Dorothy Addington, 80, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Dorothy Lee Brooks Addington, 80, of the Gravely community, departed to heaven at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center from an apparent heart attack. Born in Kingsport, she was raised in the Yuma community in Scott County, Va., residing in Virginia until 1951 when her family moved to Kingsport. She was an active member of Gravely Baptist Church, where she had been faithful for 50 years. She was president of the Women's Missionary Union at various time periods for 29 of those years. Additionally, she taught Sunday school, Discipleship Training, and Vacation Bible School, as well as serving on many other church committees. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bayard Addington in March of 1988; her parents, James Arthur Brooks and Nancy Haynes Brooks; and a brother, James A. Brooks Jr. in 1993. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald Addington and wife, June, Eureka, Mo., Mark E. Addington and wife, Judy, Kingsport; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Angela) Kirchgestner, Beaverton, Or., Mrs. Mike (Carolyn) Wilson, Hammond, La.; grandchildren, Kristi Brookshire, Erika Suerth and husband, Paul, Nikki Cory and husband, Jeff, Allison Suttle, Brittany Suttle, Brinley Addington and Breven Addington; two great-grandchildren, Chloe Cory and Kira Suerth. Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gravely Baptist Church with Pastor David Salley and the Rev. Ralph Crawford officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Trent Jr., Carlos Dickerson, Claude Riner, Terry Bennett, Bobby Anderson, Nelson Quillen, Mike Cassell and Larry Prillhart. Leslie (Red) Baker, 78, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Leslie (Red) Baker, 78, died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Newport News, Va., and had been a resident of Kingsport for 40 years. Mr. Baker graduated from New Port News High School and received his electrical training at Purdue University while in the Navy. Mr. Baker retired from Westinghouse Electrical Supply. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a loving person to his family and friends and enjoyed golf. He was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Richardson; and his parents. Surviving are his wife, Jean Baker; two daughters, Cathie Nelson, Poquoson, Va., and Francis Sawyer, Hampton, Va.; two stepdaughters, Linda Copp, Erwin and Judy Browder, Kingsport; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Herman Baker, Newport News, Va. Omer James Blakley, 95, Kingsport.

Services for Omer James Blakley, 95, Rock Springs community, Kingsport, who died Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2001), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Rock Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Robertson-Gouge officiating. Burial will follow at Rock Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Hammond Post No. 3. Jim Byrd, 50, Gate City, Va.

GATE CITY, Va. - James Henry (Jim) Byrd Sr., 50, Ravine Street, departed this life Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol. A native of Scott County, Va., he was a member of the Gate City Fire Department with 34 years of service. He was an ambulance driver. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Archie Byrd and Lovely Mae McDavid Byrd; and several aunts and uncles. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis L. Byrd, Gate City, Va.; a son, James H. Byrd Jr., Gate City, Va.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Teddy Douglas Pendleton, Judy Ann and Billy Addington, and Cathey Diane and Charles Robert Fields, all of Gate City, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William Nelson and Veda Byrd, Muriet Island, Fla., Donald Eugene and Carolyn Quillen Byrd, Blountville, and Richard Allen and Diane Byrd, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews. Bill Cavin, 54, Pineville, Ky.

PINEVILLE, Ky. - Billy Wayne (Bill) Cavin, 54, died Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. He was born in Lee County, Va. on Oct. 11, 1947 and was the son of Pauline Neal Cavin and the late Onlie Eldred Cavin. He was a member of the Greasy Creek Baptist Church and had been an insurance adjuster. Surviving are his wife, Willie Jean Goodin Cavin of Pineville; son, Todd Cavin of Pineville; mother, Pauline Cavin of Rose Hill, Calif.; brother, Johnny (Rosanna) Cavin of Ewing, Va.; sister, Suzanne (Terry) Estep of Ewing; and a host of nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home, Pineville, Ky. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greasy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Karen Depew, 45, Mount Carmel.

MOUNT CARMEL - Karen Eugenia Depew, 45, of 925 Hermitage Drive, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Depew was a native of Coeburn, Va., but had lived in Mount Carmel since 1965. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Depew was a member of Christ Fellowship Church. Surviving are her husband, Jerry Depew, Mount Carmel; two daughters, Ashley Brook Shelton, Mount Carmel, and Jessica LeAnn Depew, of the home; five sons, Brandon Michael Davis, Joshua Caine Davis, Joseph Craig Davis, Levi Sherman Welch and David Allen Depew, all of the home; parents, Ralph E. and JoAnn Keith Bond, Hampton, Tenn.; two sisters, Pamela Rose, Wise, Va., and Sherry B. Davis, Mount Carmel; one brother, John Bond, of Indiana; five grandchildren. Fred N. Frazier, 81, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Fred N. Frazier, 81, died 8 p.m. Wednesday (October 24, 2001) at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Scott County, Va., he spent most of his life in Kingsport. He served in the South Pacific with the U. S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Frazier was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by a son, Ted Lee Frazier, Sr.; three sisters, Mollie Frazier, Ora Frazier and Ida Overbay; one brother, Everett Frazier; and his wife, Velma. Survivors include his wife, Sue Hill Frazier, of the home; three sons, George Frazier, Kingsport, Bob Frazier and wife, Christiane, Rogersville, Dan Frazier and wife, Alice, Johnson City; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Bureda Lawson, 84, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Bureda Stanley Lawson, 84, departed this life Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Indian Path Hospital. She was born in Dickenson County, Va. on March 17, 1917. She was a faithful member of Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Lawson; a daughter, Janelle; and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Doris) Jones, Blountville, Mrs. James (Betty) Baker, Nashville; two sons, Tommy Lawson, Lithonia, Ga., and Darrell Lawson, Eidson, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Donnie (Betty) Jobe and Mrs. Letha Feagins; nine grandchildren, Michelle Stevens, Kent Jones, Brad Jones, Andrew Rowland, Clint Rowland, Daniel Lawson, Micah Lawson, Matthew Wilder and Crystal Wilder; a great-granddaughter, Misty Stevens; a great-grandson, Drew Rowland; numerous nieces and nephews. Clara McClintock, 68, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Mrs. Clara Mae Rutledge McClintock, 68, 902 Dale St., went home to be with the Lord at 3 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness. A native of Boones Creek, Tenn., she lived a short time in Johnson City and resided most of her life in Kingsport. She attended Douglass High School and was a member of St. Mark Methodist Church and a member of the church choir. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Ora Lee Rutledge, 1966; her father, Mr. Carl Dayton Rutledge, 1990; brother, Mr. Jackie Lee Rutledge; and son, Dwain Anthony McClintock, 1995. Surviving are her devoted husband of 49 years, Mr. Levenus McClintock; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Mr. Larry and Mrs. Madalene McClintock, Mr. Mark and Mrs. Lorraine McClintock, Mrs. Tammy B. KYLES FORD - Susie Albright Presley, 71, was born May 4, 1930 and departed this life Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Hancock Manor Nursing Home. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Laura Albright; one sister, Victoria Lawson; and one brother, Jay Albright. MOUNT CARMEL - Emer Kathleen Riner, 79, of 1067 Lloyds Chapel Road, went to be with the Lord Wednesday night (Oct. 24, 2001) at Church Hill Healthcare & Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. Born in Scott County, Va., she had resided in Hawkins County for the past 43 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. E. Riner; a son, C. E. Riner, Jr.; parents, Will and Rebecca Adams Williams; granddaughter, Misty Riner; a sister, Marie Davis; and three brothers, Josh, Howard and Clarence Williams. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Ball, Church Hill; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda Riner, Mount Carmel; five grandchildren, Amy Belcher and husband, Tony, Michelle Cradic and husband, Travis, Robin Dykes and wife, Becky, Scott Riner and wife, Tammy, Chris Dykes and wife, Libby; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Willie Penley, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews. Janivee Roach, 58, Duffield, Va.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Janivee McDavid Roach, 58, Route 4, died Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2001) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Scott County on Feb. 6, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Clifton McDavid and Lina Wallen McDavid. She was retired from Schaffer Greenhouse as a florist and did volunteer work at New Image Beauty Shop in Weber City, Va. Mrs. Roach was a Baptist and a member of Brick Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude C. Roach (Dec. 12, 2000). Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Randy Newton, Pontiac, Mich.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Renee Roach, Waterford, Mich., Rex and Danielle Roach, Pontiac, Mich.; grandchildren, Christina, Dale, Carl, Nicholis, Joey, Hannah, Hayley, Regina, Felicia, Shannon; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Jeffrey, Matthew, Marissa; sisters, Beulah Bishop and Anita Jones, both of Duffield, Va., Wanda Bishop, Dremia Smith and Charolette Lane, all of Church Hill; brothers, Gerald McDavid, Bruce McDavid, Vernon McDavid, and Samuel McDavid, all of Duffield, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy Roderick, 85, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Dorothy Chittum Roderick, 85, formerly of Carolina Avenue, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Anderson Health Care in Gray. Born in Roanoke, Va., she moved to Kingsport in 1925 and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew "Fate" Roderick in 1994. Surviving are several cousins. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

James Shaffer, 63, Riverside, Ohio.

RIVERSIDE, Ohio - James Carl Shaffer, 63, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2001) at his daughter's residence in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Shaffer was born in Hiltons, Va. on April 14, 1938, a son of the late Luther Shaffer and Ruby Shaffer Morrison. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was retired from Chrysler Dayton Thermal Products with 33 years of service. He loved anything that had to do with nature and the outdoors. He also enjoyed working with his hands. He was a good friend to many and would help anyone he could. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Musick Shaffer and two brothers, Walter and Paul Shaffer. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Brian Duncan, Dayton, Ohio; granddaughter, Crystal Gail Shaffer, Dayton, Ohio; grandson, Clinton Duncan, Dayton, Ohio; great grandson, Austin James Murphy, Dayton, Ohio; step-father, Charlie Morrison, Tenn.; brothers, Charlie Shaffer and Jim Shaffer, both of Dayton, Ohio, Roy Shaffer, Hillsboro, Ohio and Bill Shaffer, Va.; several nieces and nephews. James Shankles, 31, Columbia, S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - James P. Shankles, 31, Columbia, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001). Born in San Diego, Calif., he was the son of Ernest Reed Shankles Jr. and Donna Thornton Shankles of Columbia, S.C. He received a BA from U.C. Berkley and a judicial doctorate at U.C. Los Angeles School of Law. He lived and worked in Los Angeles until he became ill at which time he moved to Columbia to be with his parents. Mr. Shankles was a member of the Columbia, S.C. Sertoma Club, the American Bar Association, and the California Bar Association and the UCLA Alumni Association. He was an avid UCLA Bruins fan. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, James and Mabel Thornton; and paternal grandfather, Ernest Reed Shankles. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Jodi Shankles, Weehawken, N.J.; paternal grandmother, Ruth Shankles, Kingsport; aunts and uncles, David Shankles, Charlotte, N.C., Roland and Karen Shankles, Knoxville, Charles and Jean Shankles, Hickory, N.C. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on the campus of the University of South Carolina by The Reverend Tim Lijewski. James Webster, 74, Surgoinsville.

SURGOINSVILLE - James Edward Webster, 74, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Church Hill Health Care Center. He was born in Alabama, but spent most of his life in Surgoinsville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dixie and Burlie Manor Webster; and one sister, Helen Cavin. Surviving are his stepmother, Hattie Webster, Morristown; one brother, Joe Webster, Rogersville; sisters, Ruby Hunley and Lucille Smith, Rogersville, Rita Morris, Surgoinsville, Judy Carey, Church Hill and Catherine Cupp, Morristown; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville. Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev.
