SOMERTON.

SCHOOL BOARD, Feb. 7th. - Present: Messrs. F. W. PINNEY (in the chair), E. W. VALENTINE, William HILBORNE, and J. C. CROCKER. - The Clerk (Mr. J. S. TAYLOR) produced a letter from Mr. LOUCH in reference to the election charges. He withdrew the charge of £1 15s for counting votes, and asked for a cheque for £21 15s 11d. - The matter was allowed to stand over until the receipt of the Government grant. - The Chairman and Mr. WYATT were appointed visitors for the ensuing month.

DEATH OF AN OCTOGENARIAN. - On Thursday, the 31st ult., the death took place of Miss Mary COZENS, aged 83, one of the oldest inhabitants of the town, and a member of an old Somerton family. Deceased was buried at the Cemetery on Wednesday, the funeral service being conducted by the Vicar of the parish, the Rev. Mr. STRONG. The chief mourners were Mrs. PARKHOUSE (sister of the deceased), Mr. J. S. C. PARKHOUSE (nephew), and Mr. Thomas COZENS (brother).

THEFT OF FOWLS. - CONSTABLES COMPLIMENTED. - At the Police-court on Feb. 7th, before Messrs. F. W. PINNEY and E. W. VALENTINE, Edward EDNEY, a carpenter, and George MARTIN, a labourer, both of West Lydford, were brought up in custody charged with stealing nine fowls, the property of Miss Ada JAMES, of High-street Farm, on the night of the 5th inst. - Evidence was given by P.C. WHITEHEAD, of Keinton Mandeville, and P.C. SLOCOMBE, of Somerton, and the defendants, who admitted the theft, were each committed for two months with hard labour. - The magistrates complimented the constables upon the tact they had displayed in the discovery of the stolen property and the thieves, and expressed a hope that Supt. PERRY would bring their conduct to the notice of the proper authorities. - Superintendent PERRY said he should be pleased to carry out the wishes of the Bench.
