of the Bay of Quinte WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY: Mark Davenport, Andrew Way, Dennis McAuley and Peter Bolton have brought to my attention this early Frederick family. Peter Bolton writes' "I'm of the belief - but I can't recall the source - that Conrad was one of 5 brothers, the others being Lodowick [Lewis] and Barnet (both with the King's Royal Regiment of New York) and John and Peter (of the King's Orange Regiment), who all came to Canada as UEL's, although Peter's Will, in which he appoints '...my trusty friends John Roblin, Coonrad Frederick...' would tend to shatter the belief." Much good work has been done. This is a project to present the primary sources for all to see and consider. Key Questions The key questions seem to be: Are the Frederick men brothers? Were they all UE Loyalists? Did they come from New Jersey? Were they Palatine germans? Did they come to Upper Canada via New Brunswick? Who did they marry and who are their children. Speculated Frederick Family This lineage is compiled from the petitions on this page and partially from the chart of Donna Sommerfied. It appears that Donna's chart is in error. She shows John C Frederick as a son of Coonrad. The record suggests that her John C Frederick is the John Frederick of Thurlow who claimed to be a UE Loyalist but was expunged from the UE list and disclaimed as such by Coonrad. | Coonrad Frederick Coonrad Frederick (d. March 1844 in Adolphustown) married Elizabeth Rush, daughter of Martin Rush. He was a Seargant in the Jersey Volunteers in 1777 or alternatively in 1778 being employed on the Recruiting Service for Colonel Buskirks Regiment, was imprisoned and had war loses and that he came to Upper Canada in 1788 with 4 children and 5 more were born in UC. He was granted land. From Peter Bolton's notes it appears Coonrad first settled in New Brunswick. In an 1806 petition of Coonrad's daughter, he is said to be in Ameliasburgh and in 1808 a Hallowell record has him there but an 1816 petition of his son says he is in Thurlow. In 1812 Coonrad signs a statement declaring that John Frederick of Thurlow is not a Loyalist. Also from Peter Bolton's research notes it appears that the Frederick's may have been part of the 1710 Palatine settlement in the Hudson Valley, NY as recorded in the Hunter Lists (see bottom of this page). For Example; the Northern Dept. was headquartered in Quebec city, and by War's end the regiments in that jusisdiction were in order of seniority: 84th (Royal Highland Emigrants), King's Royal Regiment of New York (KRRNY), Butler's Rangers, Loyal Rangers, King's Rangers. All Loyalist regiments. Many more regiments were in the Central Dept. which headquartered in New York City, so there is absolutely no problem with someone like Coonrad Frederick joining the New Jersey Volunteers (NJV) or any number of regiments in that area. As for "Buskirk" that name occurs in both the NJV and the King's Orange Rangers (KOR) who like the NJV had many Orange Co NY and Bergen Co NJ names. Seems to me there was a Peter Frederick in the KOR who settled in Bay of Quinte. Regarding New Brunswick; Central Dept. regiments were disbanded in the Maritimes, so those who ended up in "Ontario" did so on their own, and in their own time: e.g. Wanamaker, Redner, Babcock, Johnson, Stoneburgh, Cole, Post, Frederick, Ketcheson etc). Source: email from Peter Johnson, President, United Empire Loyalist Assoc of Canada, 24 Mar 2007 REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORDS Conrad's actual involvement in the Revolution has yet to be proven, as 'joining the Royal Armie' is too vague to mean anything, although it was often used. He could have gone to where the army was and tagged along. He hasn't appeared on any muster rolls, but the rolls for this battalion start in November of 1777, somewhat later than those that exist for other regiments stationed in the exactly a year before, and there is little doubt a number of officers and men passed into and out of it before these rolls start. As happened with other Loyalists, he could have been on and off without our knowing it. An indication that he was being truthful about his military service is found in an 1812 UCLP entry [C-1895:F10/45] in which he certifies that 'John Frederick of the Source: As emailed from Peter Bolton, Mar 2007 NEW JERSEY PROPERTY CONFISCATION [Extract] A list of the names of all those Persons whose property was Confiscated in the Several Counties of the State of New Jersey, for joining the Army of the King of Great Britain &c. as returned to the Auditors Office, previous to the first day of May 1787. John Frederick Senior of Thurlow John Frederick Senior petitions as a UE in 1797 and is denied as he already has "all the land he is entitled to". He settled on Lot 8, Con 4, Thurlow after selling his granted lot (see below). In 1812 Coonrad declares that John is not a UE and in April 1812 he is "expunged" from the Loyalist list. His children apply for land in 1816 as children of a Loyalist but are denied. It is possible John and Coonrad are brothers but no document has yet been found stating this relationship. | John Frederick Senior regarding Lot 13, Con 4, Thurlow PETITION 1822 There are 11 images of petitions and affidavits pertaining to [51d] On another declaration, dated 25 July 1822, James Purdy heir at law of the late Caleb Purdy certifies that Lawrence Badgley paid “my late father” for the west half of the said lot. Witnesses Ezekl Benson and Richard Purdy [51e] 18 Jul 1822, Thurlow, William Reed heir at law to the late William Reed certifies that Lawrence Badgley has paid for east half of the said lot. Peter Frederick of Fredericksburgh Peter Frederick UE is not mentioned as a possible brother of Coonrad but he is worth investigation. He was with the KOR which is a regiment near where Coonrad enlisted. He arrives with a wife, Mary, and two children and settles in Fredericksburgh. There is a petition of his son John Frederick Junior of Fredericksburgh who married Elizabeth Peterson, dau of Paul Peterson UE. In this petition it states that John Jr is the son of Peter and nephew of John Fredericksburgh and it mentions there is a John in Thurlow. This is an administrative clarification strongly implying that John of Thurlow is not closely related to a John Senior of Fredericksburgh who is brother of Peter of Fredericksburgh . Peter Senior also has a son Peter and Oliver as mentioned in his will. Henry Frederick of Ekford Township - different family? PETITION 1847 2 Mar 1847, Ekford, … that Henry Fredrick settled in 1830 and was located by Thomas Talbot upon a lot of 100 acres and has done his settlement duties and ready to pay fees. I couldn't find any mention of him, but did find your oddball Henry Frederick. I believe that Henry and Jeremiah were probably brothers, as Jeremiah witnessed Henry's wedding to a Mary Ann Humphrey. It's interesting to me that John Frederick married Joanna Haight, as Jeremiah's daughter married a man who was raised by his uncle, a Samuel Haight, in Elgin, Ontario. There is no entry for Daniel's marriage up to 1846 in the Prince Edward County Marriage Register at the Ontario Archives (MS248-4).. 2. I have been unable to locate him in the 1871 or 1881 census. 3. Daniel and his wife (name?) are buried in Burr's Old Loyalist cemetery in Hillier Township, Ontario. 4. I know that he was the son of Martin Jr. whose first wife's name I have been unable to discover, but suspect it might be Jane (see below). Martin's second wife was Hannah Quackenbush, by whom he had: Isaac, Barnet Marvin, Peter Marvin, Marshall Manley, Irvine Manley & John Albert. 5. My notes on his first wife: Nothing has been found to date regarding Martin Jr.'s first wife, by whom he had three children. There is a J. Frederick (1830) buried next to Martin Sr. in Burr's Cemetery...Martin Jr.'s first wife? Or his mother? I speculated, as one of Martin's children by his second marriage to Hannah Quackenbush was named Barnet Marvin Frederick (& Peter's middle name was Marvin), that Martin's first wife might have been a Marvin (Barnet & his wife were next-door neighbours to Martin Frederick in Ameliasburgh). However, in a 1996 e-mail from Phil Ainsworth "Dr. Burr states, "Barnet Marvin was born in Vermont in 1790. He came to Prince Edward County when a young man and married Elizabeth Foster. Many of that group are poling their way up Singleton's Creek to the upper concessions, taking their belongings with them. Their destination is about 15 miles above the mouth where an upper settlement is in progress, though the only communication with the lower people is by water.
