    HERRIN - Noble Reed Gibbons, 84, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, in VA Hospital in Marion.

    Mr. Gibbons was a retired coal miner at Freeman United Orient 6. He also worked for John Vander Trucking.

    Mr. Gibbons was a World War II veteran of the Third Ranger Batalion. He served from 1943 to 1945 and was a prisoner of war in Germany from January 1944 to May 5, 1945.

    He was also a member of Community Chapel Church in Marion.

    He was born in Marion on April 15, 1924, to the late James Gibbons and the late Mary (Scroggins) Gibbons.

    He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie (Dillman) Gibbons of Herrin; one son, Denny Gibbons of Lawrenceville; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Gibbons of Herrin; four grandchildren, Nikki Neal, Shawn Gibbons, Josh Gibbons of Herrin and Colten Gibbons of Lawrenceville; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Norris of Marion; and one brother, Raymond Gibbons of Pittsburg.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, six sisters and one son, Butch Gibbons.

    Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2008, in Van Natta Funeral Home, 427 S. Park, Herrin. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery, with military rites by the American Legion and VFW posts in Herrin. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
