After a post mortem of the remains, an inquest was held when the Jury after investigating the case returned the following verdict: "That deceased came to her death from the consequences of bruises inflicted on her person on the 9th of June , by her husband Peter Niland.

Mr Niland was arrested at Racine-the case investigated and he held to bail  in $500, to answer at the next Circuit Court to be held for this County.
