    The  Great Grandparents

Dennis Hurley Senior - from the Friendly Town (Norwood) by R.A. Dean (1821-1963)

In my little sketch of Dummer Township, it will be noted that the four men who first settled in the South Central section were forced to search for Keller's Mills and a supply of Flour and the miller had sent them on to 'Hurley's" where they found unthreshed wheat which, after laborious processing gave them a supply of that very necessary commodity.

"Hurley's" proved to be the home of Dennis Hurley who had come to Canada in 1825 with the "Peter Robinson Colony", from his native home in Cork, Ireland. Dennis had settled, at once, on Lot 15 in the Seventh Concession of the new Township of Asphodel where he lived out the remainder of his life, passing from a life of toil and hardship in 1850 at the age of 83? years. Before his death, Dennis had willed the homestead to his two sons. About 1860, Dennis Jr. bought his brother's share and continued to reside on the original homestead for his entire lifetime.

..time of his passing, Dennis Jr. was the owner of 200 acres in Asphodel (the homestead) - 265 acres in Dummer Township, some Town property in Peterborough, and a small tract of land in North Monaghan Township.

He married (2) JOHANNA ENGLISH (KEATING) 1830.
                         She was born in Ireland.

Notes for DENIS HURLEY:

Came to Canada with Peter Robinson Irish Settlement, 1825, settled Asphodel Twp, Peterboro County - 500 families in immigration.

The first school (later known as S.S. No. 6) was built about 1832 on the Hurley land. I understand that it was outside the present cemetery gates where wild apple trees have grown as far back as I can remember. The Abstract Index for W ˝ Lot 15 Conc. 7 shows that Denis Hurley had granted to the Episcopal Corporation of Kingston two acres of land for L5 (site of cemetery) 1850. The first Catholic Church was erected on the cemetery grounds about the year 1840 (the mound at the southern end of cemetery indicates the site. In 1856 the school was burned down and the church was used as a school room until a new brick school was built in 1868. Again the Land Abstract for W ˝ Lot 15 Conc. 7 shows that Denis Hurley granted to the trustees of S.S. No. 6 5 - 3/10 sq. chains for $1.00 in 1875. This would be the site of the present building and the former S.S. No. 6. The ‘cemetery’ church was used until 1869 until the present church in the village was constructed.

October 27, 1883 - this account is from a scrapbook found at Florence's.

"The many friends of Mr. D. J. Hurley of Hurley Bros. Publishers will be pleased to hear of the happy event which took place on Thursday evening last at St. Patrick's Church (Toronto) namely his marriage to Miss Katie McKittrick. The marriage was solemnized by Rev. Father Hayden, Miss Winnie O'Byren being bridesmaid and Mr. Thos. A. Hurley groomsman. Although the marriage was private, quite a number of friends were assembled at the church and many handsome presents were received. After supper which was served at their residence, John Street, the party accompanied the bridal couple to Union Station where they left on the midnight train for New York."

P. 681 Mulvaney: History of Peterboro, Co. (971.3 M 91)

Dennis Hurley, of lot 15, Concession 7, was born in on the farm where he now resides. His Father, Dennis Hurley , a native of Cork, Ireland, came to Canada in 1825 with Peter Robinson Colony, and settled on the farm, then a dense wilderness, which the subject of our sketch now owns. His is one of a family of four children, being a son by his Dad's second marriage. His mother's maiden name was Johanna Keating, also a native of Ireland. Dennis has lived on the homestead all his life. His father died 1850, at the age of eighty-three years. The homestead was willed to himself and brother, he buying his brother's share in about 1860. He married Mary Shea, daughter of Michael Shea, of this township. They have two sons and five daughters. He owns 200 acres of land where he lives, 265 acres in Dummer Township, and some town property in Peterborough; and a small tract of land in North Monaghan Township.

     Notes for FLORENCE H. HURLEY:

Norwood:

A farewell party was held at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Clare Telford Saturday afternoon for Miss Florence Hurley, the only remaining member of the Hurley family, who has sold her farm. She will be moving to her home on Simcoe Street, Peterborough, in the near future.
Miss Hurley is a nurse by profession and until fifteen years ago nursed in New York City. [View her Certificate 15 Nov 1920, NY]
Since her retiring, she has nursed two sisters and a brother who lived on the homestead, and who have predeceased her. Miss Hurley’s farm is a century farm which has been in the Hurley family since it was deeded to her father, Dennis Hurley by the Crown. Among those present at the farewell was Harry Fife. He and Miss Hurley are two of the three people still living who attended the Daisy Dee school together.
