WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY:
In reading a 1798 Quaker minute book it became apparent that a Jacob Cronk and a Jacob Cronkhite were two different men. They may be first cousins. In trying to find out more, I discovered many other Cronks in early Upper Canada. This page will focus on the Cronk, Cronkhite families of Sophiasburgh, Hallowell and the surrounding area. This is a work in progress and new information is welcome.

OVERVIEW
There are many petitions and free land grants for the Cronk settlers in the 1790's and later. An attempt has been made to match the petitions to the actual land grant using the OLRI and finding the fiats and warrants that follow a successful grant. Abraham Cronk and his sons are well represented and can be matched into a NY family. The puzzle is to find any interconnections between the other groups of settlers.

An excellent source on the Cronk family beginning in New Amsterdam and then up the Hudson Valley is The Settlers of Beekman Patent, 1995, Vol 3, by Frank J Doherty, chapter 66. One section of the family (Teunis Cronkhite) is presented below that names individuals who came to Upper Canada. Hopefully more connections will be made.

LOYALIST RECORDS
Loyalist Muster Roll  20 Dec 1777
Jacob CRONK  - prisoner with the Rebels.
This is a roll following the fortunes (or more likely misfortunes) of the Loyalists under Pfister who along with German Regulars met disaster at the Battle of Bennington in Aug 1777.  The Muster Roll was researched and posted by Bernard C. YOUNG  and you can see it by googling "Rensselaer County Loyalist Soldiers".   It also lists others who aren't prisoners, and some who were killed.

Some other names I spot are Hercules CRONKHITE (in Cantonment), Frederick CRONKHITE (same), John CRONKHITE (same) William CRONKHITE (same) Sgt Frederick CRONKHITE (prisoner), Aurent CRONKHITE (prisoner), Francis CRONKHITE (prisoner), Sybrant CRONKHITE (killed), Jacob CRONKHITE (killed).  Angela has a couple of ancestors in the list - Eberhardt WAGER and Henry YOUNG.

2. Abraham Cronk Senior (1741 - ?) and Wyntje [Lavina] Hoff and their children

OVERVIEW
Abraham Cronk Sr is said to be a Loyalist in PLBQ. However none of his petitions make that claim nor do his children claim as "children of a loyalist" nor were they granted lands as SUE or DUE. Peter Johnson, past President of the UE Assoc of Canada emailed me that he "couldn't find any mention of him - checked two of the usual secondary sources, and the Executive Council List which is fairly definitive."

The chart shows the great match between the NY baptism records from Doherty and the Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte.
There can be no doubt that the NY family has been identified.

It is probable that Abraham had a late second marriage in 1796 to the widow of Lt Israel Ferguson. Secondary sources record that her maiden name was Nancy Singleton. See the bottom of the Overview section on this McArthur web page on this site for more details.

CANNIFF ON SETTLING SOPHIASBURGH
All, or nearly all, who took up land here [Sophiasburgh] and became the pioneers, had at first lived in one of the townships upon the lower part of the bay, most of them in Adolphustown. Guilliam Demerest, John Parcels, and Roblin, were among these. Some of the settlers drew land, here ; but many purchased, and lots, now worth the highest price, were pro-cured for a very small sum, or for a horse, or cow, or a certain quantity of grain. Some of the settlers had formerly lived in the Lower Province, or in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Also, there was continually coming in, those who felt no longer at home under the new form of government in the States, or who were glad to escape persecution. These were not in time to secure land, and were often called the " Late Loyalists." Then, again, a few years later, when the bitterness of spirit, which had led the rebels to commit such serious acts of cruelty to the loyalists, had subsided, and a degree of intercourse had commenced between the two, it came to pass that many, who had not taken an active part on either side in the contest, and who had friends in Canada, emigrated to the shores of the bay, or, as they called Canada then, Cataraqui. For instance, the Cronks and Ways, who were among the first settlers upon the Marsh front, as the north shore was called, were but the precursors of several others of the same name, who entered about the beginning of the present century. Some of these were, no doubt, influenced by the proclamation issued by Simcoe. Nathaniel Solmes was one of the older settlers. He came from Duchess County in 1792, lived in Adolphustown two years, then settled on lot No. 10, 1st concession. .... The land was often purchased at a very low price; for instance, lot No. 16, in the 1st concession, was purchased for a horse, harness, and gig. A farm belonging, to Matthew Cronk, was bought for a half barrel of salmon. The Foster-place, where Benjamin Way, used to live, was sold for an old horse. This is one of the best farms in Prince Edward.

2B. Jacob Cronk and Annie Solmes

OVERVIEW
There are two Jacob's in the Quaker record. This one is always referred to as Jacob Cronk (the other one is Jacob Cronkhite) and there is no doubt he is responsible for a Quaker meeting established at Green Point, Sophiasburgh.  His wife, Anne Solmes [PLBQ gives her surname], is prominent in the minutes as well. Jacob was b 1769 so was 14 at the end of the Revolution and thus likely not a Loyalist soldier so he could have been accepted as a Quaker though if he accepted land as a SUE that would have been a problem. He did not petition as a SUE. He was 22 years old when he petitioned in 1791.

In the petitions below Jacob claims to be a "Loyalist" in his 1791 petition. It is telling that the land board does nothing to confirm if he is on the UE list which is standard procedure and notation is made on the fold of the petition. He may have used the word to imply he was "loyal". Peter Johnson, current President of the UE Assoc of Canada emailed me that he "The Jacob CRONK petition is actually rather vague. There is no Jacob Cronk of the Executive UE List." A Loyalist who received land for military service would not be accepted as a Quaker. In my opinion, this Jacob Cronk is not a loyalist.

See Cronk - Cronkhite excerpts from the Quaker minutes.

QUAKER - both Jacobs requested to join at the same time.

OVERVIEW
Born abt 1777, he would be 21 at some point in 1797.  His wife Elizabeth Barker is reprimanded for "marrying out" in the Quaker records below but is allowed to remain a Quaker. This suggests Abraham is not a SUE. Check out Cronk Quaker entries in the minutes.

3. Jacob Cronk and Philadelphia Carman

OVERVIEW
There are two Jacob's in the Quaker record. This one is always referred to as Jacob Cronkhite in the minutes.  His wife Philadelphia (Carman) Cronk(hite) is prominent in the minutes as well. His farm was just west of Bloomfield. He and Philadelphia attended the West Lake meetings at Bloomfield, Hallowell. In the men's minutes; the Jacob of Green Point, Sophiasburgh was always called Jacob Cronk and the West Lake Jacob was always called Jacob Cronkhite. These two Jacobs may be 1st cousins - see below.

No petitions have been found for this Jacob Cronkhite and the OLRI does not show him being granted Lot 4, 1st Con West of West Lake in Hallowell in 1803. This is not unusual as not all records survived. The abstract books for Hallowell show him receiving the lot as a patent from the Crown on 3 Nov 1803.

FAMILY - See my WorldConnect database at the top of the page for more generations.

JACOB CRONKHITE (JOHN, TEUNIS) was born 07 Sep 1768 in Bengall, Dutches Co, NY, and died 1813 in Hallowell, PEC. He married PHILADELPHIA CARMEN, daughter of ADAM CARMAN and PHILADELPHIA TITUS. She was born 1766 in Oyster Bay, NY, and died Bet. 1822 - 1826 in Hallowell, PEC.

Children of JACOB CRONKHITE and PHILADELPHIA CARMEN are:
i. MOSES CRONKHITE, b. 15 Jan 1794.
ii. PHEBE CRONKHITE, b. 24 Sep 1800; d. 21 Apr 1842; m. JOSEPH BOWERMAN; b. 11 Apr 1801.
iii. JOHN CRONKHITE, b. 13 Jun 1802; d. 26 Jun 1865; m. PHEBE BULL.
iv. PETER CRONKHITE, b. 12 Nov 1804; d. 23 Sep 1851, Hallowell; m. RACHEL BOWERMAN, Abt. May 1827, Hallowell; b. 13 Apr 1810; d. 25 Aug 1900.
v. AMY CRONKHITE, b. Apr 1808, Hallowell, PEC; d. 26 Jun 1868, Hallowell, PEC.
vi. SUSANNA CRONKHITE, b. 1810; d. 1828.

Claims are made by Jacob's modern descendants that Jacob is a son of John Cronkhite and Susannah Hoff.  I have no knowledge of a contemporary record that supports this claim and welcome information. If this is true then the two Jacob's are first cousins. They would be cousins because John Cronkhite is a brother of Abraham Cronk Sr of Sophiasburgh and both of these brothers are the fathers of the two Jacobs in question. See the lineage of Teunis above.
On the internet there is a posted lineage with a citation.

6. Hercules Cronkright UE and son William Cronkite

OVERVIEW
Note that Hercules and John's petitons [below] have the same date so it is likely they are closely related.
Peter Johnson, current President of the UE Assoc of Canada emailed that "the Executive Council UE List has Hercules KRONKHEIT, Ernestown Tp. In 1783 Hercules was in Capt John Peter's Coy of Invalids, Coy 3, (Jessup's) Loyal Rangers  Aged 31. 5 ft 6 in.  served 5 yrs 3 mos. from America.
1. I found Hercules CRONKHITE in (Jessup's) Loyal Rangers in 1783.
2. His petition which you quote says "King's Royal Reg't of NY" ????
3. It is unlikely to be both, given that both the 2nd Battn KRRNY and the Loyal Rangers were late War Corps.
4. In Gavin Watt's Master List of the King's Royal Reg't, there is only John Cronkite listed. He must never have spotted Hercules on any KRRNY Muster Roll.
5. Hercules settled initially in Ernestown Tp as far as I know - prime Loyal Rangers area, whereas John [below] in the KRRNY settled in Fredericksburgh Tp (KRRNY territory) and only moved to Ernestown afterwards.
6. I am thinking Hercules was more likely in the Loyal Rangers not the KRRNY despite the odd petition.
7. Petitions were often written by JP's or clerks for settlers years after the event and muster rolls which are more contemporary take precedence to the information in petitions."

OVERVIEW
Peter Johnson, current President of the UE Assoc of Canada emailed that "the Executive Council UE List has John KRONKHEIT Ernestown Tp. John CRONKHITE  a private in 2nd Battn. King's Royal Reg't of NY, but had seen earlier service with the Queen's Loyal Rangers (not Simcoe's), and Leake's Independent Coy.  2nd Battn Yorkers were in Fredericksburgh Tp so I suggest John may have gravitated to Ernestown to be near Hercules, likely a close relation.  John born 1750 in America.
