John Schmidt was one of the city officials of the city of Sheboygan in 1893. In the spring of that year he was elected to the office of City Comptroller, succeeding Frank W. Margenau, who served two years, or one term.

Mr. Schmidt was born in the city of New York, June 18, 1854, and is a son of Jacob Schmidt, who emigrated to New York from Bavaria, Germany, before his marriage. He had served in the Bavarian army about twenty years. Soon after his arrival in the United States, he was married, and when the subject of this sketch was about three years old the family came to Sheboygan. The father died in Milwaukee, in 1881. The wife and mother survives her husband and is a resident of Sheboygan. Of their family of twelve children, several are now deceased.

The son, John, whose name heads his sketch, was reared and educated in the Evergreen City. Mr. Schmidt is especially noted for his skill as a musician. He possesses a natural gift for the art of music and has attained to considerable celebrity in that direction, being leader of a military band in Sheboygan.

Mr. Schmidt has been twice married, both times in the Chair City. The first wife died in that city, leaving one child, a son. His second marriage occurred May 24, 1888. Of this latter union three children have been born.

As has been said, Mr. Schmidt has spent nearly all of his life in Sheboygan. He is well known, and is a man who has the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens.
