"VAN LEAR MAN DIES AT AGE OF 103 BAILEY BOWLING, FATHER OF 15, DIES AFTER WEEK'S ILLNESS Bailey Bowling, possibly the oldest citizen of Johnson county, died at the home of a son at Van Lear Wednesday of this week. According to his children he was 103 years old, having been born in the year 1837. Mr. Bowling was a Virginian and came to the Big Sandy Valley with his parents when a child. He had in good health until a week before his death. His aged wife died 7 months ago. She, too, was near the century mark. The aged man was the father of 15 children, 13 of whom survive. Those living are: P.A. Bowling, Johns Creek; Joe Bowling, Van Lear; John Bowling, Mance Bowling and Amos Bowling, Beaver Creek; Lige Bowling, Pike county; Boyd Bowling, W. Va.; Mrs. Fan Pendleton and Mrs. Rissie Dawson, Daniels Creek; Mrs. Paulina Blair and Mrs. Clarinda Ward, Johns Creek, and Mrs. Nancy Kessenger, of Paintsville. Funeral and burial took place at Van Lear in charge of the Preston Funeral Home. The Paintsville Herald Thursday February 15, 1940.".
