| Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte SMITH, Main Page Why I am interested in this man. A number of researchers are trying to unscramble the Smiths in early Sidney Township and Richard has become part of the mix. Did this Richard Smith marry Elizabeth [Betsy] Lake? There is nothing difficult about the research presented given that a will and many petitions have survived. However the family story is a nice example of a loyalist starting out around Adolphustown and making his way to Sidney - a track well worn by others. | 1. OVERVIEW Only one Richard Smith is found in the early records of Sidney and Thurlow. There is a second Richard Smith in Upper Canada at the time but he is located near Cornwall and Kingston. Richard Smith, eventually of Thurlow, is a loyalist most likely with Vanalstine's Associated Loyalists in Adolphustown. No petitions have been found for Richard and this is not unusual for an early Loyalist. He is named in the land books as receiving land as a Loyalist. Most of his children successfully petitioned for land grants as sons and daughters of a Loyalist. He dies before 1835 given that his will is probated in that year. It appears that Richard Smith first received a 100 acre land grant in Adolphustown (lot 16, con 1). In 1790 the Land Board gave these early Loyalists a second grant and Richard received 200 acres (lot 1, con 5, Thurlow). He chose to settle on his Thurlow land. He is not shown in the Adolphustown census date from 1794 onward. In 1795 he is named in the Sidney Township Minute book which included Thurlow at that time. A number of researchers think Richard Smith of Thurlow married Betsy Lake, daughter of Nicholas Lake. See the section below that discusses this possibility in detail. Richard's 1828 will states that his wife is named Elizabeth, that he lived on lot 12, con 5, Sidney, and ten children are named. The 1824 petition of his daughter, Sarah, gives some detail of Richard's first land grant; "that he formerly resided in Township of Ernestown at that time cald or known by the name of vacant lands and that he drew 200 acres in Thurlow being lot 1, Con 5 and 100 acres in the New Castle District." This statement is partly supported by the fact that a Richard Smith received 100 acres in Adolphustown but not Ernestown. Probably, after 30 plus years, Sarah was not perfectly clear where the early grant had been and it is most likely that Richard's first grant was in Adolphustown. About 1790 he is living on his Thurlow lot and in 1812 he sells this lot and buys lot 12, con 5 in Sidney where he spends his remaining 20 plus years. Also, some researchers think that Richard Smith is the same man as John R Smith in the early record. This is still an open question. |
| 2. DID THIS RICHARD SMITH marry ELIZABETH [BETSY] LAKE? In 1797, Elizabeth Lake, daughter of Nicholas Lake, petitions as "Betsy Smith" but does not state the first name of her husband. The 1828 will of Richard Smith names his wife as Elizabeth. The eldest son of Richard and Elizabeth Smith is Nicholas Smith. Betsy Smith and Richard Smith are entered in Land Book C beside each other along with Nicholas Lake. These strongly suggest a connection in support of the assertion that Besty Lake married Richard Smith. Many on line lineages show this above couple as valid. Does anyone know of original documentation that supports this claim? Are Richard and Elizabeth contemporaries? Elizabeth Lake is born in 1777 in Renesselaer Co., NY. Richard Smith is a UE Loyalist so would be born generally at least by 1765 and probably earlier. Nicholas Lake is granted Lot 36, Con 5, Sidney and Richard Smith is granted lot 1, con 5, Thurlow which is just a few farms away. Certainly Richard and Elizabeth were close neighbours. The most compelling clue is the naming of the eldest son - but no solid conclusion can be made based on the paper evidence to date. Unless proven otherwise, I have accepted as probable that Betsy Lake married Richard Smith. Doug Smith, a descendant of this family, wrote in March 2017 that, "I recently submitted my DNA to Ancestry and got this match to a Lake descendant. I know we have not had proof such as a marriage document for Richard and Elizabeth, but possibly this DNA link is proof enough." This is excellent support for Richard Smith and Elizabeth Lake to be the above couple. The one fly in the ointment is that in the 1784 Return for Adolphustown Richard Smith is shown with a woman. Presumably this would be a first wife and that fits if Betsy was a younger second wife. | 3. LOYALIST RECORDS There are two loyalist Richard Smiths. The Richard Smith who was in the King's Royal Reg't of NY settled in Onasbruck (Cornwall area) and is not the Richard Smith in question. Most probably, the Richard Smith who is the subject of this web page is the Associated Loyalist in the return below. He would have come with Vanalstine to Adolphustown and this matches the land grant where he received lot 16, con 1, Adolphustown. See OLRI index on microfiche at AO. 1790 HEIR & DEVISEE [film H-1139, image 424] On June 30, 1789, Richard had received a location certificate for Lot 1, Con. 5 Thurlow. On 17th September, 1790, Richard gave up his claim to half of Lot 16, Con. 1, Adolphustown. He must have sold or given his right to Adolphustown to Conrad VanDusen. In looking at Location Certificates from 1784, there are many with 2 , 3 , and even 4 names on, so it was common. Richard and Conrad may have had no relation to each other, based on other Certificates I have seen. What is clear is that Richard was entitled to 500 acres. First, 100 in Adolphustown, then 200 in Thurlow. Lastly, his petition in June of 1797, asked for 200 acres. On the back of it, “200 acres to close all claims” was crossed out and replaced with “100 acres family lands” This land was in Clarke Township, Durham County, next door to the 200 acres his wife Betsey received. That is the 300 acres my grandfather Nicholas settled on. Doug asks, what had Richard done to be entitled to 500 acres? The location tickets granted 1 Oct 1788. This Richard Smith is not the same man who settled in Thurlow and is the subject of this web page. There may be a connection between the four name men. 17. Is Richard Smith the son of Claudius Smith of Orange, NY "I have been looking over some of your information on Richard Smith, and have some new ideas to put forward. I have long wondered if Richard could be the son of Claudius Smith, the infamous Tory of Smith’s Clove, Orange, New York. All accounts say his son Richard went to Nova Scotia after the war. In looking at the Carleton Papers index, it mentions a Richard with wife and child, bound for Nova Scotia. Also on the same list are Phillip and Owen Roblin, stating Nova Scotia as their destination. However, we know these were Refugee Loyalists who came as a group to Adolphustown. It is interesting that the Roblins were from Smith’s Clove, and their name is associated with the Claudius Smith gang. Even Peter Ruttan who brought them on his ship was from the same area. | 18. RICHARD SMITH of BELLEVILLE There is a second Richard Smith in the area at this time. It appears he had sons Joseph, James and daughter Jane. Richard Smith, a native of County Cork, Ireland, late of Belleville, aged seventy three years, died Tuesday 27 & was buried on Thursday 29 Jan 1829. "There was another Richard Smith who was the son of Benjamin Smith of Northport near Picton. They were Long Island NY and Mayflower descendants. You will find some info on them in Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte. My Stephen H Smith is part of that family and in his death notice says that he was born in Long Island NY. He was the son of Richard, I'm pretty sure and so was his sister Nancy Smith. The obit in the Canadian Watchman, Kingston states that: 31 Dec. 1830 On 17th inst. Richard Smith, eldest son of Benjamin Smith, of Sophiasburgh, was drowned in attempting to cross the Bay, near the Big Island, on the ice. | 19. NICHOLAS SHARRARD FAMILY CONNECTION First email There is a connection between the Smith family and the Sharrard family . But like you, we wish we could document it. All we have to go on was a snapshot that one family member had of Maria Sharrard and on the back it named her and said "niece of Nicholas Smith". Her mother was Jane Smith .... that we know, but no Jane is named in Richard`s will. So, I am unable to explain. Source: email from Ruth Waite, Dec 2012 Second email I have been looking for the parents of Jane Smith b. c.1796 Thurlow, Hastings. My connection with her is her Sharrard husband Nathaniel. Nathaniel is my 3rd great grandfather. His father William Sharrard was a U.E.L as well. The email above mentions a connection to the Sharrards having a Maria Sharrard as a niece of Nicholas Smith. If this Nicholas is the sibling of Jane it would make her so. Nathaniel and Jane (Smith) have a daughter Maria b. 1840. I understand that Nathaniel and Jane came to Pickering township around 1831, four years before this Richard dies. Why was she not in the will I wonder? You also mentioned that maybe there was a first wife and Betsy was a second wife. Another thought might be that Jane was a product of a first wife before Elisabeth Lake.
