CHURCH FETE.

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT CHEDDON FITZPAINE.

EFFORT FOR CHURCH FUNDS.

With the object of raising £100 for church funds, a fete was held in the grounds of Cheddon Fitzpaine Rectory on Thursday afternoon. The event was favoured with fine weather, and the shaded lawns of the Rectory provided an ideal setting.

The fete was organised by a Committee, of which the Rector (the Rev. C. GRAHAM) was chairman, and Miss BRUFORD, of “The Nerrols,” hon. secretary.

The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs. INGLES, wife of Dr. C. W. C. INGLES, of Sweethay Court, Trull, who until about two years ago was Rector of Cheddon Fitzpaine. The Vicar presided, supported by Dr. and Mrs. INGLES, Colonel and Mrs. C. D. G. LYON, Mr. Robert BRUFORD, and others.

The Rector extended a cordial welcome to Mrs. INGLES and explained that one of the objects of the fete was to get the people of the parish together. He referred to the restoration of the church tower and bells, work which had been carried out recently, the cost of £500 being defrayed by Colonel PEMBERTON, who was unable to be present that afternoon. He had also decided to repair the Parish Cross, the plans for which were well in hand. They also required £8 for the purchase of new bell ropes; the woodwork at the bottom of the tower was being replaced. They had an architect's estimate of £300 for the east end of the church, which also needed cleaning badly. It had been suggested that they should equip the church with “kneelers,” and he was asking them to raise £100, and that morning in anticipation of doing that he had placed £100 at the bank in the church accounts. He had already over £32 in hand.

In declaring the fete open, Mrs. INGLES expressed her pleasure at being present. They all regretted the absence, through illness, of Mrs. GRAHAM, and hoped she would make a speedy recovery to normal health.

A cordial vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. INGLES, on the proposition of Colonel C. D. G. LYON.

CHILDREN'S PLAY.

An interesting feature of the fete was a children's play, entitled “Princess Royal.” This entertainment, which was a play with dances, was very prettily executed by the scholars of Cheddon Fitzpaine Church Sunday School, and was very much enjoyed, both by young and old. Mr. SAMSON and Miss BRUFORD were responsible for its production, and the success which attended it was a just reward for the amount of hard work and inexhaustible patience which it entailed.

The performers were:- Margaret ROY, May CAPHAM, Eve GRAHAM, Clarice BRADBURY, Christine BRADBURY, Margaret BRADBURY, Margaret THOMAS, Dennis COCKRAM, Barbara RAWCLIFFE, Gladys CAPHAM and Mildred AISH.

Betty COCKRAM presided at the piano.

Throughout the afternoon music was provided by Mr. J. D. LYNE's radio amplifier, which also provided the music for dancing in the evening.

STALLS and CONVENERS.

The admirable tea arrangements were in the capable hands of Mesdames HERRING and HICKLEY and the Misses GRAHAM, assisted by many other willing helpers. Mrs. GANGE and Mrs. K. NORMAN were the conveners of the produce stall, while Mrs. PLEASS, Mrs. MUSGRAVE and Mrs. HOLMAN were in charge of a stall arranged by the Working Party. The china and glass stall was under the supervision of the Hon. Mrs. PORTMAN, assisted by Mrs. LYLE. Mrs. HICKLEY and Miss BRUFORD were in charge of the sweet stall.

Besides the usual stalls, there were a large number of side-shows, including quoits, bean-bags, fishing, table skittles and many others. Skittling competitions were in progress throughout the previous week. These side-shows, which were well patronised, were arranged by Mr. MUSGRAVE and Captain HERRING.

Throughout the afternoon “buttonholes” were sold by May COPHAM, Betty COCKRAM, and Mildred AISH.

A “table-cloth” competition, arranged by the scholars of the Cheddon Fitzpaine School, realised £2 2s 6d, and was won by Mrs. SUMPTION. The doll competition was won by Mrs. EVANS, Mr. Chris. COLLINS won the prize for men's skittles, and Miss GANGE the prize for ladies.
