Columbus Battles Jordan Monday

BY CECIL DARBY

Columbus high and Jordan, both sporting unimpressive season records and with little more than second place money in the 1952 Bi-City standings at stake, clash for the 32nd time tomorrow night at Memorial Stadium with a crowd of about 9,000 expected to sit in on the proceedings.
Baker has already wrapped up the Bi-City crown for this year and Central is a cinch for last place with two defeats and a tie. A victory for either squad tomorrow night would mean the runnerup spot.
Columbus will carry the neater season record into the annual thriller. The Blue Devils, after a slow start, have come along rapidly in recent outings to pile up four wins, three defeats and a tie. Jordan has won two games, dropped five and tied one.
Imps Hold Edge
The Blue Devils hold a wide edge in the traditional series which started with a pair of games back in 1907. Columbus has won 18 compared to 10 for Jordan. Three games have resulted in ties.
Jordan will enter the conflict with a 17 day layoff behind it but Coach Sumpter Blackmon commented last night that at least a couple of his boys may not be ready to answer the bell tomorrow night. Bill Williams, a tackle who was injured earlier, is out of shaped and defensive genious Walter Graham, a guard, is probably sidelined with a groin injury.
Coach Dickie Butler is doubtful if his fleet halfback, Bubber Hurst, will see action. "Bubber is rarin' to go in this game," Butler said last night, "but I can't tell him to take that cast of his hand where it was broken. That's up to the doctor."
Underwood, Coulter Doubtful
Center Billy Underwood had siege of the 'flu last week and Dickie Coulter, a spring-legged halfback who saw considerable service in the Imps' 38-13 win over Central, has a pulled leg muscle.
A dozen Red Jackets will play their last high school football tomorrow
night against the Blue Imps. They are Ends Frank McGarr, Charles Cox and L. C. McQuirter; Tackle James Etheridge (Williams also is a senior); Guards Connie Turner and Royce Ehteridge; Center Don Kinser, and Backs James Ferrell, James Storey, Denard Booth and Lamar Chestnut.
Butler rattled off the names of at least seven Blue Imps who are due to graduate before another call for grid candidates rolls around, including Back Hurst, Doug Snipes and Rudy Boyd; Ends John Christofferson and Grady Persons; and Guards Dick Haldeman and Pete Anderson.
Moultrie Game on Tap
The stocky Blue Imp mentor also said that it appears certain now that Columbus will play Moultrie on Thanksgiving Day in making up the scheduled Oct. 10 clash which was postponed due to the polio scare in Moultrie.
"It appears certain that no play-off will be necessary for the regional title involving Moultrie," he said. "The Moultrie ~ Albany game Friday night should settle the championship. If Moultrie wins the game, then it wins the title no matter how they come out with us since Albany already has a tie on its record. If Albany wins the game, then Albany also wraps up the title."
