Introduction
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following documents are an attempt to get as many of the descendants of Samuel Shipley and Keturah Sutton as I can in one place on the Web. It is a combination of my research on my family line as well as a lot of other researchers that were generous enough to send me what information they have on their families.
Most of the information I have tried to verify, but I am sure that the document contains some mistakes. If anyone fines a mistake please let me know and I will correct it on my next upload. Also if anyone has any more information on our line please let me know and I will post it on the website.
As is normal I have more information on my direct line than anything else. My family line is
Samuel Shipley, Christopher Shipley, Uriah Shipley, Sterling Davis Shipley, Calvin Ember Shipley, Samuel Charles Shipley and Calvin Isaac Shipley.
I have tried to make sure that living descendants are not included. If one is please let me know and I will delete it.
This document is a Family Tree Maker Genealogy Report with all of the information I have on the entries. It is in Generation sequence (Page 1 is Generations 1-4 and page 2 is Generations 5-7) and does not contain an Index or Surname list. Your can search it with a “Control F” or just read it. I have also uploaded the same data in a file that has an index and Surname list but would not be as easy to read. Depending on what you are looking far it may be easier to use it. It is a selection item on my Shipley Family Page.
I hope you enjoy the site and if you would leave us a comment we would appreciate it

No. 1
1. SAMUEL1 SHIPLEY was born Bet. 1750 - 1751 in Maryland, Annne Arundel
or Baltimore Co., and died 25 Feb 1839 in Monroe Co. Kentucky. He married KETURAH SUTTON 21 Oct 1784
in Saint James Parish Baltimore Co. Maryland, daughter of JOSEPH SUTTON and RUTH ADAMS. She was born Abt. 1757 in Probably Baltimore
Maryland.
Notes for SAMUEL SHIPLEY:
My History of
Samuel Shipley and Keturah Sutton
Of Maryland, Tennessee and Kentucky
The following document is a
summary of my research on Samuel Shipley and Keturah Sutton.
If you find any thing that
needs to be changed, please to let me know.
Remember that parts of
current Eastern Tennessee in the early years were also North Carolina,
Virginia, Land South Of The Ohio River and part of it was called the Sauabble
state because nobody could determine what belonged to what. When I state North
Carolina/Tennessee it is just a lazy way of putting things.
I feel that I have tied
Samuel Shipley and Keturah Sutton from their marriage in 1784 in Maryland to
their move to Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee in late 1784 to Sullivan
Co. Tennessee by 1793 to Knox Co. Tennessee in 1799 to Grainger Co. Tennessee
in about 1809 to Barren Co. Kentucky in about
1811-1812. Monroe Co.
Kentucky was created in 1820 from Barren Co.. Monroe Co. is where Samuel died
in 1839. The main thing I tried to prove is that there was only one adult
Samuel Shipley in Eastern Tennessee from 1784 to 1810. The only other Samuel
was Richard’s son born about 1785-87.
Most of my non-internet
research came from visiting the following;
State Archives in Nashville Tennessee.
The East Tennessee Historical Center in Knoxville Tennessee.
The Barren Co.
Kentucky Courthouse and library.
The Monroe County
Kentucky Courthouse and library.
The Allen Co.
Kentucky Courthouse and library and
The Clayton Genealogical library in Houston Texas.
I live in Texas so it was a
fun trip to Tennessee and Kentucky.
Well here goes
1750-52 Maryland. Samuel
was born in either Anne-Arundle or
Baltimore Co. Maryland. We get his age from the following statement. Samuel
stated in his Kentucky pension application in 1831 he was about 80 years old
and served in the Maryland line from June 3rd 1778 to March 27th 1779 in the company commanded by Capt. Miles.
This ties the Kentucky Samuel in 1831 back to this Maryland Samuel.
1752-1778 Maryland. I find
nothing conclusive on Samuel during this period. There are several deed
transactions and tax records but since there were three or more Samuels living
in the area it could be anyone of them.
1778 Maryland, Baltimore
Co.. Samuel signed the Oath of Allegiance. He stated that there were three
people with the same name. I think it was him, Samuel Sr. (of Richard2 of
Adam1) and Samuel Sr.’s son Samuel Jr.
1778 Maryland, June 3rd
1778 until March 27th 1779. Samuel was in the Revolutionary War. He was a
private in the Maryland Line. His company commander was Capt. Miles and his
regiment commander was Colonel Williams. Samuel was discharged near
Middlebrooks New Jersey. Samuel signed up for a three year term and I wonder
why he was discharged after 9 months? I found several references in Maryland
Historical documents about him being in the military.
1779 New Jersey, March
27th. Samuel was discharged from the military.
1783 Maryland. Tax records
showed one Samuel living in Anne-Arundle Co. and another one in Baltimore Co..
Samuel Sr. died in 1780 so I think that one of the above, probably the one in
Anne-Arundle was my Samuel and the other was Samuel Jr. of Samuel Sr. This is
just a guess. My Samuel showed to own no property at that time.
1784 July 31st Samuel bought 490 acres of land in
Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee.
1784 October 21st Samuel married Keturah Sutton daughter of
Joseph Sutton. This was listed in the Saint James Parish, Baltimore Co.
records.
1784 -1786 Samuel bought 200 more acres of land in Washington Co. North
Carolina/Tennessee. The indenture date was left off the deed so the only date
in the deed is where Samuel promised to pay off the rest of the note by November 13th 1789. He paid taxes on both
properties in 1787 so he must have bought it before 1787. The tax list showed
two white poles. Edward Shipley and Adam Shipley were witnesses to the
transaction. (brothers, cousins?)
Note
It seems that Samuel bought land in Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee
in 1784 and 1784-1786. He also paid taxes there in 1787. Samuel also got
married in Maryland in 1784 and has
three children listed in Saint James Parish Register as born or baptized in
1785-86-88. I do not have an obvious answer to the above except the deeds are
signed by Samuel and the Saint James records could have been submitted by
Keturah’s father who was a member of the same Parish, or anyone else. If anyone
can answer the above for sure I would appreciate it. As you will see later in
the document there is a lot of evidence I believe showing that the above Samuel
is the same person.
1785 North
Carolina/Tennessee or Maryland. Samuel and Keturah had a son named Christopher
Shipley as listed in the Saint James Parish Register in Baltimore Co. Maryland.
He married Elizabeth Rutherford in 1811 in Knox Co. Tennessee. He is my direct
line.
1786 North
Carolina/Tennessee or Maryland. Samuel and Keturah had a son named Thomas as
listed in the Saint James Parish Register in Baltimore Co. Maryland. He married
Lucinda Edington in 1813 in Knox Co. Tennessee.
1787 North
Carolina/Tennessee. Samuel paid taxes
on 700 acres of land. This was both
his 200 and 490 acres of land purchases combined. This tax list shows
Samuel must have purchased the 200 acres of land before 1787. The list also
showed two white poles.
1788 North Carolina/Tennessee or Maryland. The Shipley’s of
Maryland Book states that a Samuel Shipley was baptized on April 25th 1788.It
states that his parents were Samuel and Keturah Shipley. This just happens to
be the same date that the Saint James Parish register in Baltimore Co. Maryland
lists as the birth date of Benjamin Shipley born to Samuel and Keturah Shipley.
I think someone is wrong, probably the Shipley’s of Maryland Book. So far the
above on young Samuel is all I have so I am not sure of anything on him or
Benjamin.
1788 North Carolina/Tennessee or Maryland. Samuel and ?????? had a son named Benjamin Shipley as listed in
the Saint James Parish Register in Baltimore Co. Maryland. If my theory about
Samuel moving to Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee in 1784 is correct
then Benjamin would have been born in Tennessee. In the 1850 census in Sullivan
Co. Tennessee I find a Benjamin Shipley married to Hannah. Benjamin showed to
be born in 1788 in Tennessee. It is possible that this Benjamin could be Samuel
and Keturah’s son .
1789 North
Carolina/Tennessee. Samuel must have paid off the 200 acres of land he
purchased and agreed to pay the balance in 1789 because he still had it in 1790.
1789 Samuel had jury duty
in Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee
1790 Samuel had jury duty
in Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee
1790 August 21st Samuel
sold his two hundred acres of land in Washington Co. to Thomas Shipley. This
transaction was witnessed by Edward and Adam Shipley. Now we have the three
more Shipley’s connected again. (brothers cousins?)
1790-1793. I find no proof
of where he lived, but one item may be a hint of where he might have been. In
1792 a law suit was filed against Samuel in Knox Co. Tennessee for non-payment
of a debt. The document was very confusing
and almost unreadable. I do know the case was dismissed . It seemed that
they could not find Samuel or something was improper on the document. Also the
person who filed the suit was named Alexander Cavitt and he lived Sullivan Co.
Tennessee. Alexander Cavitt also sold land to Conrad Shipley in Sullivan Co.
(Shipley‘s ferry). I am not sure if Samuel lived in Knox Co. at that time or
not.
1790-1791 Tennessee. Samuel
and Keturah had a daughter named Ruth Shipley who later married Joshua Brown.
Note
1790 Maryland Census. After
all of this talk of three known Samuels in Baltimore or Anne-Arundle County Maryland and one dying in 1780 leaving two
and my Samuel moving to North Carolina/Tennessee leaving one. The 1790 Maryland
Census shows two Samuels still living in Maryland each having teenage children.
When you have no answer just ignore it and hope for the best..
1793 August 19th
Sullivan Co. Tennessee. Samuel
purchased 200 acres of land. It had a ferry on it and was on the Holsten
River.
1795 Tennessee. Samuel and
Keturah had a son named Reuben Shipley. He married Nancy Bailey.
1796 Samuel paid taxes on
his 200 acres of land in Sullivan Co.
1797 Samuel paid taxes on
his 200 acres of land in Sullivan Co.
1799 July 8th Knox Co.
Tennessee. Samuel purchased 300 acres
of land on Roseberry Creek. The deed stated that the land was also know as The
Privy Spring.
1799 Tennessee, Sullivan
Co. September 27th. Samuel sold his 200 acres of land to Phillip Snapp. The
deed stated that Samuel was lately of Sullivan Co. He had just moved to Knox
Co. Tennessee.
1799 Tennessee Samuel and Keturah
had a daughter named Keturah Shipley.
She married Thomas Biggers later in Kentucky.
1801 Tennessee, Knox Co..
Samuel was sued for non-payment of a debt. He lost the case. One of many. (Must be of my line)
1801-1802 Tennessee. Samuel
and Keturah had a daughter named Prudence Shipley. She married Fleming Smith
Page in Kentucky. This was after the death of Dorcus Shipley Page who married
Fleming earlier.
1802 Tennessee, Knox Co..
Samuel was sued for non-payment of a debt. He also lost that case.
Note
1802 August 18th Samuel
(the deed states Samuel Shipley of Knox Co. Tennessee) sold the 490 acres of
property he purchased in Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee on July 31st
1784. He sold the land to an Edward Shipley of Grainger Co. Tennessee. This was
probably the same Edward who witnessed his other Washington Co. Transactions.
This is an important find
because it ties this Samuel from Washington Co. to Sullivan Co. to Knox Co.
The purchase was witnessed
by N. Shipley (Probably Nathan the possible son of Benjamin Shipley and Kitty
Hawks). Was he a younger brother of Samuel, Edward, Adam and Thomas???
1803 Tennessee, Knox Co..
Samuel paid taxes on his Roseberry Creek property.
1803 Tennessee, Knox Co..
Samuel is sued for non-payment of a debt. As usual he lost the suit. The guy
had no luck.
1803 Tennessee, Knox Co..
Samuel and Keturah had a daughter named Dorcus S. Shipley. She married Fleming
S. Page in Kentucky.
1804 Tennessee Knox Co..
Samuel paid taxes on his Roseberry Creek property.
1804 Tennessee, Knox Co..
Samuel was sued for non-payment of a debt. He lost again!! I would change
lawyers!
1805 Tennessee, Knox Co.
January 18th Samuel sold his Roseberry
Creek property. This is the last time I find Samuel owning property anywhere.
He was about 55 years old and I thought it was strange.
1806 Tennessee Knox Co..
Samuel was sued for non-payment of a
debt. Same old story he lost.
1806 Tennessee Knox Co..
Samuel and Keturah had their last child Asa Shipley. He married Rosannah Bean in
Washington Co. Tennessee.
1809 Tennessee Grainger
Co.. Can you believe it Samuel sued a William Robertson for something. Of course he lost the case.
The guy just cannot catch a break.
1810 Tennessee Grainger
Co.. Surprise William Robertson sued Samuel and as usual Samuel lost the case.
1810 Tennessee Knox Co..
Samuel and his son Christopher were sued for non-payment of a debt. Is it like
father like son. Neither one showed up for the hearing so of course they lost
the case. I think Samuel was in Grainger Co., but Christopher married
Elizabeth Rutherford in 1811 in Knox
Co.. so he must have still been there.
Note
The above law suit places
Samuel with his son Christopher in 1810. Also in 1821 Christopher and his
brother Thomas are involved in a lawsuit in Knox Co. Tennessee. I believe
between the two lawsuits and the two sons marriage in Knox Co. in 1811 and 1813
show that they are part of Samuels and Keturah’s family. I find no other Shipley’s listed in Knox Co.
Tennessee earlier or later.
1813 Kentucky, Barren Co..
Samuel paid taxes but did not show to own land.
Note
It seems strange that Samuel would leave Tennessee where he
had two or more adult children and move to Kentucky with at least four minor
children unless he had relatives in Barren Co. Kentucky. There was a small
group of Shipley’s living in Barren Co.
at the time. They were Robert Shipley Sr., Robert Shipley Jr., Joseph Shipley
(maybe adult son of Samuel), Nathaniel Shipley, George Shipley and William
Shipley. (sons, brothers or cousins?) I think there has to be a family
connection there and I hope someone can prove it. I have not so far.
1814 Kentucky, Barren Co..
Samuel paid taxes but did not show to own land.
1817 Kentucky, Barren Co.. Samuel signed a document giving
his son Joseph permission to act as his agent in the settlement of the estate
of Joseph Sutton of Maryland. Joseph
Sutton was Samuels’s wife Keturah’s father.
1820 Kentucky Monroe Co.
(Allen and Monroe Counties were formed from Barren Co. so the Shipley’s living
there did not move, the county lines did.) Anyway Samuel showed up in the 1820
Monroe Co. census and still had 4 children living with him. They were Dorcus,
Prudence, Keturah and Asa. His daughter Ruth Shipley Brown lived next door, or
maybe Samuel and children were living with Joshua and Ruth Shipley Brown.
1821-1829 I find nothing on
Samuel during these years. It may be because the Monroe Co. courthouse burned
about 1860 and most documents were lost.
It could be that Samuel after his children were gone and his wife was
dead moved back to where his brothers or other children lived. Samuel was
between 70 and 78 years old. Maybe someday I will locate him.
1830 Kentucky ,Monroe Co..
Samuel paid taxes but did not show to own land.
1830 Kentucky, Monroe Co..
Samuel showed to be living with his son Reuben in the 1830 Monroe Co. Census.
Note
1831 Kentucky, Monroe Co..
Samuel applied for and began receiving pension benefits from the Revolutionary War.
He stated he was the Samuel who served with
Capt. Miles in the Maryland line.
This document ties Samuel
back to Baltimore Co. Maryland and with the other ties listed above I think it
pretty well proves that all of the above Samuels are in fact one Samuel.
1831-1839 I have no
information on Samuel. The Monroe Co. Courthouse burned about 1860 and most
documents were lost. What a shame.
1839 Monroe Co. Kentucky.
Samuel died at the age of about 89. This showed up in his pension history. He
was the longest living person in my direct line.. According to the "Page
Family History" the administrator to Samuels estate was Fleming Smith
Page, husband of first Dorcus Shipley and after her death her sister Prudence
Shipley. Both were daughters of Samuel.
Samuel and Keturah’s children were as follows:

Questions
Samuel married Keturah at
the age of 34. That seems late for a first marriage. I think that Samuel was
married before and that might account for several children that I can find no
information on. It is just another guess with no proof.
I think that Joseph Shipley
a son of Samuel may have had a wife
named Jean or Jane McCracken. If I am right then Joseph was born between 1765
and 1784 (1810 Barren Co. Kentucky Census one male 26-45) and he could not be
Keturah’s son. This is just a guess and I hope someone has an answer on Joseph.
There was another Joseph in
the Campbell Co. Kentucky 1850 census who would have been born in 1790, but he
said he was born in Virginia. I cannot place where Samuel was during that time
period so it is possible this Joseph was Samuel’s and Keturah’s.
Benjamin Shipley married to
a Hannah living in Sullivan Co. Tennessee is a question mark. According to the
1850 census he was born in Tennessee in 1788. Since no one else claims him in
their family line I wonder if he is Samuel and Keturah’s son. I still think
that Samuel moved to Washington Co. North Carolina/Tennessee in about 1784 and
had all of his children there.
Any comments you have or
mistakes that you see would be helpful.

Notes for KETURAH SUTTON:
BIOGRAPHY
Daughter of Joseph Sutton
b. 1726 Balt. Co. Md. (m - 5-1-1748 Balt.
Co. Md) and Ruth Adams of
Md. their other children listed were Henry
b. 1756 & Thomas b. ?
As is normal with early
females you normally find out very little about them.
Children of SAMUEL SHIPLEY and KETURAH SUTTON are:
i. JOSEPH2 SHIPLEY.
Notes for JOSEPH SHIPLEY:
Joseph is listed in a
document filed in Barren Co. Kentucky by his father Samuel stating that his
beloved son Joseph was to act as his attorney in the settlement of the death benefits
of his wife Keturah's fathers estate in Maryland. Her father was named Joseph
Sutton and the date on the document was dated Aug of 1816.
Byond the above document I
have no proof that Joseph ever existed. Listed below is a couple of
possibilities.
A Joseph Shipley showed up
in the 1808 tax records of Barren Co. Kentucky.
A Joseph shows to be in the
1810 Barron Co Kentucky census. He and his wife show to be between 26
and 45 years of age, with
one boy under 10 and 3 girls under 10. His wife would have been named Jane
McCracken and they lived next door to her brother James McCracken.
In the 1820 census the above
Joseph seems to have died . His wife Jane is listed along with several
Children. Also this Joseph paid taxes on his property 1808 thru 1819 and then
he disappears.
1808 Joseph Shipley July 21 120 acres on Walnut Creek.
1812 Joseph shipley and wife (Jean or Jane) joined Concord Baptist
Church Barren Co. 1812-1819
1814 Joseph Shipley in Benedict Co. tax District Barren Co.
1815 Joseph was issued a land grant in 1815 for 200, but never
paid taxes on more than 124 acres.
1815 Joseph was taxed with no land in Allen Co. Kentucky
1816 Joseph was taxe on 200 acres of land in Allen Co.
1816 he paid taxes on 124 acres,
1817 for 50 acres and Nathaniel Shipley paid taxes on 25
additional acres of Joseph's land. Allen Co
1819 Joseph paid taxes on 45 acres and Nathaniel on 20 acres.
Allen Co.
1820 Jane his wife paid taxes on 50 acres and Nathaniel on the 25
acres. Allen Co.
1822 Jane paid taxes on 40 acres and Nathaniel on 25 acres. Allen
Co.
1823 James (Probably Jane a misprint) paid taxes on 40 acres and
Nathaniel on the 25 acres. Allen Co.
1824 It was back to Jane and Nathaniel on 50 acres and 25 acres.
Allen Co.
I do not think that this is
the right Joseph, but who knows.
If this is the right Joseph
and he is 26 or more and Samuel and Keturah were married in Mar.1784 and he was born in 1784 or earlier. It does
not compute. Could Samuel have had an earlier wife?
A Joseph Shipley is in the
Campbell Co. Ky 1850 census. In it he states he is 60 years old and was born in
Va. I cannot place Samuel from 1790-1793 so he might have been in Virginia. The
area that Samuel lived in in late 1793 was sometimes called the Squabble State
because Tennessee, North Carolina
and Virginia claimed it for
years. So it could be him.
ii. SUSAN SHIPLEY, b. Kentucky; d. Kentucky.
Notes for SUSAN SHIPLEY:
I have found nothing on this
Susan. I do know her brother Rueben named one of his children Susan so it could
be her. Samuel had a daughter named
Dorcus S. Shipley. I think that this was Dorcus Susan
Shipley.
I have given her a birth and
death place of Kentucky for map purposed
iii. WILLIAM SHIPLEY, b. 1786, Anne Arundle Maryland.
Notes for WILLIAM SHIPLEY:
Everything is speculation on
William. I have no proof that he ever existed. The Shipley's of Maryland book
makes a mess of our Samuel and you cannot believe everything they say.
Ancestry,com listed the
following
Mcguire, Hannah married
Shipley, William on 13 Apr 1811 in Barren County, Kentucky.
Davidson, Rachel married
Shipley, William on 19 Nov 1807 in Barren County, Kentucky.
compare the kids in an 1850
census and where they were born.
2. iv. CHRISTOPHER SHIPLEY, b. 14 Aug 1785, Washington Co. North Carolina/later
Tennessee; d. 30 May 1830, McMinn Co. Tennessee.
v. THOMAS SHIPLEY, b. 30 Dec 1786; m. LUCINDA EDINGTON, 1813,
Knox Co. Tennessee.
Notes for THOMAS SHIPLEY:
Genforum-Debbie Jackson
Saint James Parish in
Baltimore Co. Maryland lists Thomas as being born in Baltimore Co. Maryland and
his parents were Samuel and Keturah Shipley.
Also the Shipleys of
Maryland lists Thomas as being born December 30th 1786.
So far the only Thomas I
find that fits our family is the one Marrying Lucinda Edington in 1813 in Knox
Co. Tennessee.
I also found a newspaper
clipping in the Knoxville Register in 1819 about a Thomas Shipley selling a one
half acre lot in Knoxville.
I found where a Thomas
Shipley died in Grainger Co. Tennessee in 1835. I havn't checked it out yet.
This Thomas was in the 1830
census also.
A James Eddington was born in Knox Co. Tenessee 5027-1827. Maybe
her family.
Their are a lot of Edingtons
in Knox county about the time our family was there and so I think Something
will showup soon
vi. SAMUEL SHIPLEY, b. Abt. Sep 1788, Baltimore Co. Maryland; d. 1827,

Notes for CHRISTOPHER SHIPLEY:
BIOGRAPHY
Christopher is the last of
our direct line discussed in the Shipley's of Maryland Book (1938 Edition) and
it only gives his parents name and his date of birth.
Saint James Parish
Baltimore Co. Maryland Register from 1787 to 1815. The Register states that
Shipley, Christopher, b. to Samuel and Keturah, 8/14/1785.
If we use the above records as Christophers place of birth we
may be wrong. Christopher's father Samuel purchased land in Washington Co.
North Carolina which later became Washington Co. Tennessee. The dates of the
land purchases were 1784 and 1784-1786. In 1787 Samuel paid taxes on the lands
and showed two white poles (white adult males) living there. When he purchased
the land he stated he was a resident of Washington Co. N.C. on both purchases.
From the deed and tax records I believe Samuel was living in Washington Co.from
late 1784 until about 1790-91.
The rest I found from some
of our family records and other geneological research areas. Mostly in the
Eastern Tennessee Research facility in Knox County Tennessee.
Saint James Parish in Baltimore Co. Maryland states that Samuel
and Keturah Shipley had the following children. CHRISTOPHER (1785),
Thomas(1786), Benjamin(1788).
1785-1807. I can find
nothing on Christopher while he was living at home.
1807 Knox Co.
Tennessee. Christopher paid taxes on 100
acres of land. I found no deed records of Christopher buying or selling land in
Knox Co. Tennessee.
1810 Knox Co.
Tennessee. Christopher and his father
Samuel were sued in Knox County Tennessee for non payment of a debt. This

April 20th. Christopher married Betsy (Elizabeth) Rutherford in Knox Co.
Tennessee. The bond for the marriage was agreed on and signed by Christopher
Shipley and John Rutherford.

1830 McMinn Co. Tennessee
May 30th. Christopher signed his last
will and testiment and it was probated on June 7th 1830. This was before the
1830 Tennessee Census so only Elizabeth and her family were shown.
The Witnesses and Executer
to his will were the following men who lived next to them.
One was the brother of
Elizabeth, James Rutherford
The other two were friends
or family. James Regan and Philip Frye.
Also Edward Rutherford
lived next to them and was some relation to Elizabeth
I have a copy of the will
and will transcribe and list it later.
This is all I have on
Christopher at this time, but look under his wife Elizabeth for history and
census records after his death in 1830.
Also in notes from another
researcher concerning Rutherford's --- Christopher
Shipley's nephew
Randolph Rutherford sold
out in McMinn Co. Tn. in 1851 and moved to
Ozark, Mo. or Douglas Co.
Mo. This is where Christophers's son and grandson, Uriah and Sterling Shipley
moved to in the early 1850s.
Notes for ELIZABETH(BETSY) RUTHERFORD:
Elizabeth
(Betsy) Rutherford
Very little is known about
Elizabeth's life except through census records. This is normal as little is
ever known of the colonial and pioneer women. Here are the few facts I have
gathered about our Elizabeth.
She was the daughter of
Randolph Rutherford born .
abt 1758 Augusta Co. Virginia and died
Jan 1841
in Wythe Co. Virginia.
His wifed Mary born abt 1782.
Elizabeth is listed on
1830, 1840, 1860 Census.

If anyone wants more
information on the Rutherfords look in almost any large Genealogy library and
there are three large volumes on the Rutherfords. I found one in the Clayton Genealogy
Lib. in Houston, Texas and one in The History Center in Knox Co. Tennessee.
It is interesting to note
that a researcher stated that a Betsy
Rutherford was listed as a member of the Cherokee Nation.
This is the second
possibility of our being a part of the Cherokee Nation, But we still do not
have any proof. Oh well.

Notes for NEHEMIAH SHIPLEY:
I found in an LDS entry
where a Nehemiah Shipley Married an Emilene Scroggins in 1856 in Rhea Co.
Tennessee. It stated that Nehemiah died in 1868.
In the settlement of his mother
Elizabeth's estate it was stated he was deceased.
I found a Emilene Shipley as
part of the settlement of Christopher Shipleys will in1869-1870. That is all I
have on Emilene.
I found an N. Shipley in 1850 McMinn Co. Tennessee Census
single male age 25.
He was just above an E.
Shipley single male 31.
Next was John Smith and his

N. Shipley's age is right
for Nehemiah so I feel sure it is him.

3. BENJAMIN2 SHIPLEY (SAMUEL1) was born 25 Apr 1788 in Tennessee. He married HANNAH UNKNOWN.
Notes for BENJAMIN SHIPLEY:
The following document is a
compilation of facts, deduction, and some just plain guesses as to who this
Benjamin Shipley really is. I think I am right on it but because of several
Benjamins in Tennessee and some conflicting and or missing information it
cannot be proven. The tax records I have compiled show that their were only
three Benjamins in Washington Co. from about 1816 until 1836. Of those three
one sold his land and left around 1825 or so. That left only two. Thanks to the
tax records showing that because of two Benjamins in the county they showed one
as 'Benjamin of James' and the other as 'Benjamin of Samuel'. The 'Benjamin of
Samuel' paid his taxes on 40 acres of land it so allowed me to identify
our 'Benjamin of Samuel' for a lot of years in Washington County. It
looks like our Benjamin moved to Sullivan Co. by 1840 as per census records.
From here the tax and deed records alone with other information get really confusing. I will discuss the confusion as
they show up later on in this document.
I found a Benjamin Shipley
born to a Samuel and ??? in the Saint James Protestant Episcople Parish on
April 25,1788. This is the same place that I found Christopher and Thomas, his
brothers. Since both Samuel and his wife Keturah were living in Washington Co.
Tn by this time. I believe he was born in Tennessee as he states in his 1850
census record.
I think the above is the
same Benjamin I found in the 1850 Sullivan Co. Census married to a Hannah.
Timeline History
1788 April 25th Benjamin Shipley was born in
Washington Co. N.C., which later became
Tennessee.
1788- 1815 Benjamin lived
with his family. Around 1810 or 1812 Benjamins father Samuel moved to Grainger
Co. Tennessee for a year or so. After that he moved to Barron Co. Kentucky. I
find no record of Benjamin living in Barron Co. so I think he probably stayed
in Grainger Co. and moved to Washington Co. by 1815. Most of the Tennessee
Census from 1800 to 1820 is lost so it is no help.
1816 Benjamin paid taxes in
Washington Co. Tennessee. He had no land
1818 Benjamin paid taxes in
Washington Co. Tennessee. He had no land
1818 Benjamin paid taxes in

Even though the Benjamin
below looks like the same Benjamin as above, I cannot be sure. The change in
acres (40 to 44) that he is paying
taxes on makes you wonder. Also in 1840 a Benjamin shows up in the 1840
Sullivan Co. Tn. census that is probably our 'Benjamin of Samuel'. Also the
same for 1850. It is possible that our Benjamin moved to Sullivan Co. around
1839 and the one Benjamin left in Washington Co. is the 'Benjamin of James'.
Also the 'Benjamin of James' later lived and died in Sullivan Co.

Here is a guess. I believe
that our 'Benjamin of Samuel' in poor health and living in Sullivan Co. finally
sold his 40 acres of land to Mary Davidson. The deed states or at least implies
that Mary and her family had been living on this 40 acres for some time without
owning it. This opinion answers why I did not find earlier where Benjamin sold
his land.
Benjamin must have died
between 1850 and 1860 as he did not show up on the 1860 census.

Sep 1862 in West Fork, Washington Co. Arkansas.
Notes for RUTH SHIPLEY:
From the information I have garthered it seems that Ruth
Shipley was born in Tennessee (probably Knox Co.). She then moved from
Tennessee to Barren Co. Kentucky with her father Samuel and several other
children. (Reuben, Dorcus, Prudence, Keturah etc.). She married Joshua Brown in
Barren Co. Kentucky in Jan of 1817. In the 1820 Monroe Co. Census (in 1820
Monroe was created from a part of Barren Co.) Johua Brown and Ruth are living
next door to her father Samuel Shipley. Sometime between 1820 and 1830 Joshua
and Ruth moved back to McMinn Co. Tennessee where several of her brothers and
other relatives lived. The next I find of them are in the Washington Co.
Arkansas census for 1860.
It states that Joshua was
65, a farmer and born in Tn. Ruth was
70 and born in Tn. Ruth died sometime after 1860 and Joshua ied in 1862.

which part of it became Monroe Co. Kentucky. Samuel was on the Barren Co. tax
roles from 1813-1814. He live in
Kentucly to abt 1840 and then moved to Marshall Co. Illinois before 1850. He

6. KETURAH2 SHIPLEY (SAMUEL1) was born Abt. 1799 in Tennessee, and died Bet. 1842 -
1850 in Monroe County, Kentucky. She
married THOMAS BIGGERS. He was born
Abt. 1784 in Virginia.
Notes for KETURAH SHIPLEY:
Keturah Shipley was born abt 1799-1801 in Tennessee she moved
along with her father Samuel and several other children to Barren/Monroe Co.
Kentucky in about 1810. While not much is known about her we do know that she
married a Thomas Biggers in Monroe Co. Ky.and had 7 children all listed on this
family page. She along with her sister Prudence in 1838-40 were Members of the
Mill Creek Baptist Church and later in 1841 became Charter menbers of the
"Skaggs Creek Baptist Church" in Tompkinsville, Monroe Co.
Kentucky. Keturah lived the rest of her
life in Monroe Co. close to her sisters.
She died somtime between 1842 and 1850 because in 1850 Thomas had a
younger wife named Catherine. This was
a time of strife in the area because of the war of 1812 and all of the debates
over slavery which led up to the Civil War in 1860. My sources tell that most
of the people in Monroe Co. were for the Union and against Slavery. If you were
in Kentucky and a Confederate, after the war you were not to welcome and a lot
of them moved on to Tennessee, Arkansas and Mo.
Some guess work must be used to determine that Thomas Biggers
was Keturah's husband. The main proof is that every other child of his was
named after Keturah or one of her siblings. Her sister Prudence lived three
houses down from Thomas in the 1850 census. Prudence her sister in the 1860
census was living with Owen Biggers, Keturah's son. The above leads me to be
very sure that Thomas Biggers was Keturah's husband until her death. At this time no other evidence exists.
The 1830 Monroe Co. census
for the Thomas Biggers family showed;
1 Male age 5 to 9
Owen
1 Male age 40-49 Thomas father
3 Females age 0-4 Ruth, martha and Mary daughters
1 Female age 5-9 Keturah
daughter
1 Female age 30-39
Keturah mother
The 1840 Monroe Co. census
for the Thomas Biggers family showed;
1 Male age 0-4 Thomas son
1 Male age 15-19 Owen
1 Male age 50-59
Thomas father
1 Female age 0-4 Prudence
1 Female age 5-9 Parmelia
3 Females age 10-14 Ruth, martha and Mary
1 Female age 15-19
Keturah daughter
1 Female age 30-39
Ketutah mother
The 1850 Monroe Co. Census
for the Thomas Biggers family showed;
Thomas Biggers age 56 born
in Va.
Catherine Biggers age 43 born
in Tn.
The children were
Keturah age 26 -

Owen age 25
Ruth age 23 - Keturah's sister's name.

Information from the History and Geanology of the Robert and

Fleming S. Page, son of John Page, was born on Feb 14 1803 in
Cumberland Co. Kentucky, and died on June 14 1857 in Monroe Co. Kentucky. He
married first Dorcus Shipley on September 5 1822 in Monroe Co. Kentucky. She
was born on 14 March 1803 in Kentucky and died April 20, 1842 in Monroe Co Kentucky.
She was the daughter of Samuel Shipley of Maryland. He married second her
sister Prudence T. Shipley on November 8 1842 in Monroe Co. Kentucky. Prudence
died on May 12 1864 in Monroe Co. Kentucky and is bured in Gregory Cementery
Near Tompkinsville, Monroe Co. Kentucky.
Prudence was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church from
1838 to 1841 when she and others partitioned the church to aid in the formation
of the Skaggs Creek Babtist Church also in Monroe Co. I have an article from
the a book of the Monroe Co. History where she and her sister Keturah along
with others were charter members of the Skaggs Creek Baptist Church in 1841. In
1840 Prudence was living with her sister and brother-in-law Fleming Page.
Probably Dorcus her sister was in poor health and died two years later in 1842.
About six months later Prudence married Fleming and helped raise her sisters children.
The only thing that seems
odd is that in 1860 after Fleming had died Prudence instead of living with one
of her step-children was living with her other sister Keturah's oldest son and
his family. Maybe she did not get along with her step children??

He married ROSANNAH BEAN Abt. 1841 in Tennessee. She was born Abt. 1806 in Tennessee, and died Aft. 1880 in
Washington Co. Tennessee.
Notes for ASA SHIPLEY:
According to the 1860 Census
Asa was born in Knox Co. Tennessee in 1806. He would have moved to
Kentucky with his father Samuel and other siblings around 1810-1813. By 1830 he
had moved back to Washington Co. Tennessee. The 1820 to 1829 tax records are
incomplete or unavailable so the first proof I have of Asa is in the 1830 tax
records. He married his wife Rosannah in about 1824-1825. I find him living the
rest of his life in Washington Co. Tennessee. He died between 1860 and 1870 and
is buried in the Shipley Cementery in Washington Co.. His wife lived for at
least 10 years more.
I have no proof that this Asa is our Asa but the time and
place of birth and his life in Tennessee point toward it a lot.
In the Tennessee Washington
Co. 1840 Census I found the following;
Asa Shipley
1 male under 5
1 male 30 to 40 (This would
be Asa)
1 Female under 5
2 female 5 to 10
2 female 10 to 15

Some Notes on The Life
Of Our Uriah H. Shipley and his wives
Ann Davis and Mary H. Hicks
1810-1812 Knox Co. Tennessee.
Uriah was born (as recorded on his tombstone June 10 1810). The problem with
the above date is that according to Tennessee records his parents were married
in 1811. I guess it is possible. He
was the first born of Christopher Shipley and Elizabeth Rutherford.
1812-1829 During this time
it seems that Christopher and Elizabeth Shipley and family live in first Knox
Co. Tennessee until maybe 1820 or so. At that time they moved into Cherokee
Indian territory. I think that this later became Bradley County Tennessee.
1929-1830 Uriah and Ann
Davis get married. One source states that family tradition was that Ann was a
full blood Cherokee Indian. This source also states that during the first 10 or
12 years of their marriage they spent living in the Ocoee Indian district in
Tennessee. Bradley Co was formed from this district and they are listed as
among the first settlers of the Eureka Community. Uriah being a Lay Minister in
the Methodist Episcopal Church helped form the Euraka Academy, a church school
for the Indian children. During the 1840s the family moved back to McMinn Co.

A few intersting footnotes
on Uriah.
I found a letter that
was sent to the State of Tennessee in 1839 from Bradley Co. asking for relief
from a newly formed school district that was trying to take away some land or
make them pay more than they thought they should. Uriah and a number other people
signed the petition. From what I could
tell it was land that Uriah and other people had settled on and it was Indian
land. After the the government moved the Indians to Oklahoma they set up a
school district giving all of the land to the school districtand Uriah and
others were trying to not lose their land. The Cherokee Indian move was a sad
footnote in American History and was called "The Cherokee Trail Of
Tears" . Read about it sometime. We were not very nice to the Cherokee
Indians.
He was an Episcopal
Methodist Minister most of his life and records show that he performed
marriages where ever he lived.
We know that Uriahs Shipley's daughter Louisa married Isaac Franks
and Samuel Charles Shipley married Mary
Franks. This is one of two places where the Shipley's and Frank's
inter-married. There was a letter stating that we might have another Franks in
our Ancestry but some information from one of our Second cousins Trudy Shipley
Harper cleared that up. It was a stepson of Sterling Davis Shipley talking
about Uriah.
It is interesting to note
that there were few if any schools in the area where Uriah grew up, but he
learned to read and write quite well it seems.
Listed below are notes from
Trudy Shipley Harper, Vicki Karmann and Sybil Shipley Jobe. They repeat some of
my above comments but, I think they are interesting just the same.
From Vickie in ref. to note of Sybil Shipley Jobe. Uriah
married a Mary
Hicks sometime between 1863
& 1865 (see 1870 census notes Mary H. 45
b. Ala) and that they had
no children.
There were no schools in
the area where Uriah lived but Uriah learned
to read and write and had a
fair education. He later became a lay
minister in the Episcopal
Methodist Church South and the Methodist
Protestant Church.
Uriah's oldest son Sterling
moved to Ark. in the early 1850's and was
in Douglas Co. Mo. by 1857.
By 1859 Uriah was in Douglas Co. He bought
40 acres of land (SW SE of
S9 twp 25 R 16) from the United States for
$40.00 on Nov. 25, 1859. On
the 29 Nov. 1865 Uriah applied for
homestead land. He was
issued Homestead Certificates No396... This
land is located on Rippee
Creek in the Brown Twp.
They moved to Springfield,
Conway Co. Ark. sometime in 1871. Land
records dated Nov. 4, 1871
show that he bought land there.
On Jan. 26 1872 Uriah
registered his credentials as an Ordained Deacon
in the Methodist Protestant
Church (Deed Book L page 261)
Uriah paid taxes in Conway
Co. Ark. in the years of 1874, 1877, 1879.
His wife paid them from
1884-1903. The last record of Uriah in Conway
Co. Ark. is dated Sept. 29,
1880. It is a promissory note. William M.
Shipley is also listed.
1880 Census Conway Co. ark.
taken June 11, 1880. They were in Union

70, hers as 64 - his occupation is listed as
farmer. Mary is listed

Notes for MARY LOUISA SHIPLEY:
BIOGRAPHY
Louisa married Issac Lemuel
Franks. This is the first established time
that the Shipleys and Franks
inter married. The second and later was
Mary Franks and Samuel
Charles Shipley.
Louisa's daughter Cynthia
Mary Ann Franks (my grandmother) married
Calvin E. Shipley's son
Samuel Charles (my grandfather) .
Louisa and Isacc lived in
Alabama prior to living in Ark. They came to
Texas from Ark. Dec. 14 1888
and Jan 1889. Louisa was pregnant and
sick at the time and came by
train the with smaller children with her Bro-in-law,
Jerry (Jeremiah),
Accompaning her. Isacc came by wagon with older
children.
There was a letter dated 4
Jan 1880 by W.A. Hubbird to Isaac Lemuel
Franks stating that his
grandpa was a brother to Thomas Shipley.
He
does not give his grandpa's
name but this Thomas Shipley might be a
relation to Louisa
Shipley. We do know that Isaac and
Louisa's
daughter, Mary, married
Samuel Charles Shipley and Charles's father
was named Calvin and was a
cousin to Louisa Shipley Franks. It is
believed that Mary Franks
and Charles Shipley (her husb) were third
cousins.
The answer to the above
letter came from Trudy Shipley Harper.
Sterling D. Shipley's 2nd
wife. was Charlotte Hubbard. Charlotte had a
son by her first
husband whose name was Warren. b. 1857.
Sterling and
Charlotte married in Sept.
of 1860. The grandfather W. A. (Warren) is
speaking of is Sterling's
father Uriah (which was probably the only
grandfather Warren Hubbard
knew). Uriah had a brother named Thomas C.
Shipley who was married to
Nancy Jane Wattenbarger. So the answer is
we do not have another
Franks marriage in the family line.
All of Louisa's children and
decendents are in the Franks family
records.

Am looking for more
information on R. Shipley who married Milly (Millie). In 1850 TN census listed
with children Amanda (possibly Lamanda) 14, Delila 12, Sarah 10, Alex 6,
Francis 5, Rebecca 4, and Doctor (possibly Collins) 4. In my family bible I
show a Lamanda Crume who died in Feb 1911 age 75 in Marionville, MO. I show her
maiden name was Shipley. Also show Alexander Shipley and his date of death.
Show Collins Shipley and his date of death. (Is Doctor Shipley AKA Collins?)
Rebecca Shipley, I believe is my Gr Gr Grandmother. She married James Boster.
These names and dates coincide with what I found in the 1850 Census.
Would like more information
on the parents and siblings. Rebecca Shipley Boster's death certificate show
Alexander Shipley as her father and Milly Lamb as her mother. Both parents born
in TN. Are Randolph Shipley and Alexander Shipley the same person. So many
facts match, I feel this could be possible.
Any information or leads
would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Wilma, thank you for
replying. I too had found that Randolph's wife, Millie, maiden name was Mann.
This came from both a book on the Shipley's as well as the marriage license of
William Alexander Shipley (one of Randolph and Millie's sons.) The name Lamb
comes from the death certificates of Rebecca Shipley Boster and Amanda Shipley
Crume who were 2 of the daughters of Randolph and Millie. Also there is a
handwritten note on a piece of paper in our Family Bible that gives the name
Lamb. So, have been trying to find the marriage certificate of Randolph and
Millie, but so far have had no luck at all.
Thanks again for your
information.

My information about the father of William Alexander Shipley (called
Alec), Lamanda, and Becky is from Alec's application for a wedding license to
Martha Alice Rudesill. It says his Father's name was Randal. Alec's grandfather
Christopher Shipley named his son as Randal.
In the county just west of
McMinn was a Randolph R. Shipley. He is not the same person. The court house
there burned but other records exist to make it clear that each man, Randal and
Randolph R. were separate people.
I would be interested in
any documented source that names the Father of Alec as Randolph.
Jean Babcock, the
Granddaughter of Alec.

Ray, Lamanda's parents were
Randolph R. Shipley and Milly Ann. I have a possibility of two maiden names for
Milly Ann, but so far have not found what I hope to be definitive proof of her
maiden name. I have been looking for the marriage certificate of Randolph and
Millie and so far have not had any luck.
Randolph and Millie were in
the 1850 Census of McMinn Co. TN. Amanda age 14, Delilia age, 12, Sarah age 10,
Alex age 6, Francis age 5, Rebecca age 4, and Doctor age 1. Randolph and Millie
migrated to IL after 1850. Randolph died somewhere during the trip. Millie
remarried twice.
I am down Rebecca's line
and her marriage to James A. Boster.
I have additional info on
the family, if you are interested. Would be happy to share with you. I have
death certificates of Amanda (Lamanda), Rebecca and Alexander as well as obits.
Also some additional info on Amanda which I found in My Shipley Family,
Genealogical History of the Christopher Shipley Family by Sybil Shipley Jobe.

Notes for JAMES HARVEY SHIPLEY:
James H. Shipley's life is
a mystery. Nothing completely fits, but here is what I think is his history.
It is based on facts,
logic, guess work, some luck and the McClure family history in Arkansas and
Texas.
Here is my
story on James H. Shipley
1813 about, James H,
Shipley was born in probably Knox Co. Tennessee. Tax and court records show
that his father Christopher was living there until about 1821.
1830 He must had left home
by 1830 at the age of about 17 and that is why he was not in the 1830 census
with his other siblings.
1840 I find a James Shipley
the right age living in Hamilton Co. Tn next to McMinn Co. where the rest of
the clan still lived. This is possibly him although you cannot tell by the
census.

relatives from Tennessee.
A few notes on Sterling are
as follows;
"Estate of S.D. Shipley Dec'd"
Now on this day was presented to the court the inventory of
the estate of S.D. Shipley dec"d amount to the sum of Two Hundred and Two
Dollars as appraised and sworn by J.M.Durham, Jessie Williams, Z.T. Griffin as
the appraisers - - and is appearing to the court that the personal property
belonging to said Estate did not exceed in value Three Hundred Dollars. It is
herefore considered and ordered by the court that the same be accd is hereby
vested in the widow of said deceased.
Sterling was a lay Minister for the Methodist Church as was
his
father, and he officiated
at many marriages in Ozark Co. Mo.
Listed below is input from other sources on Sterling Davis
Shipley and Family
History. Some of it is a
duplicate of the above but it is still very good reading.
Shipley Family records state that Sterling was a bugler in the
civil war, but I find no other record of it.
Notes from Trudy Shipley Harper and others.
The 1850 Census shows him still living at home 19 yrs. old and
not married yet. They left Tennessee after Sept 1, 1850 when he married and
went to Arkansas. By 1858 they were in Missouri and went back to Arkansas
sometime after Feb. 1870. When he was living with his parents in Bradley Co.
Tn, Was when the Cherokee Indians on The "Trail Of Tears" were moved
to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi. Sterling was a wagon-maker and a farmer.
In the 1860 census for Mo. he is enumerated in Spring Creek
Township household #100 (his father was #99). Sterling bought 40 acres of land
on Spring Creek in Douglas Co. Mo. for $50.00 from the United States Govt. on
Oct. 27, 1857.
Book K page 341 shows that Homer F. Fellows assigned land to
Sterling D. Shipley at no charge on June 23, 1858 in Douglas Co. Mo.. Page 343
shows Sterling D. Shipley Assigns this same land to Nancy Buttram at no charge.
Sterling married #2 wife Charlotte/Sharlotta Hubbard and was
living in Ozark Co. Mo. when he enlisted as a Private in Company C 4th Missouri
infantry (CSA) on Feb 15, 1862. He was detailed as a wagon-maker. Sterling and
Charlotte's first son, Sterling Price Shipley was only 13 days old when
Sterling D. enlisted. Like many returning Confederate veterans, Sterling and
his family moved south into Arkansas. after the Civil War. They are listed in
Izard Co. Arkansas, Tablerock Township in the 1870 Census. Sometime during the
1870s, he moved the family to Fulton Co. Ark. where he died Dec. 1879. The
inventory of his estate is filed in Probate Book A, page 651 in Fulton Co. Ark.
