These excerpts were provided to me by Ruth (Mrs. John) Potter of Bow, Washington in 1978. It seems likely she is a descendant of the recipient.

The letter is by Julia Ann Madden from Liberty (probably Montour Co., then Columbia Co., PA) and dated "October 10th 18?6. (either a 4 or 7)" If this Julia Ann is the daughter of James Madden as I deduce, the letter must have been written 1846 since she was married by 1876.

Ruth states: "This letter was written to "Dear Cousin".
Addressed to Miss Margaret E. Madden, Melugins Grove Post Office Lee County, Illinois."

She further states: "I find that Melugins Grove was settled in 1843 and was active until 1873 when most of the business was moved to Compton, which is on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad."

From the Ruth Potter letter:
"In this letter she speaks of
..... David coming home ill.
..... Brother Daniel and family
..... William and Mary keeping house together
..... Joseph and wife
..... Uncle Philip and Aunt Mary
..... Uncle William caught foot in a threshing machine"

"She (Julia) also states:
..... A cousin of mine, one of Uncle David Vandines daughter married Mr. Pursel. They moved to Ohio last fall on th28 of September. they landed here on their way back to Muncey--
..... they was at Uncle John Everts all well except Uncle John----
..... JWH.D is living in Philadelphia---you may well know that nearly all my spare time is taken in riting to Willy-D.
..... He was present __ of June when Joseph was married."

End of excerpts from the letter of Julia Ann Madden.

If you read the will of James Madden Sr., you will see that his daughter, Julia Ann, married William DERR, probably the Willy-D referred to above.
James had sons David, William and Joseph.
In the 1850 census, Joseph has only a son, John age 2, which suggests a marriage 1846-7.
No Daniel is mentioned in the will of James but a Daniel Madden and family are living nearby in Liberty Twp. Montour Co., PA in 1850. They have a son, Daniel, born about 1845. A young Daniel, born about 1846, is in the James Madden household in the 1860 census, likely a grandson.
The will of Joseph Madden mentions both sons James and William (Uncle William?).
Hopefully, some of the names and locations mentioned in this letter will be clues to others in their search for relationships.

In notes on another page, of the Ruth Potter letter, she states:
Joseph Madden married Elizabeth Carnahan (no date) whose father was David Carnahan of PA and mother was Margaret Mann born Lancaster Co, died Columbia Co., PA. This information was taken from the "History of Lee Co., Illinois" apparently from a biography of Andrew J. Carnahan.

Apparently from a pedigree of Ruth Potter, I have a note:
Margaret Ellen Madden born 16 Aug 1828, married Johnathan Jefferson MELUGEN who was born 1825. It seems likely she was the one to whom Julia Ann Madden had written in 1846.
