The molecular genetic study at the University of Michigan. 

All three brothers of the Silver pioneers have hearing loss in their lines.  Everyone thinks they are the only one, making it more difficult to convince people.  There are about 45 Silvers with significant hearing loss living today or in recent memory.  I am one of that group.  For the study, the University needs a large group of Silvers with or without loss in order to separate the Silver DNA from other DNA.  Then they need a group of 10 - 15 of us with hearing loss.  It is done with privacy in mind.  The name is not attached to the sample.  People can quit at any time.  No travel involved.  The University pays for everything and they are good at this.  Things have been very well organized. 

I am the person responsible for gathering people to participate and not having a lot of luck.  The only benefit will be to future generations.  Considering the carrier of the trait was born about 1616, this is a powerful gene or genes.  Most of us by far are born normal and think we lose our hearing because of exposure to noise or a number of other reasons.  Some are born deaf, but not many.  Four of that group had cousin marriages giving 3 X Silver DNA to those children.  I track all Silver cousin marriages of which there is one in the next generation and it appears that the extra Silver cousin only increases the chance of hearing loss a little.  We have non syndromic hearing loss which had long thought to be genetic in cause, but they have not had the people or opportunity to study this until now.  They publish a newsletter for interested people.
The three Silver Pioneers to Upper Canada

1.  Timothy Silver5 ( Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1 ) was baptized 18 June 1769 at Amesbury, Essex County, MA, son of Samuel Silver, III and Judith Colby[1][2].  Timothy along with his brothers Daniel and Abner emigrated about 1815 [sic] to Canada.  They settled near Kingston, Ontario where they spent the remainder of their days[3].  His wife is unknown.  It appears from Cramahe census records that his wife died in 1819 or 1820.  He married again soon and had one more child.  She died before 1839 when his son, Samuel and family are living with his.  He died 27 August 1846 and is buried in Hubell Cemetery at Whitby, Durham County, Ontario, monument erected by James Silver.

2.  Abner Silver5 ( Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1 ) was born 05 April 1771 at Hopkinton, Merrimack County, NH, son of Samuel Silver, III and Judith Colby[2].  His wife's name is not known, but she was born in NY, probably where Abner, Jr. was born.  He died 10 December 1821 at Bath [originally Ernestown], Lennox & Addington County, Ontario[5].

3.  Daniel Silver5 ( Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1 ) was born 07 March 1773 at Hopkinton, Merrimack County, NH, son of Samuel Silver, III and Judith Colby[2].  He married Polly Frederick, daughter of Conrad Frederick and Elizabeth Rush.  He died 08August 1849.  She died 27 March 1851.  Both are buried in Hubbell Cemetery at Whitby, Durham County, Ontario.  His headstone reads D. Daniel.  He and Polly are in the list of The Loyalists of Ontario, Sons and Daughters of the American Loyalists.  [Daniel's father served in the Rev. War as did his brother Samuel.  He was not the son of a Loyalist.]

4.  James Silver6 ( Timothy5, Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1 ) was born 02 August 1801 at Ernestown, Lennox & Addington, Ontario, son of James Silver.  His mother's name is unknown.  He married 20 February in Ontario, Sarah F. Dunham.  She was born 15 January 1816 in Ontario, possibly the daughter of Job Dunham and Elizabeth Jacobs.  They moved to Berrien County, MI in 1846/47, perhaps after the death of his father in August.  She died at Benton Harbor, berrien County, 24 February 1875, congestion of the brain.  He died about 1887.  They are buried in Morton Hill Cemetery at Benton Harbor.  Farmer.[7]

      21.   vi.   John Silver7, b abt. 1843 in Ontario.  Civil War.  He enlisted 29 August 1862, age 19, in Company M, 4th Valvary Regiment Michigan.  he was captured as a POW 15 December 1862.  He died as a prisoner 18 December 1862 at Chattanooga, TN.

5.  Samuel Silver6 ( Timothy5, Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1 ) was born about 1803 in Ontario, son of Timothy Silver.  His mother's name is unknown.  He married Katherine unknown  in Ontario.  They moved to Elgin, Kane County, IL between 1841 and 1850, probably 1846/47 after his father died.  She died before 1880.  He died after 1880.  In the census he claimed his father to be born in NH and his mother in NY.  Farmer.

She was born about 1818 and died in 1878 at Bowmanville.  He died 09 February 1882, paralysis.  Both are buried in Bowmanville Cemetery at Darlington, Durham County.  Pump maker / chair maker.
