catchment area and it continued the practice of grazing sheep on the surrounding hill farms, including Edra, until about 2001.  The area has recently been incorporated into the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

The lineage of Branch Five of Glenbuckie has taken some time and effort to sort out.  Several important baptismal records are missing, possibly because the family lived at the far end of Callander parish.  As Lorrachan and Edralechach were Highland farms, situated about 20 miles west of Callander, I dont imagine that these Stewarts were regular churchgoers, and some children seem not to have been baptised, or perhaps the records have been lost. I have not been able to find baptismal records for Walter Stewart, the present Tacksman of Lorachans & Edraleek, or for his brother Alexander.  It was easy enough to find the records of Walters wife and children but not that of his birth.  As Walter fits in best as Marys brother, I have assumed that he and Alexander were the youngest surviving sons of James, the Black Serjant.

The family descends directly from Duncan Stewart, 5th Laird of Glenbucky, via his son Alexander.

As there are many holes in the early evidence of this family the following accounting is not entirely verified, but in some cases represents our best probable reconstruction based on the available evidence.  This accounting is subject to revision if new evidence surfaces.

The Origins of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach

Has Children Alexander STEWART 1st of Ardcheanochdan b: ABT 1589 in Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland as a son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie.  A challenging reading of Stewarts of the South seems to indicate that Alexander was patriarch of III Branch Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy or "Children of James son of Alexander son of Duncan"; IV Branch "Craiglevan Stewarts", a.k.a. Sliochd Dhonal mhic Alastair mhic Dhonachie, or "Children of Donald son of Alexander son of Duncan", and referred to as "Donald Stewart brother to foresaid James"; and V Branch "Lorachan Stewarts", described as descended from "James McAlistir foresaid".  Thus, these three branches descend from James and his brother Donald who were both sons of Alexander, son of Duncan.  The key question is from which Duncan do they descend?  There are two clear possibilities: 1. Duncan, 5th of Glenbuckie, in which case the son Alexander would be this Alexander and the James and Donald would be his sons; or 2. Duncan, son of Duncan, 5th of Glenbuckie, in which case the descendant branches shown here would descend from this Alexander's brother Duncan.  There is no sure way to tell which is correct.  One must ask which makes more sense, that a clan would name itself after the estate laird or after his third son?  Either is possible.  The first is preferred on the basis of pure logic.  However Stewarts of the South introduces Branch III with the following: "Duncan Stewart, brother to Iain Du Beg of Glenbuckie, had three sons."  This would seem to imply that Branches III, IV & V descend from Duncan, son of Duncan 5th of Glenbuckie as MacGregor shows.  At present, these three lines descending from Alexander, son of Duncan, 5th of Glenbuckie.  Thus we suggest that Alexander had the following sons:

  1. Has No Children "Duncan" STEWART b: ABT 1    615 in Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  There is no documentary evidence to support the existence of this Duncan. He is suggested by onomastics only. If he existed at all then it is suggested that he probably died young.
  2. Has Children James mac Alasdair mhic Donnachaidh STEWART 2nd of Ardcheanochdan b: ABT 1620 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James is tentatively accounted as 2nd of Ardcheanochdan and 1st of Edraleachdach. He went by the patronymic of "Sheumais mac Alasdair mhic Donnachaidh". James is described in Stewarts of the South as the III Branch Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy or "Children of James son of Alexander son of Duncan" and V Branch "Lorrachan Stewarts", described as descended from "James McAlistir foresaid".  James likely resided at Ardcheanochdan.  He was the father of:
    1. Has Children Alexander STEWART 3rd of Ardcheanochdan b: ABT 1645 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
      1. Alexander's information and descendants are presented on the III Branch Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy page.
    2. Has Children Donald STEWART 1st of Edraleachdach and Lorachan b: ABT 1650 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
      1. Donald's information and descendants are presented on the V Branch "Lorrachan Stewarts" page.
  3. Has Children Donald mac Alasdair STEWART, in Craiglevan, b: ABT 1625 in Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland,
    1. Donald's information and descendants are presented on the IV Branch "Craiglevan Stewarts" page.

Donald Stewart, 1st of Edraleachdach and Lorachan

This intervening family may contain errors and is presently under review.

Has Children Donald STEWART, 1st of Edralechdach and Lorachan, b: ABT 1650 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of James mac Alasdair mhic Donnachaidh Stewart, 2nd of Ardcheanochdan Stewarts of the South says: "James Mac Alastir foresaid had a son [who was] a tenant of Lorachans [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish, [on the] estate of Drummond. [James mac Alastir's] offspring goes under the denomination of Lorachans." Stewarts of the South does not give the name of this son of James mac Alasdair mhic Donnachaidh. However, The Ardvorlich History identifies a Donald Stewart "in Edralechkick" in 1680 in the Dunblane Commissariat Records. In the absence of other evidence it is suggested that these two references refer to the same person.  Donald's children are not known for sure, but are suggested by onomastics:

  1. Has Children John? STEWART , 2nd of Edraleachdach and Lorachan b: ABT 1685 in Edralechdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland He is believed to be the "John Stewart in Edraleekoch" in 1728 in the Dunblane Commissariat Records (from The Ardvorlich History).  John is suggested as the father of:

    1. Has Children Sgt. James STEWART, 3rd of Edraleachdach and Lorrachan, "The Black Sergeant", b: ABT 1725 in Edraleachdach, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
      1. James' descendants are presented below under 1 Line
    2. Has Children Robert STEWART in Gartmore b: ABT 1730 in Edraleachdach, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

      1. Robert's information and descendants are presented below under 2 Line

  2. Has Children Charles STEWART, in Edraleachdach b: ABT 1680 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

    1. Has Children Alexander STEWART , in Bochastle b: ABT 1715 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  It is not certain that this is the Alexander Stewart described in Stewarts of the South as: "Alexander Stewart, [a] tacksman of Bochastaill [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray's estate [which was] bought from Drummond of Perth. [It is] one of the prettiest farms in Perthshire. [He] left five sons." This arrangement represents our present best guess based on current evidence. Alexander's third marriage is not certain -- the children shown therein match with the description found in Stewarts of the South, but are somewhat geographically removed from the birth places of the earlier children. However, Stewarts of the South also indicates that Alexander's sons, when grown, were employed in Callander and Glasgow which would support the theory that the family was migrating east out of Upper Strathgartney.
  3. Has Children Donald? STEWART, in Edraleachdach b: ABT 1680 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  He is presumed but not confirmed to be the son of Donald.  It is suggested that John married firstly to Agnes STEWART, although no record of their marriage has been found.  And that they were parents of:

    1. Has Children Donald STEWART , in Edraleachdach b: ABT 1705 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  He may be the brother described in Stewarts of the South as: "The above Duncan had a brother [who was] a baker in Dunfermline with a family.".  Donald married Christian WRIGHT b: ABT 1705 in Perthshire, Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following known children and probably others:
      1. Has No Children John STEWART b: 6 JAN 1730 in Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
      2. Has No Children Janet STEWART b: 8 FEB 1740 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
    2. Has Children Duncan STEWART , in Cuilantogle b: ABT 1710 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  It is not confirmed that Duncan is a son of John Stewart in Edraleachdach -- this arrangement represents our best guess based on present evidence. Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Duncan Stewart, [a] late tacksman [at] Cuilanleogail [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray's estate. [He] left three sons." Duncan's wife and children as shown here are not verified.

1 Line - Sgt. James Stewart 3rd of Lorachan, "The Black Sergeant"

The first line of the Stewarts of Lorachan resided at the main family holding of Edraleachdach and Lorachan.  Stewarts of the South says that these two residences were "the same place".  That is, they were probably two different residences on the same property.  As noted above, Lorachan does not appear on any modern or historic maps.  This line is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:

James Mac Alastir foresaid (This most likely refers to James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan, 5th of Glenbuckie) [who] had a son [who was] a tenant of Lorachans [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish, [on the] estate of Drummond.  [James mac Alastir's] offspring goes under the denomination of Lorachans.

  1. James Stewart, late tacksman of [L]orachans & Edralecheg, [which are the] same place.  [James was] commonly called "the Black Serjant".  [He] left three sons:
    1. John Stewart, [the] first son [who] died before his father
    2. Walter Stewart, [who is the] present tacksman of Lorachans & Edraleek [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish [which is the] estate of Drummond.  [Lorachans and Edraleek] was a lucrative tack from the Barons of Exchequer for a long time.  [Walter had] two sons [who are both] minors.  [He pays] rent 140.
    3. Alexander Stewart, [who is] brother to Walter.  [He] is [a] land surveyor in England.  Alexander, his brother, (it is believed that the "his brother" redundantly refers to Walter's brother) left two sons:
      1. (who is not mentioned)
      2. [the] 2[nd] of them [is the] head gardener to Sir Robert Preston of Valleyfield, Perth. This a good situation.

We account for this family as follows:

Has Children Sgt. James STEWART , 3rd of Edraleachdach and Lorachan b: ABT 1720 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James is described in Stewarts of the South as: "James Stewart, late tacksman of [L]orachans & Edralecheg, [which is in the] same place. [James was] commonly called "the Black Serjant". [He] left three sons."  James married firstly on 1 SEP 1748 in Lorrachan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine STEWART b: ABT 1726 in Scotland.  Her parents are presently unknown.  They had no known children.

Sgt. James Stewart of Lorrachan married secondly on 14 MAR 1753 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret STEWART b: 31 JUL 1725 in Cuilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John and Mary Stewart in Cuilantogle (their specific origins have not been identified.  James and Margaret had the following family:

  1. Has No Children John STEWART b: 25 MAR 1754 in Lorrachan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in Stewarts of the South as: "John Stewart, [the] first son [who] died before his father."
  2. Has Children Mary STEWART b: 20 APR 1756 in Lorrachan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Mary married on 15 JAN 1774 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland to Archibald GRAHAM of Nether Glenny b: ABT 1750 in Scotland.  They had the following family:
    1. Has No Children Margaret GRAHAM b: ABT 27 NOV 1774 in Leckie, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
    2. Has No Children Christian GRAHAM b: 15 SEP 1776 in Patrickston, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
    3. Has No Children John GRAHAM b: ABT 12 JUL 1778 in Patrickston, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
    4. Has No Children Elizabeth GRAHAM b: ABT 20 OCT 1780 in Nether Patrickston, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
    5. Has No Children Mary GRAHAM b: ABT 28 FEB 1783 in Patrickston, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
    6. Has Children James GRAHAM , in Lenniston b: ABT DEC 1784 in Patrickston, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland.  James married firstly on 6 AUG 1808 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet STEWART b: 1 NOV 1788 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of James STEWART in Brackland and Katharine MCQUEEN of the Stewarts in Brackland (Stewarts of Gartnafuaran Branch VIII).  James Graham and Janet Stewart had the following family:
      1. Has No Children Archibald GRAHAM b: 11 JUN 1809 in Lenniston, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  Archibald married on 5 JUN 1829 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Janet MCINTYRE.  They had:
        1. James GRAHAM, b 17 DEC 1831 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.  He emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  He is described in more detail in Belinda Dettman's report on GRAHAM of Nether Glenny.
      2. Has No Children James GRAHAM b: 15 OCT 1812 in Lenniston, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
      3. Has No Children Catherine GRAHAM b: NOV 1813 in Lenniston, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland

James Graham married secondly on 21 MAY 1814 in Callander and Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine STEWART b: 14 APR 1785 in Callander village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John Stewart and Mary Ferguson of the "Stewarts in Soldier's Land" branch of the Stewarts of Glenogle.  James Graham and Catherine Stewart had the following family:

      1. Has No Children John GRAHAM b: 28 MAY 1815 in Lenniston, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
      2. Has No Children Duncan Robertson GRAHAM b: 27 JAN 1817 in Lenniston, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
      3. Has No Children Mary Simpson GRAHAM b: 25 NOV 1818 in Lenniston, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  Mary emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where she married in 1857 to Thomas Wellsby HATTON.
    7. Has No Children Janet GRAHAM b: ABT 11 FEB 1787 in Patrickston of Leckie, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
    8. Has No Children Jean GRAHAM b: ABT 2 MAY 1790 in Patrickston of Leckie, Gargunnock, Perthshire, Scotland
  3. Has No Children Catherine STEWART b: 5 APR 1763 in Edralechach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
  4. Has Children Walter STEWART , 4th of Edraleachdan and Lorachan, b: ABT 1765 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  No birth record has been found for Walter. He is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Walter Stewart, [who is the] present tacksman of Lorachans & Edraleek [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish [which is the] estate of Drummond. [Lorachans and Edraleek] was a lucrative tack from the Barons of Exchequer for a long time. [Walter had] two sons [who are both] minors. [He pays] rent 140." And as "Walter Stewart, present tacksman of Lorachans, keeps as hospitable a house as any tenant I know, and so did his father before." He is described in the Stewarts of the South Appendix as: "No 3[farmer in Callander] Mr Walter Stewart Tacksman of Edralecich and Lorachan of the Glenbucky family a good character 140)".

Walter Stewart in Lorachan married on 24 APR 1800 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth MCDONALD b: 5 DEC 1778 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Archibald McDonald of Monachyle  and Margaret Stewart.  Walter Stewart and Elizabeth McDonald had the following family:

    1. Has Children Margaret STEWART b: 26 JUL 1801 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  According to the will of Margaret's brother, James, Margaret resided in Callander and had a son named Walter. Margaret is believed to be found in 1861 residing at 20 Main Street (Star Hotel) in Callander, shown as born 1801 in Callander, employed as a laundress, and residing with a 17 year old son given as William. It is presumed that his name is either an enumerator's error or a transcription error as the will is to be preferred.  A caution must be noted in that the Callander OPR shows a William Stewart b 17 MAY 1844 in Callander town, son of John Stewart and Margaret MacIntyre.  However, there is no other Margaret Stewart residing in Callander in 1861 who is close to the same age, and we know that Margaret resided in Callander in 1870.  No match has been found for Margaret in Callander in the 1871 census.  Margaret had the following child:
      1. Has No Children Walter STEWART b: 1844 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  No corresponding birth record has been found in the Callander OPR.  Walter is cited in the will of his uncle James Stewart, 5th of Edraleachdach, in which he is described as "Walter Stewart...[a son to] my sister Margaret Stewart, residing in Callander" in which an allowance is to be given for his life sustenance. Walter is believed to be found in the 1861 census residing with his mother at 20 Main Street (Star Hotel) in Callander, age 17, incorrectly identified as "William Stewart" and shown with "no occupation (of weak mind)."  A caution must be noted in that the Callander OPR shows a William Stewart b 17 MAY 1844 in Callander town, son of John Stewart and Margaret MacIntyre.
    2. Has No Children Anne STEWART b: 7 APR 1803 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
    3. Has No Children James STEWART 5th of Edraleachdach and Lorachan b: 18 MAR 1805 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James was residing in 1841 at Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland and employed as a farmer with no family.

James inherited the estate of Edraleachdach and Lorachan upon the death of his father Walter. James never married nor had children. Upon his death the estate passed conditionally to his brother Archibald as noted in the will below. It is not known if Archibald met the conditions of the will and retained Edraleachdach or not. James will is given as:

Testament of James Stewart, Edraleachohach, Loch Katrine-side, Parish of Callander, d. 15 Oct 1870.
Reverend Hugh McDiarmid, Minister of the Parish of Callander, John Lorn Stewart of Stronvar, Cambelton, and Revd(?) Blair, Trossachs, and Walter Buchanan, Solicitor, Callander or survivors.as trustees of the estate were directed to:

      1. pay all just debts

      2. deposit L 1,000 and thereafter pay of the yearly interest or proceeds to my sister, Margaret Stewart, residing in Callander, during her lifetime and the other half to my niece Elizabeth Stewart daughter of my brother Archibald Stewart during her lifetime or until she attains the age of 30 years and then upon the age of thirty, 500 pounds sterling from the said one thousand poundsUpon the death of said Margaret Stewart, 500 pounds sterling from the said sum of one thousand pounds shall be paid over to or applied on behalf of her son Walter Stewart.

      3. Trustees shall allow my brother Archibald Stewart and his son Archibald John Stewart to remain upon and manage the farm of Edraleachdach with all its possessions and furnish the trustees information about the management of the farm yearly and for five years. After 5 years, should my said Trustees be satisfied with the management and behaviour of the said Archibald Stewart and Archibald John Stewart they were to convey the farm and its possessions to them. If the trustees were dissatisfied they were to convert the farm and its possessions to cash and invest the sum of fifteen hundred pounds sterling in their own names for behoof of the said Archibald John Stewart in liferent for his liferent use.

      4. To the Minister and Kirk Session of the Parish of Callander L 100

      5. To the Trustees of the Trossachs Church L 100

      6. The residue of the estate the Trustees were to retain for 10 years and then divide equally between Archibald John Stewart and Elizabeth Stewart.

Witnesses: John Smith, MD; James Gray apprentice to Said Walter Buchanan. Both Reverend Hugh McDiarmid and Andrew Blair signed to accept the offices of Trustees and Executors.

The inventory of the estate came to L 3,478-4-3. John Lorn Stewart of Stronvar, Campbelton and Walter Buchanan, Solicitor, Callander both declined to act.

Registered in the Commissary Court Books at Dunblane for the Western District of Perthshire, 25 Nov 1870, pages 92-106.

    4. Has Children Archibald STEWART, 6th and Last of Edraleachdach and Lorachan b: 11 APR 1807 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  In 1841 Archibald was living with his widowed mother at Monachyle in Balquhidder. His mother was a servant to Donald McDonald of Monachyle. In 1881 Archibald was residing at Monachyle with his cousin Duncan Stewart of Monachyle and shown as a retired farmer. Archibald is cited in the will of his brother James Stewart, 5th of Edraleachdach and Lorachan, in which Archibald is to receive the estate of Edraleachach and Lorachan with the conditions noted therein:

"Trustees shall allow my brother Archibald Stewart and his son Archibald John Stewart to remain upon and manage the farm of Edraleachdach with all its possessions and furnish the trustees information about the management of the farm yearly and for five years.

Given that Archibald was found in 1881, ten years after his brother's death, residing again at Monachyle and is shown as a "retired farmer", this would strongly suggest that he failed to meet the conditions of the will above and that the farms of Edraleachdach and Lorach were sold by the trustees and dispersed as per above.

Archibald married on 17 AND 28 APR 1845 in Port of Menteith and Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet BUCHANAN b: 30 MAY 1820 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John Buchanan and Isabella Doig.  Archibald and Janet had the following family:

      1. Has No Children Isabella STEWART b: 29 DEC 1845 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
      2. Has No Children Walter STEWART b: 8 FEB 1848 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
      3. Has No Children Archibald John STEWART b: 28 AUG 1850 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
      4. Has No Children Elizabeth STEWART b: 2 MAR 1853 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
    5. Has Children Mary STEWART b: 25 JUL 1811 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Mary is mentioned erroneously in the following reference from The Ardvorlich History (Glenfinglas Section): "Robert [Stewart], a farmer at Drunkie, who married Monachyle's sister". It was actually Mary's mother who was Monachyle's sister.  Mary married on 16 JAN 1835 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Robert STEWART, in Drunkie b: ABT 1801 in Drunkie (Invertrossachs), Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Duncan Stewart in Auchnahard of the Stewarts in Auchnahard.  They were parents of Mrs Stewart of Milton who provided an extensive genealogy.
      1. Their descendants are presented on our Stewarts in Auchnahard page.
    6. Has Children Magdalene STEWART b: 4 NOV 1814 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Magdalene married on 19 APR 1840 in Shenachyle, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland to Duncan STEWART b: ABT 1800 in Shenachyle, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Alexander STEWART , in Sheancoil
      1. Their descendants are presented at Stewarts of Glenbuckie Branch VI: Sliochd Walter nan Cliugh, Line 1.
    7. Has No Children Elisabeth STEWART b: 31 JAN 1817 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Elisabeth is not mentioned in her brother James' will and is presumed to have died young.
  5. Has No Children Alexander STEWART b: ABT 1767 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  No birth record has been found for Alexander. He is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Alexander Stewart, [who is] brother to Walter. [He] is [a] land surveyor in England. Alexander, his brother, (it is believed that the "his brother" redundantly refers to Walter's brother) left two sons."
  6. Has No Children Christian STEWART b: 28 JAN 1768 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Her baptism was recorded in Aberfoyle parish.

The second line of the Stewarts of Edraleachdach and Lorachan descend from Robert Stewart in Gartmore, brother of Sgt. James "The Black Sergeant" Stewart 3rd of Edraleachdach and Lorachan, above.  This family is described in Stewarts of the South as:

Robert Stewart, [who is] brother to [the] foresaid James (believed to refer to James, the late tacksman of [L]orachans).  [He] was [a] tacksman at Gartmore [in] Port [of] Monteith parish.  [He] had four sons:

  1. James (or George) Stewart, [a] cottager [in] Aberfoil [in the] Lordship of Monteith.  He has:
    1. two sons with their father
  2. James (or George) Stewart, [who is a] householder [in the] village of Gartmore.  [He has] three sons
    1. the first is a mason
    2. the second a gardener
    3. the third is a shoemaker
  3. Patrick Stewart [who is] a tailor in Glasgow.  [He has] four or five sons.
  4. Duncan Stewart, [who is] a labourer in Glasgow [and has] a family of sons.

We account for this family as follows:

Has Children Robert STEWART in Gartmore* b: ABT 1730 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart, [who is] brother to [the] foresaid James (believed to refer to James, the late tacksman of [L]orachans). [He] was [a] tacksman at Gartmore [in] Port [of] Monteith parish. [He] had four sons." Belinda suggests this Robert is the one shown in the Callander OPR as born illegitimately on 2 OCT 1709 in Callander, however I am sceptical of this birth.  Robert married on 24 MAR 1757 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth MCFARLANE b: 3 JUL 1727 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  They had the following family:

  1. Has No Children Agnes STEWART b: 13 FEB 1758 in Craigmuck, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland
  2. Has No Children James STEWART b: 20 JAN 1762 in Stragartna (Strathgartney), Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.  Stewarts of the South has made an error in accounting for the children of this family. Robert Stewart in Gartmore is recorded as having two sons both named James, but OPR data shows that one of these sons was actually named George. Either the author or transcriber of Stewarts of the South made an error and simply repeated the name James. Onomastics would suggest, and OPR data confirms, that the eldest son was James and the second son was George. However we cannot be confident that Stewarts of the South has recorded them in the correct order. So it is probable, but not certain, that the first of these two sons described is that of James and the second is that of George, but we cannot say for sure without further evidence. 1. James (or George) Stewart, [a] cottager [in] Aberfoil [in the] Lordship of Monteith. He has two sons with their father; 2. James (or George) Stewart, [who is a] householder [in the] village of Gartmore. [He has] three sons: the first is a mason; the second a gardener; the third is a shoemaker.
  3. Has No Children George STEWART b: 5 AUG 1764 in Letter of Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  See preceding notes on James for a description of George's family.
  4. Has No Children Duncan\David STEWART b: 12 APR 1767 in Gartmore, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Duncan Stewart, [who is] a labourer in Glasgow [and has] a family of sons." He is recorded in the Port of Menteith OPR by his substitute name of "David" Stewart.
  5. Has No Children Patrick STEWART b: ABT 1770 in Gartmore, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  Patrick is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Patrick Stewart [who is] a tailor in Glasgow. [He has] four or five sons."

*NOTE - There was another Robert Stewart in Gartmore, contemporary with this one, who also had four sons.  He was from Gartnafuaran Branch IV

3 Line - Alexander Stewart of Bochastle

Bochastle

Bochastle Farm
submitted by Val Roberts

Bochastle is the site of a Roman fort build in AD 85 and believed to have been abandoned shortly thereafter.  The ruins lay buried unknown for centuries until the River Leny flooded its banks in 1949 and exposed a portion of the ruins.

NOTE - This family is contemporary with Alexander and Elizabeth Stewart in Grodich and Auchnahard of Gartnafuaran Branch IV and they have similar sons.

Alexander Stewart, [a] tacksman of Bochastaill [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray's estate [which was] bought from Drummond of Perth.  [It is] one of the prettiest farms in Perthshire.  [He] left five sons:

  1. Charles Stewart, innkeeper in Callander - no sons
  2. Walter Stewart, a merchant in Callander - no family of sons
  3. David Stewart, a spirit dealer in Glasgow [who has] two sons [who are] doing well
  4. Peter Stewart, [a] cow-feeder in Glasgow [who has] three sons
  5. Alexander Stewart, [who is also a] cow-feeder in Glasgow [and has] one son who is an English Rider and [is] doing well.

Has Children Alexander STEWART , in Bochastle b: ABT 1715 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Alexander Stewart, [a] tacksman of Bochastaill [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray's estate [which was] bought from Drummond of Perth. [It is] one of the prettiest farms in Perthshire. [He] left five sons." Alexander's third marriage is not certain -- the children shown there match with the description found in Stewarts of the South, but are somewhat geographically removed from the birth places of the earlier children. However, Stewarts of the South also indicates that Alexander's sons, when grown, were employed in Callander and Glasgow which would support the theory that the family was migrating east out of Upper Strathgartney.

There are three marriage dates recorded for Alexander and Elisabeth/Beatrice/Beatrix Stewart: "Alexander and Elisabeth Stewarts both in this parish listed themselves to be proclaimed in order to marriage 3 DEC and were married before their third proclamation." (bet 1735-1740 Episcopal) and Alexander STEWART and Bettrice STEWART in Auchnahard, m 14 DEC 1742 or 18 MAY 1747 in Callander (both entries say "both in this parish"). Then there are two birth for Charles as shown below but with a large gap in-between. We cannot be certain that these represent the same Alexander and Beatrix or whether there may have been multiple couples with the same names. We know there was at least one other contemporary Alexander and Elisabeth Stewart in Grodich from Gartnafuaran Branch IV.

Alexander married firstly on 10 MAY 1746 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Bettrice STEWART b: ABT 1725 in Scotland of unknown parents.  They had the following family:

  1. Has No Children Charles STEWART b: 05 MAR 1740 in Edraleachdach, Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  The similarities in birth dates between this Charles and his same-named brother make it possible that there is an error in the OPR or the transcription. However, if these two births are correct then it would seem that this Charles died young prior to the birth of his same-named brother in 1748.
  2. Has No Children Charles STEWART b: 03 MAR 1748 in Edralechkoch, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Charles is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Charles Stewart, innkeeper in Callander - no sons." The Callander OPR shows no family at all for him.
  3. Has No Children James STEWART b: 04 DEC 1749 in Edrlechkoch, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
  4. Has No Children Janet STEWART b: 08 SEP 1754 in Achnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
  5. Has No Children Walter STEWART b: 05 NOV 1759 in Brae of Bochastle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Walter Stewart, a merchant in Callander - no family of sons."

Alexander married secondly on 10 FEB 1766 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian KING b: ABT 1740 in Scotland.  They had the following children:

  1. Has No Children David STEWART b: 20 DEC 1766 in Coirchromby, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  David is described in Stewarts of the South as: "David Stewart, a spirit dealer in Glasgow [who has] two sons [who are] doing well"
  2. Has No Children Duncan STEWART b: 2 FEB 1768 in Coirchromby, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young. However, the fact that Duncan and David were used as substitute names for each other may indicate that it was actually David who died young and this Duncan was the one who was a spirit dealer in Glasgow with two sons and Duncan was simply called "David" later in life.

Alexander is believed, but not confirmed, to have married thirdly to Mary MCLAUCHLAN b: ABT 1750 in Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following children:

  1. Has No Children John STEWART b: ABT 18 NOV 1771 in Doune, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland.  John is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
  2. Has No Children Bettridge STEWART b: ABT 19 SEP 1779 in Milntown of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
  3. Has No Children Janet STEWART b: ABT 3 OCT 1785 in Milntown of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
  4. Has No Children Peter STEWART b: ABT 4 MAY 1788 in Milntown of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Peter is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Peter Stewart, [a] cow-feeder in Glasgow [who has] three sons".
  5. Has No Children Alexander STEWART b: ABT 13 JUN 1790 in Miltoune of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as: "An English Rider and doing well, one son."

The present accounting of this line may contain errors and is currently under review.

Stewarts of the South accounts for this family as follows:

Duncan Stewart,  [a] late tacksman [at] Cuilanleogail [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray's estate.  [He] left three sons:

  1. Duncan, a labourer to the Earl of Murray near Doune Lodge.  [He has] four sons:
    1. One of them in the Earl's service
    2. the rest are minors
  2. Donald, [at] Summerline Flanders Moss [in] Kincardine parish.  [He has] four sons:
    1. two of them [are] soldiers who performed actions becoming the descendants of their progenitors
    2. the other two [are] with their father -
  3. John, [who is an] innkeeper [in] Doune.  [He has] three sons [who are] minors.

The above Duncan (patriarch of 4 Line, not his son) had a brother [who was] a baker in Dunfermline with a family.

No match can be found for Donald above in the 1814 Blair Drummond Census nor in the Kincardine OPR.  It seems likely that Stewarts of the South has made an error on Donald's name.

We present the following detailed accounting of this family:

Has Children Duncan STEWART , in Cuilantogle b: ABT 1710 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Duncan Stewart, [a] late tacksman [at] Cuilanleogail [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray's estate. [He] left three sons." Duncan's wife and children as shown here are not verified.  Duncan is presumed to have married Elizabeth STALKER although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following children:

  1. Has Children John STEWART b: 30 SEP 1744 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  This John is believed to be the John Stewart described in Stewarts of the South as: "John, [who is an] innkeeper [in] Doune. [He has] three sons [who are] minors."

John STEWART and Janet BUCHANAN, married 8 JAN 1773 in Callander, "both in this parish."

    1. Elizabeth 3/4/ APR 1773 in Culntogil
    2. Duncan, 1/9 APR 1775 in Culantogle
    3. Alexander 16/23 MAR 1779 in Culantogle
    4. Robert 14/14 DEC 1780 in Culntogle - twin
    5. John 14/14 DEC 1780 in Culntogle - twin
    6. Walter 12/16 FEB 1783 in Culantogle
    7. Catharine 25/26 JUL 1785 in Calliveag of Cullintogle

The Kilmadock OPR reveals only one John Stewart in this era having children and he happens to be residing in Doune and his sons match those described in Stewarts of the South.  On that basis it is suggested that he MAY be the John Stewart who married on 02 DEC 1803 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCQUEEN b: ABT 1775 in Perthshire, Scotland. (acknowledging the huge potential for error here with the fact that John would have been nearly 60 when he married.)  John Stewart and Janet McQueen are shown in parish records to have been the parents of:

    1. Has No Children James Buchanan STEWART b: 29 NOV 1804 in Auchlesshie, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland James' baptism was witnessed by John Buchanan Esq of Auchleshie and Alexander Esq Jr of Achleshie. James is described in Stewarts of the South as a minor son ca 1815. However James likely died sometime prior to 1819 when his same-named brother was born.
    2. Has No Children Murray STEWART b: 01 MAR 1807 in Auchlesshie, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Murray's baptism was witnessed by John Buchanan in Auchleskie & Alexander Buchanan Jr in Auchleshie. Murray is described in Stewarts of the South as a minor son.
    3. Has No Children Robert STEWART b: 10 JUN 1809 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as a minor son. No witnesses were given for his baptism.
    4. Has No Children Janet STEWART b: 11 AUG 1812 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
    5. Has No Children John McKerrow STEWART b: 18 SEP 1814 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  John is not listed in Stewarts of the South as he was probably born around the time of writing.
    6. Has No Children Marion STEWART b: 14 OCT 1816 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
    7. Has No Children James STEWART b: 24 MAR 1819 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
  2. Has No Children Alexander STEWART b: ABT 29 MAR 1747 in Ballachling, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South. If this family is correctly accounted for then it is presumed that Alexander died young.
  3. Has Children Duncan STEWART b: ABT 11 JUN 1749 in Ballagling (Ballagline), Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Duncan, a labourer to the Earl of Murray near Doune Lodge. [He has] four sons." There are only two Duncan Stewarts in the Kilmadock OPR in this time period. This Duncan is found residing nearby to Doune Lodge whereas the other Duncan resided in Doune and then moved to Glasgow. Thus it would seem certain that the family shown here belongs to the Duncan described in Stewarts of the SouthAcknowledging that there may be an intervening generation missing here, we suggest that he MAY be the Duncan Stewart who married on 01 AND 30 DEC 1794 in Kilmadock and Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian WALKER b: 25 FEB 1766 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John Walker and Christian McKinlay.  Duncan and Christian had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Robert STEWART b: ABT 09 AUG 1795 in Colveny, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Robert's birth is recorded as taking place in "Colveny" in Kilmadock parish. No such place has been found on modern or historic maps. The closest match is Coilentowie which is located not far from the birth places of his siblings. Robert is not identified by name in Stewarts of the South but is described as being a labourer in the service of the Earl of Murray near Doune Lodge. Robert's baptism was witnessed by Alexander Forbes at Ballocaish and Walter Stewart at (illegible, possibly his cousin Walter Stewart, merchant in Callander, son of Alexander Stewart in Bochastle).
    2. Has No Children Christian STEWART b: 18 JUL 1797 in Drummondend, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  The Kilmadock OPR records Christian's place of birth as "Drymanend." Her baptism was witnessed by John and Alexander Buchanan both at Drymanend. Christian's birth is also recorded in the Callander OPR on 15 JUL 1797 and baptized on 16 JUL 1797 with parents Duncan Stewart and Christian Walker in "Ballamactavish parish of Doune."
    3. Has No Children John STEWART b: 08 AUG 1799 in Drummond, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  John's baptism was witnessed by John and Alexander Buchanan, both in Drummond. John is described in Stewarts of the South as a minor son.
    4. Has No Children James STEWART b: ABT 15 SEP 1801 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  James' baptism is missing from our Kilmadock OPR transcription so we do not know his exact place of birth though it is likely either Drummond or Colveny. James is described in Stewarts of the South as being a minor son.
    5. Has No Children Janet STEWART b: 16 MAR 1804 in Colveny, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Janet's baptism was witnessed by Mr Murray and William Headrick both at Kilmadock.
    6. Has No Children Archibald STEWART b: 29 JAN 1807 in Colveny, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Archibald's baptism was witnessed by John Forbes at Ballacaish and Mr Murray at Kilmadock. Archibald is described in Stewarts of the South as a minor son. Archibald is found in 1861 residing at "Colvoy" in Kilmadock with his sister Christian and a 1 year old nephew Peter.
    7. Has No Children Alexander STEWART b: 08 JUN 1809 in Colveny, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander's baptism was witnessed by John and Alexander Forbes at Ballacaish. Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as a minor son.
    8. Has No Children Peter STEWART b: 23 MAY 1814 in Heads of Burn of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Peter is not listed in Stewarts of the South as he was probably close to the time of writing.
  4. Has Children Donald STEWART in Summerline b: ABT 8 JAN 1752 in Ballagling (Ballagline), Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.  The baptismal entry cited here gives no name to the son born on 8 JAN 1752, but the names of the parents are given as Duncan Stewart and Elizabeth Stalker in Ballagling. As Stewarts of the South records a son named Donald, it is presumed that this entry refers to this Donald. This Donald is believed to be the Donald Stewart described in Stewarts of the South as: "Donald, [at] Summerline Flanders Moss [in] Kincardine parish. [He has] four sons". However there is no sign of a corresponding Donald Stewart anywhere on the Moss in the 1814 Moss Census. There is one entry for a property previously held by a Donald Stewart, but there is no information given about that Donald.
    1. Donald's descendants have not been identified.

Legend

Has Children = This person has known descendants.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

  1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

  2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

  3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
