Introduction

Welcome to the Tasker family page of my family history website.  This page covers the family of Linda Winifred Tasker's father, Job Tasker.  The Tasker family were pioneer farmers in the early life of Kent County.  The Tasker paternal lineage comes from Yorkshire, England where their ancestry can be traced back to the early 1800s.

Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview of this family.  There is additional detailed information available for almost ever person presented on this page.  To avoid the unnecessary work of double-entering such things as vital statistics, the additional information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database.  Please make sure you click on the INDEX button at the bottom of the page so you don't miss out on potentially valuable additional information.

Origin of the Surname Tasker

The traditional explanation for the surname Tasker is that it is an English occupational surname for a man who did piecework.  The word "tasker" is used especially in reference to a man who threshed corn with a flail. It is derived from Anglo-Norman-French tasque and from Old French tasche which both mean "task". Tascher is the French version of the name, and Taschereau is a French diminutive form.

The Tasker Family in Leeds, Yorkshire, England

Firm evidence for the origins of our Tasker family begins with William Tasker, who was born about 1820 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  William immigrated in 1842 to southern Ontario, Canada.  He was in his early 20s and probably just recently married.  He left almost no record of his origins in England.  It is only through the account of his son that we know that William came from Leeds.

Fortunately, census records in England for the year 1841 reveal to us that, although the surname Tasker was relatively common in Yorkshire, there was only one Tasker family residing in the town of Leeds.  Assuming the Leeds origins of William are trustworthy, then we can suggest that the following family seems likely to be William's family of origin. We have no confirmation that the family shown here is indeed his correct birth family, but all the evidence so far supports the theory.

John TASKER, b. ABT 1760 in England.  No record of his birth has been found.  His date of birth is merely estimated.  There is no record of his wife's name.  He is recorded as the father of:

  1. Has No Children Daniel TASKER b: ABT 18 JAN 1784 in Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England
  2. Has Children John TASKER b: ABT 4 SEP 1785 in Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  John's birth, shown here, is very speculative. The 1785 birth represents the only John Tasker born in Leeds between 1780-1800 and he happens to have been baptized in the same parish as two of his suggested children.  John is suggested to have married to a woman named ANN, whose surname is unknown, but no record of their marriage has been found.  ANN was b: 1776 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.  The family of John and Ann Tasker represent the only family in the IGI with a son named William Tasker born in Leeds. John's other children, Thomas and Hadassah, can be found in 1841 living with their widowed mother, Ann, while elsewhere in Leeds William can be found boarding with Samuel Stead (no known connection). These two households of William and his suggested siblings comprise all the Taskers in Leeds Town in 1841. This increases our confidence that we have correctly identified William's birth family.  However these relationships are far from proven.  John and Ann Tasker are recorded as having the following family:
    1. Has Children Greenwood TASKER b: BET 1810 AND 1815 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  He is shown in 1841 living in Leeds with his widowed mother and siblings Thomas and Hadassah.  He is not found in 1851 and is suggested as the father of:
      1. Has No Children Greenwood TASKER b: 1849 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  No record of his birth has been found.  He is found living with his grandmother, Ann, in 1851.  They are also living with Hadassah Tasker.  There is no indication by which child Greenwood is a grandchild of Ann.  He is shown here as a son of Greenwood (Sr.) only for onomastic reasons, but he could just as easily be the son of Thomas or the illegitimate son of Hadassah.
    2. Has Children William TASKER b: ABT 12 APR 1817 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  He is suggested as the William Tasker who is found in 1841 in Leeds Town boarding with 15 year old Samuel Stead (no known relation to this family).  He is also suggested as the William Tasker who immigrated to East Tilbury, Kent County, Ontario, Canada in 1842 -- shown below.
    3. Has No Children Thomas TASKER b: ABT 16 JAN 1820 in Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  He is found in 1841 living with his widowed mother and sister.  He is not found in 1851.
    4. Has No Children Hadassah TASKER b: ABT 13 JUL 1823 in Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  She is found living with her widowed mother in 1841 and 1851.

The Village of Merlin, East Tilbury Township, Kent County, Ontario

East Tilbury Township, Kent County, Ontario

Tasker Road

The village of Merlin in East Tilbury Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada was home to many of our Tasker ancestors and cousins.  While the other Taskers lived in the countryside surrounding Merlin.  Just southwest of Merlin there is a Tasker Road, believed to be named after William Tasker, patriarch of this family.

Merlin is a small farming community inhabited by 750 residents located in Southwestern Ontario. It lies five kilometres due north off the shores of Lake Erie in the city of Chatham-Kent. (Wikipedia)

Merlin is most famous for being the birth place of Canadian Country singer, Michelle Wright.

The town has three main streets branching out from the main intersection. Erie Street (Merlin Town Line) runs north and south through the centre of town. William Street begins at the main intersection and travels west toward the town of Tilbury while Aberdeen Street travels east from the main intersection toward the hamlet of South Buxton.

Merlin sits on the boundary between East Tilbury and Raleigh Townships.  Merlin Village is in East Tilbury, but Merlin Cemetery, on the east of the village, is in Raleigh Township.  Merlin village is recorded at times as being in both Raleigh and East Tilbury townships.  Thus, some of the references shown below to Raleigh township, where no specific location is noted, may actually be referring to Merlin village.

William Tasker and Margaret Webster

William TASKER, born about 1817-1820 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  (According to the 1901 census his birthday was 14 APR 1820, however, according to the IGI his baptism was recorded on 12 APR 1817.)  Very little is known of his life in England except that he came from Leeds and in 1841 he was boarding with a 15 year old boy named Samuel Stead (no known relation).  William married firstly in 1848 in York Reg. Dist., Yorkshire, England to Margaret WEBSTER.  She was born in 1826 in England.  They immigrated immediately after marrying to Kent County, Ontario and settled on a farm in East Tilbury Township, near the village of Merlin.  Their first daughter Ann may have been born prior to immigration, however records conflict on her birth location.  They had 9 (or possibly 10) children and then just a few years after their last child was born Margaret died in 1871.  William married secondly BET 1871 AND 1881 in East Tilbury, Kent County, Ontario to Philadelphia BUTCHER who was born 30 SEP 1842 in East Farleigh, Kent, England.  William and Philadelphia are said to have met on a ship crossing from England to Canada, while William was back visiting.  They are said to have married only three weeks after meeting, however no record of their marriage has been found.  William had the following children all by his first wife:

  1. Has No Children Ann TASKER b: 1843 in England (although no record of her birth has been found).  She married on 3 APR 1867 in Leamington, Essex County, Ontario, Canada to William HARDY b: 1843 in England.  They had no known children and it is suspected she died shortly after their marriage as William is shown with his second wife in 1881.  (A possible birth for Ann has been found on 30 JUL 1843 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, just south of Leeds, as the daughter of William and Hannah Tasker.  If so, then this would suggest that Ann came from a previously unknown first marriage for William prior to his marriage to Margaret Webster.  Ann is the only child found for this couple.  The five year gap between her birth and that of Isabella would further suggest that Ann came from a prior marriage.)
Evidence has now been found to show that Ann Tasker was born from William's first marriage and that she married secondly after the death of William Hardy.  see:

  2. Has Children Isabella TASKER b: 23 JUN 1849 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario.  She married on 6 MAR 1871 in Merlin, Kent County, Ontario to James W. BADDER b: 1842 in Ontario.  James W Badder, was married previously to Harriet Lott. They had 4 children before Harriet died 16 Feb 1870. So, Isabella inherited an 'instant' family. The children were all young: Eliza Jane, b. 24 Dec 1862; Margaret A, b. 5 May 1864; Solomon James, b. 20 June 1866; Elizabeth Ida, b. 1 Apr 1868.  James and Isabella had two of their own children, about which time Isabella died.  Her cause of death is unknown, but it is possible that she may have died in childbirth.  James Badder then married thirdly.  Isobel and James had the following children.  (In formation on descendants of this branch is c/o Rebecca Jones.)
    1. Has Children Jonathan Joseph BADDER b: 17 AUG 1872 in Merlin, Kent County, Ontario.  Jonathan married firstly ABT 1888 to Sarah HUNT b: 16 MAY 1870 in England.  It appears to be correct that Jonathan was only 16 and his wife, 18, when they had their first child. In 1910 Jonathan was in Cheboygan Co, MI. (Cheboygan County, Michigan; Forest Twp; ED 17; pg 286B).  His future second wife, Emma, was listed as "Housekeeper" Divorced, with daughter Doris Stephenson.  By 1920, they were in Presque Isle Co, MI (Presque Isle County, Michigan; City of Onaway; ED 321; pg 214A). They were married now, with 3 more children: Gertrude [abt 1912]; Joseph (Jonathan Joseph) [28 Sep 1915 - 8 Sep 2002]; and La Verna [abt 1919]. SSDI - Name: Jonathan J. Badder SSN: 711-01-8022 Last Residence: 48506 Flint, Genesee, Michigan, United States of America Born: 28 Sep 1915 Died: 8 Sep 2002 State (Year) SSN issued: Railroad Board (Issued Through) (Before 1951 ) Jonathan Joseph, Sr died 1 Jul 1922.  The 1930 Shiawassee Co, MI census shows Emma in the home of Edward Bayliss as servant (housekeeper was crossed out), but her occupation is listed as "housekeeper" for a 'private family'. J Joseph, Jr and 'Ferna' are 14 and 10, respectively. They are enumerated as nephew and niece. (1930 Shiawassee, Vernon Twp, ED 33, pg 75B).  Joseph and his first wife Sarah Hunt had the following children:
      1. Has No Children Charlie BADDER b: 17 MAR 1888 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario
      2. Has No Children Virgel BADDER b: 25 JUL 1895 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario
      3. Has No Children Stella BADDER b: 2 APR 1897 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario
      4. Has No Children Mabel BADDER b: 18 FEB 1898 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario
      5. Has No Children Russel BADDER b: 19 FEB 1900 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario

Jonathan Joseph Badder married secondly BET 1910 AND 1920 in Michigan, USA to Emma J. STEPHENSON (her previous married name; her maiden name is unknown), by whom he had the following children:

      1. Has No Children Gertrude BADDER b: Private
      2. Has No Children Jonathan Joseph BADDER b: 28 SEP 1915 in Michigan, USA
      3. Has No Children Laverna BADDER b: ABT 1919 in Michigan, USA
    2. Has No Children Christopher William BADDER b: 5 MAY 1875 in Merlin, Kent County, Ontario.  Christopher W and wife Mina were in Cheboygan Co in 1910 as well (Cheboygan County, Michigan; Forest Twp; ED 17; pg 285B-286A), but by 1920, Christopher was widowed and living as a 'border' in Wayne Co, Mi in the home of Georgina Smith, widowed (Detroit City, 12 precinct, ward 15, ED 467, pg 255B). In 1930, still in Wayne Co, Christopher is again married, now to Velma A [nee unknown]. (Detroit City, ward 15, 15 precinct, Block # 287, ED 461, pg 256B-257A).  It is believed that Christopher had no children.
  3. Has Children Peter TASKER b: 8 JUL 1851 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario.  He married on 11 JUL 1871 in Bothwell, Kent County, Ontario, Canada to Charlotte "Lottie" DENT b: 10 JUL 1852 in Komoka, Ontario, Canada.  They had the following children:

      1. Has Children Charles William James TASKER b: 3 SEP 1902 in Tibury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  He married Vida AVERY b: UNKNOWN in Thamesville, Ontario, Canada, although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following child and possibly others:

  4. Has No Children James TASKER b: 4 APR 1853 in Tilbury East, Kent, Ontario.  James is found residing with his birth family in Tilbury in 1861 and 1871. His name is mistakenly transcribed in some later records as "Jos." instead of "Jas." James moved to North Dakota and married a woman named Abigail.
  5. Has Children John William TASKER b: 8 JUL 1855 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  He married firstly to Louisa Ellen HUNT b: ABT 1861 in England, although no record of their marriage has been found.  (Her name is miss-transcribed in the IGI and Ancestry as "Susie".)  They had the following children:
    1. Has Children John William George TASKER b: 16 JAN 1881 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  He went by "George".  George moved as a young man with his father to North Dakota sometime before 1907.  George married presumably in North Dakota to Nellie B. b: 1885 in North Dakota, USA, although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following children:

    2. Has No Children Margaret Alice TASKER b: 14 FEB 1883 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  She is not found in any later records and may have died young.

Louise Hunt is presumed to have died about 1883, probably in childbirth, as John William Tasker married secondly to Alice HUNT although no record has been found of their marriage.  She is presumed to be a different person than the Alice Hunt who married Thomas Tasker below.  John and Alice had the following child:

    1. Has No Children Ethel May TASKER b: 26 NOV 1884 in East Tilbury, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  She is not found in any later records and may have died young.

Alice is presumed to have died prematurely as well as we next find John in 1910 as a widower living with his son in North Dakota where he lived out the remainder of his life.  John and his family have not been found in the American census for 1900 or the Canadian census for 1901, so their whereabouts between 1884 and 1910 is unknown.

  7. Has No Children Mary Catherine TASKER b: 17 FEB 1860 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  She married on 7 JUL 1887 in Barrytown, Raleigh Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada to William Michael MCCARTHY b: 1859 in Killarney, Ireland.  They are not found in later census records, however, Mary Catherine is buried in Baddertown Cemetery with her brother, Thomas Tasker.
  8. Has Children Thomas Loras TASKER b: 2 FEB 1862 in Glenwood, Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario.  He married firstly before 1884 to Alice HUNT b: ABT 1865.  She is presumed to be a different Alice Hunt than the one who married John William Tasker above.  Thomas and Alice had the following daughter:
    1. Has Children Isabella Maude TASKER b: 19 SEP 1884 in East Tilbury Township, Kent County, Ontario.  She married on 27 SEP 1904 in Raleigh Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada to Jeremiah W. HASKELL b: 1876 in Raleigh Township, Kent County, Ontario.  They had the following children:

However he has not been found in the 1911 census for Canada or any American census records, so his outlaw career may have been rather short lived. He apparently died without marrying and without children.
    4. Has Children James Nelson TASKER b: 16 JUL 1893 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario.  He married on 6 JAN 1920 in Merlin, Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada to Dolly JOYCE b: 1902 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario, Canada, and had the following child:

Job Tasker and Frances Bell

Job Tasker, as shown above, was born 3 JAN 1857 in Tilbury East, Kent County, Ontario.  He married late at age 48 to Frances Bell, a woman nearly 25 years his junior. Frances Bell came from a farming family in Northumberland, England, not far from Hexham Abbey where her ancestry can be traced back as far as the 17th century. Her family's story is told on the Bell Family Page.

Job and Frances settled on a farm near the village of Merlin in Tilbury Township, Kent County where they had five children in seven years - a feat that seems almost biologically impossible! At the very least it must have been incredibly overwhelming.  They found they could not handle all five children so their daughter Win was partly given away to be raised by her aunt Jean Bell and uncle Frank Dalgliesh. Job and Frances Tasker had the following children:

  1. Has Children Lawrence Randolph TASKER b: 5 JAN 1906 in Merlin, Kent County, Ontario.  "Dolph" was an excellent violinist and an excellent auto mechanic. Legend

Has Children = This person has known descendants.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

  1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

  2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

  3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
