    Winston-Salem, NC -

Dorie Scroggin, 78, died at Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem, North Carolina on February 22, 2009 after a severe heart attack.

Her final illness, though brief, was not so brief that she was unable to say her goodbyes, and she was comfortable and content.

Dorie, born in Coalinga, California, was valedictorian at University of California Santa Barbara and an accomplished musician.
She lived in Mount Shasta from 1961 to 2008.

Her life was shaped by the death of her husband, John Scroggin, then Chair of the History Department at College of the Siskiyous, and young daughter, Jill Scroggin, in a train wreck at West Lake Street in Mount Shasta in 1967.

Later, she was an actor in local dramatic productions, and owner of the Wayside Inn.

She is survived by her son, Steve Scroggin, a lawyer and Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at Virginia Tech; four grandchildren; and her sister, Fran Mylod and her family.

An informal memorial will be held at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park this Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
