Preface

My Galloway ancestors surviving collection of letters and pictures seems to lack anything from the 1900s regarding other Galloway families. Thus, when my interest in genealogy developed, one of my objectives was to locate "lost" Galloway relatives. As is probably not unusual, many notes were collected on this and other Galloway families but no living relatives were located. Some of my Galloway ancestors are buried in the Lebanon Pioneer Cemetery. Several years ago when I heard about the project to save that cemetery, I was stimulated to summarize these notes. That brought up some questions about their accuracy. For example, some other sources gave different surnames for the mother and for the stepmother of Vina. Thus, there was need to do some additional data collecting and verification. Although the study is still incomplete, this seemed to be an appropriate time to publish my findings and to make them available to others.

I find that it is important to document the source of each bit of information regarding family history. There are several reasons for this. First, it provides the reader with a list of sources that contain information about the individuals that are mentioned. It points out differences in dates, locations, etc. that may exist in published and unpublished sources. It also suggests the reliability of the information. For instance, census information might be considered less reliable than bible recordings. Family group sheets with no listed sources are always questionable. Thus, in this work, the numbers in parentheses refer to the sources listed for that family. All the material from the previous parentheses is supposed to be presented in the indicated sources. Sometimes, a source will not be included in parentheses even though it provides or suggests information. This is done if the same information is provided by what the compiler considers to be a much more reliable source. Thus, data on a family group sheet may not be specifically indicated if census data or a marriage record reports the same data. Also, approximate year of birth that can be calculated from the ages provided by 1850-1900 census are usually omitted if another source for a date is available. Information that is felt to be incorrect is usually included so the reader is aware of it and knows that it was considered by the compiler.

Some of the connections indicated in this manuscript are based on very weak evidence. An example might be one based on a similarity of name and year of birth. These really represent leads that might be followed by those interested in the family. Another problem is the use of several different given names by an individual. I have documented this in other families and it appears to be the case in some of these families.

A number of additional sources regarding these Galloway families are known to be available. These include the Oregon death index, Portland newspaper indices, and newspaper items such as funeral notices and obituaries. Unfortunately, these are not readily available in Bellingham. It is felt to be more important to make the following material available than to further delay this project. Delayed projects often never get completed. Thus, this work is intended to provide a starting point for others in their research rather than to be a completed history of these families.

Some additional information on these families is known to be available in the LDS (Church of the Latter Day Saints) Ancestral Files. These are not included here because no reply was received in response to a request to that group regarding their use. The user should have no difficulty obtaining that information on their own.

A second edition of this manuscript will be considered if sufficient new material is located. Naturally, additions and corrections are welcomed.
