| OVERVIEW Lavina Saylor came to Upper Canada around 1810 with her brother and her mother and maybe her father. They settled in Bloomfield, Hallowell Township, Prince Edward County. In 1826 she marrried Judah Bowerman, becoming his 4th and last wife and mother of five of his eight children. They were a Quaker family. For more detail on her parents and coming to Upper Canada use the links for her brother and parents above. Judah and Lavina owned lot 18, 1st Concession N.W. of West Lake. Part of this lot is known as "The Hill." There is a small rise or hill on the south side of the road overlooking a marshy cove that is part of West Lake. The first Quaker Meeting House was built on this hill and the burial ground was there as well. In 1810, a new Meeting House was built in Bloomfield and a new Quaker burial ground was established across the street. This farm was kept in the Bowerman/Cronk family for over 200 years until sold by the last owner, Marion Cronk. Members of the family continued to be buried "on the Hill", including Lavina and the last burial to be permitted was Marion Cronk in 2009. A lot of ephemera had been kept by the family on the farm and this material is now the Marion Cronk Fonds held at the Quaker Archives in Newmarket, ON. It was in this material that the work of Albert C. Bowerman was found revealing the parentage of Charles and Lavina. Judah's first wife was Abigail Hughes, sister to Sam Hughes who was an influential figure in the Yonge St Quaker Meeting and the Children of Peace movement. It is through this connection that his journals and many letters also ended up in the hands of Marion Cronk. |

SOURCE NOTES PARENTS "Judah Bowerman - mar. (4) Lavinia Saylor, dau of Samuel Saylor and his wife Margaret Jones, of Mount Holy, NJ, 30 July 1826. Lavinia was a sister of Charles Saylor, and of Jemima Hubbs, she was born 11th of Nov 1789; and died on the "hill", where she is also buried, 11th of July 1862. The Saylor family were of german descent; tho not Friends [note: Jemima Hubbs was a Friend - Randy Saylor]. Aunt Lavinia however became one of the best known and respected of a society known widely for its consistent and charitable generosity, few of that generation were so well known as "Aunt" Lavinia , and she probably bears the unique distinction of being the only Quaker woman who had the honour of a "Dead-march" played before her house by an "Orange" Brass band.. Out of respect to her well cherished memory the Band, having visited Wellington on the 12th July played the "Dead-March" in passing Uncle Judah's house of mourning."
