DEAD AT THE ROADSIDE.

A SPLASH IN THE NIGHT.

INQUEST AT WRANTAGE.

To be found dead in a ditch containing three feet of water at the side of the road near his home was the fate of Walter TANNER (67), of Wrantage, North Curry.

The discovery was made at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, when Edward Vincent SPILLER, blacksmith, heard a splash as he was going along the road. He had just passed deceased, and wished him “Good-night,” though he received no answer. TANNER was then going towards North Curry, having come from the Canal Inn, where he had consumed a pint of cider.

SPILLER, when near the inn, heard a splash, and noticing the sound of steps had ceased, he ran into the inn, calling for help. When he returned to the road he saw, by the aid of the light of a match, something dark under the water. Jumping in, he found it to be the body of a man, which, with assistance, he lifted out for artificial respiration to be applied. A doctor was sent for, but when Dr. SATCHWELL, of North Curry, arrived he could only pronounce life extinct.

At the inquest a verdict of “Accidental death from drowning” was returned.
