HOME GUARD'S DEATH
FUNERAL OF MR. A. G. REED TAUNTON
The death took place at his home, 8, Trinity-street, Taunton, on Saturday, of Mr. Arthur George REED, aged 40. He had been ill only a short time with influenza. He leaves a wife and two young children.
Mr. REED had been a member of No. 5 Platoon of Taunton Home Guard. The Officer Commanding in a letter of sympathy to his wife, wrote:- “It needed only a very short association with him to realise his sterling worth. His conscientiousness and unselfish spirit were an inspiration to all around him. He will be grievously missed.”
For seven years Mr. REED had been employed by Taunton branch of the West Somerset Dairy and Bacon Company and was popular.
The funeral took place on Wednesday with Home Guard as bearers. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. George's Roman Catholic Church (where the coffin had rested over night) by the Rev. J. McMANUS, assistant-priest, who also conducted the service at St. James' Cemetery.
The family mourners were:- Mrs. REED (wife), Master Peter REED (son), Mr. C. PAUL (uncle), Mrs. C. WISE and Mrs. M. PRIEST (sisters-in-law), Messrs. W. and G. GUY, and Mr. P. WISE (brothers-in-law).
Lieut. EDMUNDS represented the O.C. No. 5 Platoon Home Guard, Lieut. F. S. STOTT, and the bearers were:- Platoon Sergt. POOK, Sergt. MINGO, Lance-Corpls. W. WILLIAMS and DIMOND, Ptes. SAUNDERS and FAWLE. The West Somerset Dairy Company and deceased's fellow employees were also represented.
Among the wreaths was one from No. 5 Platoon.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. E. E. WHITE & Son (Taunton), Ltd., of East Reach.
