Town Clerk's Report

Our Commonwealth, at considerable expense, has provided by law for a system of registration, and entrusted to the Clergy, Physicians, Boards of Health, Undertakers, and heads of families generally; and to certain state, county and town officials especially, the work of formulating such registration. Of late years in Natick, this work has been done with reasonable care and diligence on the part of those entrusted with its accomplishment, but in spite of all our care and precaution, mistakes appear and errors are found, and as a means of correcting such as may appear to have been made during the past year, and that the manifest will of our law makers may be fully carried out and all errors corrected, I submit the following classified, statistical report, trusting it will be carefully examined and all errors pointed out for correction. Since my last report the State Board of Health, Lunacy and Charity have solicited from this office statements weekly of all deaths happening in the town during that week. I shall be pleased to comply with request, provided I can have prompt returns from the physicians and undertaker.. I trust the beneficial results growing out of the weekly statement published by the Board will amply repay all for the labor contributed.

It is a fact worthy of notice, that our birth-rate does not increase with the growth of our population and appears to have bounds beyond which it cannot go. Only one more birth in 1883 than in 1882, and just as many this year as twenty years ago, when our population was one-third less than at the present time.
