of the Bay of Quinte WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY: Stephen Gilbert had a number of children and this page is dedicated to records that identify these sons and two possible daughters. I got interested because Caleb Gilbert seems to be everywhere in the early records of Sidney. He married Anna Meyers and having found other Gilbert-Meyers connections I was curious to figure out the family. As an aside, I have confirmed the second marriage of Anna Meyers, wife of Caleb, to Thomas Jones and the link to the Dockstader family. See The Gilbert Family: Descendants of Thomas Gilbert, 1582(?)-1659; By: H. W. Brainard, H. S. Gilbert, C. A. Torrey; Published 1953, New Haven, CT. Thanks to Brenda Ozog for this. Thanks also to Mark Davenport for sending New York records about the above Stephen Gilbert and the will of his father Caleb Gilbert. | 1. The
petition of Stephen Gilbert the Elder, 1790 To His Excellency Lord Dorchester, Govenor General and Commander in Chief in and over the province of Nova Scotia, Quebec, etc, etc The Memorial of Stephen Gilbert Loyalist That your Memorialist was an inhabitant of Ulster County, in the Province of New York, during the late War - that in Consequence of his Loyalty and Attachment to the British Constitution, he suffered great hardships during the time of the late Rebellion, having been deprived of the greatest Part of his Property which was not inconsiderable, on account of his Principles - That your Memorialist was twice in New York, during the War, on Government Service and uniformly aided and assisted the King's Cause, by risquing both Life and Property on all Occasions - That your Memorialist, in the year 1787, came to this country, the Incumberance of a large family and his private affairs having prevented him from coming at an earlier Period, with a Recommendation from Mr Cadwallader Colden, in which your Memorialists Character and Circumstances were particularily enumerated - That on producing this Testemonial from Mr Colden, to Stephen DeLancey Esq, Inspector of Loyalists, your Memorialist was recommended by him to the Hon'ble John Johnson - the Hon'ble John Collins Esq Commissioner for granting lands - That your Memorialist, after having satisfied these gentlemen concerning his Character, had encouragement to expect the same indulgence respecting lands, with those who came in at an earlier Period - That Mr Collins gave your Memorialist a Certificate specifying that he was intitled to nine hundred acres of land; four hundred of which he has received, viz Lot 29 first & second Concession, in the Township of Sydney - that in Consequence of his Provision for Himself, a wife & seven children, your Memorialist immediately began to improve said Lot. and sent for his Family and resides with them, at present on the Premises, and has cleared about Thirty acres of the same - your Lordship's Memorialist humbly begs that the remaining five hundred acres mentioned as due to him in Mr Collin's Certificate and your Lordships Bounty may be assigned to him in the unlocated Part of the Township of Sydney. And Your Lordships Memorialist, as in Duty bound. [Signed and dated] Stephen Gilbert Kingston, 12 March 1790 Note: From the signature there is no doubt that Stephen Gilbert wrote the whole petition in a very fine and consistent hand writing with excellent spelling and grammar conventions of the time indicating a high level of education. © Randy Saylor, transcribed 4 Jan 2007 Source: Upper Canada Land Petitions, 1790, V222, Bundle G Misc 1789-95, 46, AO, Film C-2042, on line at LAC starts at image 280 Note: It is curious but not unusual that the Sidney land books do not show Stephen Gilbert as having been patented Lot 29, Con 1, Sidney. It is possible that he died soon after and his sons all had other land so somehow this lot was patented to others. PETITION MARCH 1790 Land Board, 24 Mar 1790, Stephen Gilbert of Sidney hath stated his case so fully in his petition that we have only to observe that his representation appears to be a very fair one & his character so unquestionable, that he was in the year 1788 appointed oone of the Commissioners of the Peace for this District. His case appears similar to James Smith's mentioned 12 Aug last to whom the Council have directed 700 acres to be assigned. On a certificate of his Loyalty from Cadwallader Colden Esq, Mr Delancy Inspector of Loyalists recommended him to Sir John Johnson & Mr Collins and 900 acres of land were assigned him for himself, a wife & seven children, of which he has received but 400 acres, he prays for the remaining 500, together with the additional bounty of 200 acres. Considering the Land Boards statement of his case the recomendation of the Board & that he is in the commission of the Peace, this Committee humbly advise the prayer of this petitioner be granted. Brenda Ozog supplied this detailed reference. "There is a land record mentioned in the book "The Gilbert Family: Descendants of Thomas Gilbert, 1582(?)-1659; By: H. W. Brainard, H. S. Gilbert, C. A. Torrey; Published 1953, New Haven, CT In which Stephen Gilbert and Eunice his wife, Philip Miller and Elizabeth his wife, and Leonard Nichols and Ruth his wife, all of Ulster County NY, conveyed 7 DEC 1781 to Benjamin Nichols of Stratford, CT, part of a farm in Stratford called Birdsey's farm. (Stratford Land Records, Vol 2, page 91). I found that Leonard Dowden Nicoll married Ruth Birdsley (IGI record of 7 DEC 1768, also noted in the DAR -496) and I have an IGI record of a birth of Phillip Miller to parents Philip Miller and Elisabeth Birdseye christened 10 SEP 1780 Dutch Reformed Church, Montgomery, Orange, New York, so I'm assuming Eunice is also a Birdseye and they inherited land in CT from either Samuel the father or Abel Birdseye, the grandfather. 2. The Children of Stephen Gilbert The well known book, the Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte has a Gilbert family history (pages 371-375). It states that 5 brothers came to Canada: Abel, James, Stephen, William and Caleb, Loyalists from NY and settled on the Front of Sidney. It does not name the father or mother. I propose with some confidence that Stephen Gilbert, of the above petition, wife unknown, is the father of these Gilbert sons. The strongest record is the petition of James who states he is "the son of Stephen Gilbert." 1. Abel petitions as a Loyalist, the only 'son' to say so. 2. Caleb petitions that he came in 1787. 3. Stephen petitions in 1797 that he has been in the province for 10 years and never rec'd land - so he is junior, and very likely a son of the senior Stephen who rec'd 900 acres. 4. William - No record of William has been found and his naming is likely an error in PLBQ. 5. Samuel petitions on the same date and uses the same format as Caleb in 1790 so is likely a brother and also receives one half of a lot and Caleb gets the other half. 6. James petitions that he came in 1787 as a boy and is a son of Stephen Gilbert. 7. Elizabeth Sarah m. Levi Homan. 1. | 10. Sarah Gilbert There were actually 7 children, the 7th was a woman, Elizabeth Sarah (we believe her name was) and was not named in the will. She later petitioned the government for land, wondering why a woman couldn't have a farm. Sarah Gilbert was born on July 17, 1782, in Ulster County, New York, the child of Stephen. She had 5 children with Levi Homan. She died on July 2, 1867, in Thurlow, Canada, having lived a long life of 84 years. Source: email May 2015 from Liz Moult. I have records of this beyond this email. Back to Top |
