Pioneers
of the Bay of Quinte WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY: Hannah Tompkin (1757 - aft 1811) married William White (abt 1750 - 1811) and they were born in NY and settled in Sidney around 1800. A bunch of us have worked hard at finding out who their NY families were without success. In the 1790's and shortly after, a few "Tompkins" pioneers have been identified in Upper Canada. This page is dedicated to identifying them, determining any connections, and the focus will be on Samuel and Stephen Thompkins of Sidney Township and any relation to the above Hannah (Tompkins) White. It is possible that Philip Tompkins of Cramahe is a brother to Stephen. |

1. SAMUEL and STEPHEN TOMPKINS, SIDNEY TP. OVERVIEW Stephen and Samuel Thompkins are elected to Sidney Township duties beginning in 1804. The working hypothesis is that Samuel Thompkins and Hannah (Thomkins) White are siblings, and Stephen Tompkins is a son of Samuel, all born in NY and came to Sidney around 1800, a few years before 1804. They were not loyalists and they did not petition for land. This implies they had enough money to purchase the better land. Samuel is absent from the land records in Sidney and is last recorded in 1807 in the Township Minute book. Stephen owns Lot 3, Con 5 in Sidney which is very near Frankford and in the 1820's moves to Murray Tp, Lots 1 and 2, Con 2 which is not far away. This is the same man. It appears that Abraham is his son. Samuel and Stephen are either father and son or brothers and Samuel likely dies shortly after 1807. Possibly he leased the same farm that Stephen later buys. SIDNEY TOWNSHIP MINUTE BOOK The list below comes from the transcription of the Sidney Township Minute Book that is on this web site. Samuel and Stephen Thompkins are adults in 1805 so are likely born in the US and could be related to Hannah (Tomkins) White. The later names are likely their children. |

8. TOMPKINS in WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY So far I have found Nathanial Tompkins Sr. who died in 1684 leaving a minor son Nathaniel -- and one of his executors was Nathaniel White. See a record involving the estate of Nathaniel White who died in 1690, and had a minor son William. As a adult, William assembles a series of adjacent plots of land up until 1732 when he sells his land. This land is adjacent to the land of Nathaniel Tompkins Senior and Nathaniel Tompkins Junior. After 1732 there are no more records for any William or Nathaniel Whites in Westchester until 1785 and that is a William White from Stamford, CT."
