My main WHITE page WHY WE ARE INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY: The research puzzle is to connect William White and Hannah Tompkins who came to Sidney Township, Upper Canada around 1800 into the White families residing in and near Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, NY after the Revolutionary War period. We feel we have identified this White family in NY. The evidence is of a strongly suggestive type since the neighbouring families intermarried and many came to Upper Canada around 1800. There is speculation in the work below, so be careful. This web page is a collection of research notes to keep track of our thinking and guide us in finding more information. There is a team of people working on this and I want to express my thanks to all of them: Thanks to Jon Acker, Jackie Crerar, Peter Johnson, Barb McGill, Jeanne Ross, Bonny Campbell, Linda Smith and Carol Collins. Thanks to Frank Doherty for his additional information. |

1. OVERVIEW William White (1751 - 1810) married Hannah Tomkins and they and their children leave NY state from either Dutchess County or Schoharie for Sidney Township, Upper Canada, around 1800. No marriage or birth records have been found for them. The key question is - "Is the family of William and Hannah Tomkins in Upper Canada the same family referred to as William White in Beekman in the 1790 census of NY? We think the answer is 'yes'. Note the proximity of Tomkins families living on adjacent farms in the 1790 NY census above. For William White, the number of children in the census fits if one assumes that there was an older son who was deceased by 1810. William and Hannah's children have been identified from Canadian records. Their oldest son (in 1810) Cornelius White (1776-1844) marries Elizabeth Acker in NY. The other children Fanny and Reuben for sure and likely Stephen and Elizabeth settle and marry in Canada. There is also a Sarah White, said to be a cousin of Reuben, who marries Smitton Simmons and settles in Cramahe Tp., UC. The two pieces of key evidence linking the NY family to this Canadian family involve Elizabeth Acker. Her birthdate of 1 Jul 1772 is recorded in the records of the Hopewell Dutch Reformed Church, Hopewell Township of East Fishkill (Beekman) in NY and another completely separate Canadian record has her birth date as 11 June 1772, an image of which is on the web page of William White. This record is a near match and considering how it was collected around 1890 we accept that the two dates refer to the same person. |

There are 12 men in the 1790 NY census with the name William White and below we eliminate all of them except "William White of Beekman" as the William White who emigrated to Upper Canada. Regarding the marriage of son Cornelius to Elizabeth Acker we note that Elizabeth was baptized in 1772 at the Hopewell Dutch Reformed Church. The fact that Cornelius married a non Quaker suggests he was not a Quaker at this time and by extension that his parents were likely not Quaker. In Canada, William and his son Cornelius request and are accepted as members in the West Lake Quaker meeting located in Hallowell Township. Cornelius is recorded in the 1799 Beekman tax lists (see item 4). Nine Partners was a Quaker Monthly Meeting in Dutchess and in 1798 set up the Adolphustown Meeting as a subordinant meeting. Quite quickly Adolphustown became its own Monthly Meeting and West Lake was establish under its wing. Aaron White, somehow connected to the family, was a Quaker in Duanesburgh, NY and was in Canada by 1794 and is in the Adolphustown Quaker minutes in 1798. Aaron may have had some role in encouraging the migration to Canada. Many Quakers from Dutchess migrated to Adolphustown and West Lake. Later, in Canada, a son of Aaron marries a daughter of Cornelius White. There is a statement in PLBQ that the two White families are related. Another William White (see below) who marries Joannah Palmer is in the local NY record and he is a more unlikley candidate for the William White referred to in the 1790 census. The Palmers also lived nearby, some of whom emigrated to Canada. Aaron White married Mary Palmer, sister of Joannah. More work needs to be done to trace this family. It does not appear that William White is linked to the family of Benjamin and Andrew White (below) who were in the area by 1760. Unfortunately our William White and Hannah Tomkins are not mentioned in probate records, land records and church records and only sparsley recorded in other records. We may never be able to link them into other White families with any confidence. | ||
2. 1790 NY CENSUS There are the 12 men in the 1790 census with the name William White and below we eliminate all of them except William White of Beekman as the William White who emigrated to Upper Canada. 1790 CENSUS FOR WILLIAM WHITE IN NY Males incl Head >16, Males <16, All Females incl Head, All other slaves William White, Beekman Town, Dutchess, NY, 2/3/3 - our man X William A White, Washington, Dutchess, NY, 1/2/3 - see the Mabbettsville Whites below X William, The 1st White, Washington, Dutchess, NY, 3/1/3 - see the Mabbettsville Whites below X William, The 3d White, Washington, Dutchess, NY, 1/2/2 - see the Mabbettsville Whites below Those below are very unlikely candidates X William White, Schenectady, Albany, NY, 1/3 - was a patriot and died in Schenectady. 4. SUNDRY "WHITE" RECORDS IN BEEKMAN I thank Frank Doherty, well known author of the Settlers of Beekman Patent, for supplying the records in this section. Our William White is not identified in these records, however Cornelius White, likely his son, is listed in the 1799 tax list below. BEEKMAN STORES White, Abner’s son (Charles?), C374 Abners son Charles, C307 Benjamin, A16 Charles, C374 George, C507 James, B82, C263, C274, C433 Jonathan’s son, C108 Sal (Josiah Dean), C443 William, B21, B23, B34, B50 [Note: The dates of opertion of this store may be a little early for our William to be this man.] The B store was in Beekman (East Fishkill, you should note, is not in Beekman but was part of the Rombout Patent). The only Whites in this store which flourished 1767 through 1773 or so, are James and William. Caleb White (of the Clove - per the storekeeper's note) was at another store (Schenck) about the same time period. Asa & Nathaniel White were at a store in Pawling 1790-95. Asa & Ichabod White were at the Merritt store on Quaker Hill, Pawling 1767-1775 +/-. DEED BOOKS The only Whites listed in the first 25 books of deeds and mortgages in Beekman (up to 1815 or so) are: Asa, Charles, John Jr. and Thomas. TAX LISTS The tax lists ended in 1778 in Beekman. The only list after that is the Oct. 1799 list. Cornelius White is on that list, as is Charles. Cornelius is dirt poor- only $26 personal property, no real property. LEASES There are no leases for Whites in Beekman in any of my sources. QUAKERS The Oblong Quaker records show Andrew, Ichabod, Joshua and Ruloff White in the 1757-1780 minutes. "The only records I haven't looked at are court records and a few other minor ones. This area is tough for records if the name doesn't show up in probate, land or church." 5. WILLIAM WHITE OF MABBETSVILLE, WASHINGTON TP, DUTCHESS These three men below are named in the 1790 and 1800 NY census. William A White, Washington, Dutchess, NY William, The 1st White, Washington, Dutchess William, The 3d White, Washington, Dutchess Kathy Osmond, a descendant of this line, wrote in April, 2014 that: "1. William the 1st is the father of William White Jr. or William White the 3rd. 2. William A. White is the son-in-law of William White the 1st and brother-in-law of William White the 3rd. He is married to Eunice White. 3. William White the 3rd or William White Jr. is the son of William White the 1st and he married Johanna Palmer. His sister, Eunice White is married to William A. (Abner) White. The William White Jr. (the 3rd) living in Nine Partners is the same William White that later moved to Rensselaerville, Albany, New York. His grandfather, Benjamin White came from Salisbury, Connecticut and was welcomed to the Nine Partners Quaker Monthly Meeting the 16th day of the fifth month 1748. I am a descendant of David White born 1764, a brother of this William White Jr. David was born at Nine Partners/Washington, same as his brother, William White Jr. David and William White Jr. left Dutchess County in the early 1800's to live in Rensselaerville, Albany, New York. William White's Quaker records state they Cert to Coeymans 3-21-1805 to settle in Oak Hill. Their children that were born by that time were also mentioned. [FHL US/CAN Film #873511] William married Joanna or Gehannah Palmer, daughter of Benjamin Palmer Jr. and Judith or Judah Lapham. She is mentioned in her mother's will who was also living in Rensselaerville. I don't know exactly who David White married. The quaker records has David White and wife, Phebe, removing to Coeyman's Monthly Meeting too. Another brother, Silas White has David's wife's last name listed as Lapham in his bible and I can't seem to place her with parents. Silas has Johanna's first name blank and last name as Palmer. David White joined the Preston Hollow Baptist Church but William White Jr. and his family are in the Coeyman and Rensselaerville Quaker records. Some of the information about the family is found in this on line excerpt from the Nebraska and Midwest Genalogical Record, Apr, 1927, pages 41-43. There is also a Supreme Court document that lists all the living members in 1850 of the William and Ruth Husted White family (William Jr.'s great-grandparents) The complete document mentions relationships and where they are summoned. [LDS Family History Library US/CAN film #926511, no. 53] I'm not sure where David White, my ancestor, is living in 1790 or 1800. I'm wondering if he was married first to a different wife who died and then he married Phebe because his children aren't mentioned in any of the Quaker records, only Phebe. His first son, Jeremiah was born around 1790 so David was probably married. He and his brother, William White Jr. are both in the Rensselarville, Albany, New York census in 1820 and both died there." Source: email, Kathy Osmond, Apr 2014 Kathy Osmond's email fits with our previous conclusion that the three William White families of Washington Tp are not the William White of Beekman in the 1790 NY census. Note the two White lineages below come together with the marriage of William A White and Eunice White. Jeanne Ross and Jackie Crerar have been examining New England and early NY records trying to find a link that makes sense. Thanks to them for the lineages below. Jeanne Ross writes,"Consider this below with caution – it is mostly compiled from other researchers’ work (more than one, and they didn’t appear to be copying one another). I looked for supporting records, and found some. Quite a lot of the New York material is also in the Quaker records. My opinion is that it is fairly accurate, but don’t assume it is gospel. Also – I do have two generations further back in the White line – but this is all from other researchers and I don’t know if it is true or not. Here it is – the couple that begins the attached is highlighted." FAMILY #1 Jeanne writes, "This is an extremely interesting family because the names look “right” and also because the marriage I marked in red is the merging of two White families. There’s even a Sarah which could possibly be “my” Sarah White who married Smiton Simmons. 1 Benjamin White b: 17 May 1702 in Esopuser (later Kingston), Kinderhook, New York d: Bet. 12 Dec 1756 - 07 Feb 1764 in Crom Elbow Precinct, Duchess County, NY .. +Catryntye Rees b: 1706 in Esophus (later Kingston), NY m: 1725 in Columbia, New York d: 18 Oct 1750 in Salisbury, New Haven, Connecticut ........ 2 Peter White b: in Livingston, Columbia County, New York ........ 2 Arratje White ........ 2 Andrew White b: Abt. 1735 in Crom Elbow Precinct, Duchess County, NY d: 20 Mar 1810 in Plattsburg, New York Residence: 1790 Cambridge, Albany, New York ............ ................... 3 Edward White b: 21 Aug 1759 in Crum Elbow, Nine Partners, Dutchess Co, NY d: 07 Aug 1842 in Peru, Clinton County, New York ....................... ................... 3 Oliver White b: Abt. 1761 in New York ................... 3 Phebe White b: 27 Oct 1761 in Town of Washington, Duchess Co., NY ................... 3 Rachel White b: 18 Jan 1764 in Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York d: 26 Sep 1824 in Mt. 6. WILLIAM WHITE m JOANNAH PALMER 1785 This William White appears to be the son of William White and Ruth Husted above. This William White is not the William White in the Beekman census of 1790. Jon Acker writes, "I really doubt that the Beekman William is the William who married Joannah Palmer who was from Nine Partners which was way up in the northeast corner of Dutchess county (near the border of Columbia Co to the north, and CT to the east). On a modern map, locate towns such as Pine Plains and Northeast Center, and you'll have found the Nine Partners region. Beekman was down in the southern portion just west of Pawling (Poughquag and Green Haven on a modern map are towns that were within Beekman township. And of course Hopewell Junction). Nothing about the info I see suggests to me that William and Joannah might have resided in Beekman. " Jon further speculates that William White who married Joannah Palmer 24 Nov 1785 is probably the brother to Aaron White who married Mary Palmer - sister to Joannah above, who relocated to Prince Edward County by 1794. [This has yet to be proven.] William White and his wife Joannah with children removed from Nine Partners to Creek 21 of 3m 1805. Listed children were: Leonard & Juday (both free of marriage intentions therefore both of age to marry), Solon, Mary, Margaret, William, Sidney, Eben and Abiah. [Early] 2. ANDREW WHITE (1735-1810) m AMY PALMER, Benjamin White (1702-1764) of Dutchess County, the father of Andrew White, dies abt 1764. Andrew and Amy White are Quakers at Nine Partners. It appears from the work below that our William White is not of this family who are in Dutchess quite early. BENJAMIN WHITE WILL (Father of Andrew) Benjamin White who left a Will (d. 1764, Crum Elbow, Dutchess Cty) stating all his stuff to go to his 3 sons: Andrew, William and Peter. No mention of a wife, and William and Andrew were Execs. Crerar ANDREW WHITE WILL I have Andrew White's Will...he had moved to Peru, Clinton County NY and he died in June of 1810 (his father was Benjamin and his son was also named Benjamin). Andrew White had married Amy Palmer back in Beekman and they list kids: Edward, Peter, Joshua, Reuben, William, Nehemiah, Benjamin, Phebe Irish, Rachel Wood, Elizabeth Baker, Cathrine Bordsley (probable eldest dau. of Mary Baker and married), Ruluf (shades of Ruluf Ostrom group??), Palmer (sons). Ruluf and Palmer got the home farm. Ruluf and Palmer were the youngest sons, so it seems to me that Andrew had already settled lands/money on his elder sons who moved elsewhere. So these folks really did move around a fair bit., and I really doubt that the Palmers, Cunninghams, Ostroms and Whites were strangers to each other once they started to 'tame' Upper Canada!
