Directions to the cemetery: Stay on Highway 96 approximately 12 miles past Happy Camp.
After crossing Clear Creek, you go about another mile or so and there will be a road on your left going down to the river....take that and just follow it and it will take you to the cemetery which will be on the left.
Early in the 1850’s Ferry Point was a mining camp with a store, boarding house, dance hall and river ferry. Originally established by Richard Humphreys and his partner, Lewis Barnes. In 1857 they sold out to James Camp and John Titus. And later, ownership was by Robert Lee Southard, my GGrandpa. This is where he raised his family. There was a schoolhouse across the river where the Southard and Attebery (his Grandchildren) children attended. My Mom attended this school and she said that when they would go out and play, they would find old Indian beads all around. On this site also, was located the “family” cemetery. The grave of Susie Humphreys is the earliest here that we are aware of. All the graves have headstones and markers. Of Robert and Mary Southard’s 12 children, all are buried here except 3…Louise Southard Attebery is buried in Happy Camp, Jennie Southard Linderman drowned in the river 20 Feb 1956 and her body was never recovered and the youngest Elberta is still living in Yreka.
