FORMERLY AT BOULOGNE

A CHAT WITH NEWTON ST. LOE'S NEW RECTOR

The Rev. William Beaumont RUSSELL, the new Rector of Newton St. Loe, was formerly at Boulogne. He came to Newton three weeks ago, succeeding the Rev. A. D. M. BIDLAKE, who has retired.

From 1920 until 1932, Mr. RUSSELL was British resident chaplain in Boulogne and district. He was there when the terrible disaster of the R 101 occurred not far from Boulogne.

Mr. RUSSELL, writes a representative of this paper, in a chat with me on Wednesday, told me of the free and easy but hard-working life they lived in Boulogne. He and his wife, during the entire period they lived in Boulogne, were never without a guest for dinner. Mr. RUSSELL ran an institute for seamen there, and its popularity was very great. The sailors, once they knew of the institute, made a bee-line for it as soon as they reached port.

Mr. RUSSELL, who received his theological training at Cambridge became a deacon in 1914, and a priest two years later. From 1914 to 1918 he was curate at St. James's, Tunbridge Wells. During the last two years of the war he was Temporary Chaplain to the Forces, and from 1918-1919 organising secretary for the Religious Tract Society.

From 1927-29 he was rector of Allington, Kent, and afterwards went to his post at Boulogne. On his return to England, in 1932, he became vicar of Ile Brewers, near Taunton.

Mr. RUSSELL is keenly interested in campanology.
