THE LATE DENNIS HURLEY
Respected Resident of Asphodel Passed Away on Sunday Last
At his home, lot 15, con. 7, township of Asphodel, on Sunday, 21st. Inst.,
there passed away Dennis Hurley on the farm where he was born August 1st, 1835,
and has resided continuously since birth.
Deceased was in poor health for some time, suffering from serious stomach
trouble, and although his death was not unexpected, it came as a sad blow to
his family and friends.
The late Mr. Hurley was of an unassuming nature, a devout Catholic, honest,
industrious, and his untiring zeal has been crowned with success. He was
highly respected by a large circle of friends as was evidenced by the funeral
cortege that followed his remains to their last resting place, the Roman
Catholic Cemetery, Asphodel.
The funeral took place on Tuesday, 23rd inst. At 9:30 a.m.from the family
residence to St. Paul's church, Norwood, where Requiem High Mass was sung by
Rev. Father Conway, who, after the service, in a few well chosen words, paid a
fitting tribute to the sterling qualities of the deceased.
The late Mr. Hurley married Mary O'Shea, daughter of the late Michael O'Shea,
and their union has been blessed with a family of eleven children, - ten of
whom survive, six daughters and four sons who will ever miss the kind counsel
of a loving husband and a prudent and devoted father. There also remains to
mourn his loss two sisters, Mrs. (Alice) O'Connor and Mrs. Chas. Grant, and a
brother, Mr. T. Hurley, all residing at Peterborough.
In politics the late Mr. Hurley was a life-long Liberal and always took an
active interest in municipal matters. He was also for 40 years school
trustee for No. 6 Asphodel where his services were highly appreciated as was
shown by the fitting tribute paid him as the close of that long term.
The pall bearers were his four sons, William, James, Frederick, and Frank,
Dennis Dinan, son-in-law, and Phillip Fitzpatrick, nephew.
