-----
Thomas J Thorp "GAR" buried in Union Lawn Cemetery, Bethelehem TWP d July 3, 1898

"Index to the Naturalization Records of Stark County, Ohio (1809-1852)" pg 54
Stark Co. District Library, Canton, OH

According to this record, Thomas had to have resided in the US for 5 years and at least 1 of those years in Ohio. That would put his time of arrival at sometime between 1825-6 and Aug 1842.
-----
An affidavit in Moses Thorp's widow's pension by Thomas lists him as Moses' cousin. That would make Thomas' father a brother of Moses' father.
-----
Thomas can be found living with his Uncle and Aunt (Isaiah and Ann Throp) in the 1880 census. Thomas was listed as being blind, (possibly from injuries during the war?)

Naturalization Record Stark Co. OH Friday Aug 13, 1848

"Be it remembered that Thomas Jefferson Thorp and Joseph Tinkler, aliens and subjects of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and John Claudo Mennin an alien and subject of the King of the French come out in open court make applications to become naturalized citizens under the laws of the United States. And if appearing to the court by satisfactory evidence that the said applicants more than three years preecding their arriving at the age of 21 years and for at least five years last past have resided within the limits of the United States, one year of which within this state, that they have during that time behaved as men of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good, order and happiness of the same, and for at least three years last past to become citizens of the United States and the oath allegiance is here administered to the said applicants in due form of law. And it is ordered that certificates of naturalization to be issued to these upon payment of costs of this preceeding. And Court adjourned until 10 O'Clock Tuesday Morning. John K. Greenwood, Associate Judge."

According to the above Thomas had to have been in the U.S. since Aug of 1843 and in Ohio since 1847.

Thomas was 23 if the age on his headstone was correct. If that is the case, he did not meet the criteria above of having "more than three years preecding their arriving at the age of 21 years".
