My Mother's Scottish family WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY: My maternal grandfather, John McIntosh was from Fisherton, Petty Parish, Inverness on the Moray Firth. Fisherton was, as the name suggests, a fishing village. A lineage done in the 1960's by a cousin in Scotland was helpful but did have an error mentioned below. Thanks to Pat Sedgwick, Harriet and Jean Bannerman, Stewart and Valerie Moir, Alexander Norton for all their help. |

1. OVERVIEW Research done in the 1960's by Pat Sedgwick, a cousin in Scotland, was the starting point for this lineage of my mother's McIntosh family from the fishing hamlet of Fisherton [now Westerton], Parish of Petty, Inverness. Westerton is just west of the Inverness Airport and is a hamlet of about 15 homes. It is too small to be named on Google maps! It appears that the lineage starts with Lachlan McIntosh and Ann McBean of Petty who christened their son John on 8 Sep 1756. It is felt that this John is the same John McIntosh who married Isobel Cameron on 29 Feb 1776 in Petty. There is no real proof that John is the same man in both records but both are from Petty. John McIntosh and Isobel Cameron had a number of children christened in the Parish Church in Petty from 1777 to 1794. My family lineage proceeds through their son William who was christened on 29 June 1794 in Petty. This William married Margaret Davidson on 27 Nov 1817 in Petty and died 29 July 1855. His death record (see below) names his parents as John McIntosh and Isobell Cameron and his wife as Margaret. They had a number of children and my lineage proceeds through their son John, b. 1826 who married Helen Patience. A number of records confirm that my grandfather, John McIntosh, b. 1865, was their son and he came to Canada and prospered. The records for this lineage are quite solid back to John McIntosh and Isabel Cameron; the key linking documents being the death registrations of William McIntosh and his wife Margaret Davidson who both who died in 1855. One is never 100% certain about these things. Jean Alker has come forward with a William McIntosh 1794-1855 who married Jean Campbell in 1819 and suggests that this William is the son of John McIntosh and Isabel Cameron. See her email for your consideration. It would be great to hear from people who can provide more about the various children named in this lineage and to see how many of them emigrated to other parts of the world. A COMMENT about the research below. I did most of this research in 2003 using the IGI index available through the LDS familysearch.org web site. The key films for Petty Parish are available through the Family History Library. I have not examined these films but hope to do this as witnesses may be named that could add useful information. It is said she did not marry. There is a photo of this women. It is possible that this Margaret is that person. 6. EMAIL "My fathers mother was Leonora Brown née McIntosh, she married William Brown, in late 1890s. Leonora's father was William McIntosh b.1830, m. Margaret Clark in 1860 in Dover. He had three children, Joseph Edwin, Mary Ann and of cours Leonora. His father was also William b.1794 d. 1855. m.1819 to Jean or Jane Campbell. He had 5 children - Donald, Charles, James, Malcolm and of course William. Both William McIntoshes were in 42nd Foot, William senior served in India, and Crimea and was awarded medals for same. John McIntosh b. 1756. m.1776 to Isabel Cameron. I think this is were we differ in our research, he was father to William and 5 other children. The family seemed to stay around Petty, Inverness and Leonora's father married Margaret Clark in Dover where he was based in 42nd Foot, after returning from overseas. Certificates I have: marriage 1776 John McIntosh and Isabel Cameron 1756. Birth John son of Lachlan and Ann McBean 1794 Birth William son of John and Isabel 1819 marriage William McIntosh to Jean Campbell, this states in Militia 1855 Death William McIntosh 1860 Marriage William McIntosh b.1830 (son of above William) to Margaret Clark born Dover and marriage took place there while William was stationed in Militia. 1867 Birth of Joseph Edwin Robert McIntosh son of William above Also two other children Leonora who m. William Brown and Mary Ann who married John Fernie 1892 1882 death William McIntosh husband of Margaret Nee Clark 1884 Death of Margaret McIntosh wife of William Discharge papers for William McIntosh b.1794 served over 22 years in 42nd Highlanders Discharge papers for William son of above b.1830 served over 20 years in 42nd Highlanders including India and Turkey where he was wounded and awarded medals. Apart from Joseph, Leonora and Mary Ann, the family seemed to live in the area of Petty, Inverness and both William's state Militia. I have wondered if William married twice, first to the Margaret Davidson you have, possibly she died young." Source: emails from Jean Alker, May 2013 |
