Death (Story)
|
Singular Circumstance – On Saturday night last, a small
girl, the daughter of William McDonald, between six and seven years of age,
got up in her sleep and walked two miles from home, returned and went to bed
without waking and although the cold was intense, and the child had no other
than her sleeping clothes on, yet she escaped no greater injury than having
her toes somewhat frozen. In the
morning when she awoke, she related the transaction as a dream, stating that
she went in pursuit of her brother whom she thought was at the
schoolhouse. And on examining the
road, her tracts (sp) were plain to be seen through the whole distance.

Death (Story)
|
Fire. On Saturday
evening last, a house of a Mr. Scott, of Sophiasburgh, was consumed by
fire. The fire took place in the
absence of Mrs. Scott, who went to a neighbor for a pail of water. She had been absent for about half an hour
when on her return, she found the house enveloped by flames. A child 2 years old was left in a cradle,
which in all probability left it to escape the smoke and flame as its bones
were found under where the bed stood.
This is among the many melancholy instances which have been related in
newspapers. The public has had these
admonitions time after time, “to be cautious of fire and do not leave
children alone in the house.” The
house and furniture were entirely consumed.
It is hoped the hand of Charity will be extended in this inclement season,
to the unfortunate sufferers.

Suddenly at the Carrying Place on the 1st
inst., after a lingering illness which he bore with utmost patience and
Christian fortitude, James Young, Esq. aged 54 years. He died much regretted by a numerous circle
of public as well as private friends; for he was long and extensively known,
and known to be an impartial Magistrate – a Lenient officer – a dutiful son –
an affectionate husband – and kind and indulgent parent – an obliging
neighbor, and to possess a tender, charitable and benevolent heart, which
makes his loss more deeply and seriously felt by all that knew him. His funeral was most numerously and
respectably attended on Sunday the 3d instant, at what time there was a most
affecting, appropriate and impressive sermon delivered by the Rev. Mr. Grier

Dissipation and Death.
On Saturday morning last, a person was found near the distillery of
Mr. Allen Munro, at the lower end of this village, lying on his back, and
perfectly stupid. He was a native of
Ireland, by the name of Barnard Cosgrove, and had been in the place but a few
weeks. He was taken from the situation
in which he was found, and carried to his house, where he remained until
sometime in the afternoon, so he so far recovered as to be able to speak, and
stated that some man (his name not known) had given him the whiskey he had
wanted the night previous. He,
however, soon expired. An Inquest was
held over the body on Sunday, and examining what witnesses could be obtained,
the Jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death by drinking
ardent spirits on the night of the 19th ult. He has left a wife and three children to
mourn his untimely death. We sincerely
hope that this example will prove a warning to all those who are in the habit
of making free too free use of intoxicating liquors.

Coroner’s Inquest
|
A Coroner’s Inquest was held at the East Lake in the
Township of Hallowell at Isaac Scott’s place on the 15th inst. on
the body of John McDonald. Verdict of
the Jury, that the said John McDonald came to his death by a fit caused by
Intoxication. It seemed like the
deceased had been in the habit of drinking spirituous liquors for a length of
time previous to his untimely end, and on the day of his death he went to the
field in order to get a horse; and while engaged in getting the horse over a
fence, he attempted to get away, the deceased held fast to his main (sp) and
was swung round – being in an intoxicated state he fell to the ground and
died immediately. Thus we have another
incident of the baneful effect of taking Spirituous Liquors, and which it is hoped
will prove a salutary warning to all who may be addicted to so evil a
practice.

From the Christian
Guardian of Feb. 1. Died this
morning at half past five o-clock, Hannah, wife of the Rev. E. Ryerson, aged
28 years. She has left, to sustain her
loss, a husband and two children – a son and daughter – the former aged two
years and a half, the latter two weeks and three days. In her life were most conspicuous the
graces of patience, meekness and love; during the whole of her last illness
was remarkably illustrated what has been called “the majesty of faith,” or
what the Apostle terms, “the riches of the full assurance of faith,” and “the
riches of the full assurance of understanding.” Among the many similar expressions which
she emphatically uttered during her illness, especially the last twenty-four
hours of it were, “it is a truth that the religion of Jesus Christ is no
cunningly devised fable. Jesus is all
my portion – He is all to me than all the world besides.” “Not a cloud doth arise to darken my skies
or hide for a moment the Lord from my eyes.”
“I long to be with Jesus, I only wait His bidding.” “I shall soon meet sister Metcalf.” “O, death, where’s thy sting? O, grave, where’s thy victory?” Some of her last words, about 15 minutes
before her release were, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

Death-Letter to Editor
|
An Awful Providence.
Mr. Editor. Sir, - Viewing in
your Editorial remarks in the last number of the Free Press, a short notice
of a distressing scene which occurred tin this town on Sunday last, relative
to the death of Mr. Philip Clapp, and believing a more particular description
of this awful exhibition of Omnipotent
power would be satisfactory in some of your readers and might convey
through the medium of the press, intelligence of the awful catastrophe to
some distant friends, I send you for insertion a detail of the circumstances
as far as I have been able to collect them.
The deceased it appears after returning from preaching on Sunday
afternoon, went into the field to drive up his cows; on his return a sudden
thunder shower arose, and before he could reach his dwelling to elude the
rain that now descended in torrents, it would appear he took shelter under
the wide spreading boughs of an elm.
He had not remitted long under this fabled asylum before a flash of
lightning came in contact with the top of the tree, said descending the same
with the quickness of thought, hurried the victim of its vengeance into the
presence of the “Judge of the quick
and the dead.” And here let me
observe, that it would be injustice of language to attempt to give a literal
description of the scene be a non-beholder; suffice it to say, that not one
thread of his clothing remained on his body when first discovered, except the
collar of his shirt and his neck handkerchief. From appearance the electric fluid passed
down the body, tearing and scattering to the distance of several rods the
entire clothing had had on, passing out at the bottom of the foot, without
injuring the body to outward appearance, except the second toe, which was cut
off. A Coroner’s Inquest was held on
Monday before S. Washburn, Esq., - Verdict of the Jury – “that the deceased
came to his death by a stroke of lightning.”
On Tuesday his remains were carried to “that borne from whence no
traveler returns” said a throng of weeping friends and relations. A very solemn feeling and appropriate
address was delivered by the Rev. R. Heyland, founded on Numbers 23d Chapt.,
10th verse, “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my
last end be like his.” Yours
respectfully, J. Rose Marysburgh, Sept 19., 1932

|
We regret to state that as three brothers of the name
of McCumber were sailing up the Bay of Quinte on Saturday last in a small
wherry, one of them, named Franklin, in putting down the rifle in which had
just missed fired in his hands, inadvertently struck the cock against the
edge of the deck on which he had been standing: the ball entering the lower part of his
abdomen escaped by the right side of neck.
It is needless to state that death was the immediate consequence. The accident was witnessed on board the
Britannia Steam Boat when the Commander instantly ordered her about and
rendered every assistance which humanity could dictate to the unhappy
surviving brothers. The young man
whose death we have just recorded was an emigrant from the State of New York,
he was by trade a wagon maker and was possessed of active and industrious
habits.
