            Dorothy Addington, 80, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Dorothy Lee Brooks Addington, 80, of the Gravely 
            community, departed to heaven at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at 
            Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center from an apparent heart 
            attack. 
            Born in Kingsport, she was raised in the Yuma community in Scott 
            County, Va., residing in Virginia until 1951 when her family moved 
            to Kingsport. 
            She was an active member of Gravely Baptist Church, where she had 
            been faithful for 50 years. She was president of the Women's 
            Missionary Union at various time periods for 29 of those years. 
            Additionally, she taught Sunday school, Discipleship Training, and 
            Vacation Bible School, as well as serving on many other church 
            committees. 
            She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and 
            great-grandmother. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Bayard Addington in March 
            of 1988; her parents, James Arthur Brooks and Nancy Haynes Brooks; 
            and a brother, James A. Brooks Jr. in 1993. 
               
            Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald Addington and 
            wife, June, Eureka, Mo., Mark E. Addington and wife, Judy, 
            Kingsport; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Angela) Kirchgestner, 
            Beaverton, Or., Mrs. Mike (Carolyn) Wilson, Hammond, La.; 
            grandchildren, Kristi Brookshire, Erika Suerth and husband, Paul, 
            Nikki Cory and husband, Jeff, Allison Suttle, Brittany Suttle, 
            Brinley Addington and Breven Addington; two great-grandchildren, 
            Chloe Cory and Kira Suerth. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Gravely Baptist Church 
            with Pastor David Salley officiating. 
            The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services. 

            Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery. 
            Pallbearers will be John Trent Jr., Claude Riner, Terry Bennett, 
            Bobby Anderson, Nelson Quillen, Mike Cassell, Larry Prillhart and 
            Michael Brookshire. 
            Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Burchette, Harold Derrick, 
            Robert Wininger, Clarence Caldwell, Howard Bolden and Carlos 
            Dickerson.

            Memorial services for Leslie (Red) Baker, 78, Kingsport, who died 
            Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the 
            Oak Hill Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Cloud officiating.

            Robert Bass Jr., Rogersville. 

            ROGERSVILLE - Robert Bass Jr., born June 30, 1920 in Osaka, Va., 
            died Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) after a lengthy illness. 
            He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rogersville. 
            He was a World War II veteran and worked with atomic energy Y-12 at 
            Oak Ridge. He also worked with McDonnel-Douglas in St. Louis. When 
            he retired, he moved back to Rogersville until his failing health 
            and he expired in an Atlanta nursing facility. 
            Surviving are his daughter, Marilyn Austin, Kingsport; two sons, 
            Robert Bass III, Atlanta, Ga., and James Frank Bass, St. Louis, Mo.; 
            sisters, Mrs. Mary Ruth Simerly; two brothers, Roy K. Bass, 
            Hendersonville, Tenn., and Walter T. Bass, Lawrenceville, Ga.; three 
            grandchildren; one aunt, Georgia Davis, Rogersville. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Colboch-Price Funeral 
            Home, Rogersville. 
            Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist 
            Church of Rogersville with the Rev. Robert E. Riley officiating. 
            Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.

            Frances Bostick, 50, Hixson, Tenn. 

            HIXSON, Tenn. - Frances Hale Bostick, 50, formerly of Rogersville, 
            departed this life Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Erlanger Hospital in 
            Chattanooga. 
            She was born in Rogersville and retired from TVA after 15 years of 
            service as an employee in the Data Center. She was a member of New 
            United Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her father, Earnest Hale; and a sister, 
            Lena Hale. 
            Surviving are her husband, William Bostick of Chattanooga; one 
            daughter, Keesha Bostick; one son, Darris Hale and wife Denise, both 
            of Hixson, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Darris Hale Jr. and Elena Hale, 
            both of Hixson; mother, Shirley Hale of Rogersville; grandmother, 
            Mabel Hale; two sisters, Shirlene Hale of Rogersville and Edwinna 
            Hale of Morristown; six brothers, Larry Hale and Wendell Hale, both 
            of Rogersville, Michael Hale of Kingsport, Greg Hale of Chattanooga, 
            Jerry Hale and Terry Hale, both of Morristown; two nieces, Misty 
            Hale and Julianne Hale; two nephews, Jason Hale and Christopher 
            Hale.

            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Alfred Hale and the Rev. Lester Cartwright

            Jim Byrd, 51, Gate City, Va. 

            GATE CITY, Va. - James Henry (Jim) Byrd Sr., 51, Ravine Street, 
            departed this life Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice 
            House in Bristol. 
            A native of Scott County, Va., he was a member of Gate City Fire 
            Department with 34 years of service. He was an ambulance driver. 
            He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Archie Byrd and 
            Lovely Mae McDavid Byrd; and several aunts and uncles. 
            Surviving are his wife, Phyllis L. Byrd, Gate City, Va.; a son, 
            James H. Byrd Jr., Gate City, Va.; three sisters and 
            brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Teddy Douglas Pendleton, Judy Ann and 
            Billy Addington, and Cathy Diane and Charles Robert Fields, all of 
            Gate City, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William Nelson 
            and Veda Byrd, Merritt Island, Fla., Donald Eugene and Carolyn 
            Quillen Byrd, Blountville, and Richard Allen and Diane Byrd, 
            Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

            Va.

            Bill Cavin, 54, Pineville, Ky. 

            PINEVILLE, Ky. - Billy Wayne (Bill) Cavin, 54, died Wednesday (Oct. 
            24, 2001) at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. 
            He was born in Lee County, Va. on Oct. 11, 1947 and was the son of 
            Pauline Neal Cavin and the late Onlie Eldred Cavin. He was a member 
            of the Greasy Creek Baptist Church and had been an insurance 
            adjuster. 
            Surviving are his wife, Willie Jean Goodin Cavin of Pineville; son, 
            Todd Cavin of Pineville; mother, Pauline Cavin of Rose Hill, Va.; 
            brother, Johnny (Rosanna) Cavin of Ewing, Va.; sister, Suzanne 
            (Terry) Estep of Ewing; and a host of nieces and nephews. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Greasy Creek Baptist 
            Church with the Rev. Hurla Phillips and the Rev. Ralph Whitaker 
            officiating. 
            Burial will be in the Pinelawn Memorial Garden, Pineville. 
            Pallbearers will be family and friends.

            London, Dr. Lohe and staff of Barbourville, Family Home Health,

            Ethel W. Cutshall, 82, Fall Branch. 

            FALL BRANCH - Ethel June Whitaker Cutshall, 82, Butchertown Road, 
            died Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) at the Johnson City Medical Center after 
            a lengthy illness. 
            Mrs. Cutshall was a homemaker. A lifelong resident of Washington 
            County, she lived her last months with her sister at Appalachian 
            Christian Village. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Cutshall; parents, 
            Orgie and Martha Hensley Whitaker; four brothers, Odus, Guy, Kenneth 
            and Orland Whitaker; two sisters, Viola and Cathlean Whitaker. 
            Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Bruce Reed, 
            Fall Branch; two sisters, Dessie Whitaker, Appalachian Christian 
            Village and Norma Jean Mitchel, Chuckey; one granddaughter, Kimberly 
            Rush Kilian and husband, Chuck, Fall Branch; and several nieces and 
            nephews.

            of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home.

            925 Hermitage Drive, who passed away Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) will

            G. Fred Eller, 89, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - G. Fred Eller, 89, departed his earthly home for his 
            eternal home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his 
            beloved wife Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) at Indian Path Hospital after a 
            lingering illness. 
            Born in Sutherland, Johnson County, Tenn., he had lived in Kingsport 
            since 1948. He and his wife formerly owned The Friendly Market and 
            Oak Glen Grocery. 
            Fred was an active member of Cedar View Independent Methodist Church 
            for over 40 years until his illness. He was a former Sunday school 
            superintendent and teacher. He was also a member of the board and 
            sang in the choir. 
            He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel M. Eller in 1987; his 
            parents, Jessie and Eliza Eller; and an infant brother. 
               
            Fred is survived by his daughter, Bobbye Millhorn; son-in-law, Tom; 
            granddaughter, Cindy M. Fleenor; great-granddaughter, Jamie Fleenor; 
            four sisters, Ruth Clarke, Olive Humphries, Johnson City, Kate 
            Shupe, Mountain City, and Maurene Robinson and brother-in-law, Bob, 
            Wilmington, Del.; four brothers, Bruce, Howard, sister-in-law, Ruby, 
            Ray, Jack and sister-in-law, June Eller, all of Johnson City; and 
            several nieces and nephews.

            or anytime at the daughter's residence. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cedar View

            Helen M. Feathers, 81, Blountville. 

            BLOUNTVILLE - Helen Marie Shipley Feathers, 81, Indian Springs, went 
            peacefully to be with the Lord Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) in the 
            Greystone Health Care Center after a long illness. 
            Helen was born July 20, 1920 in Johnson City, a daughter of the late 
            Henry and Stella Mahoney Shipley and was the widow of Garland 
            Feathers. She was a member of the Sunnyside Baptist Church, where 
            she was a former member of the choir. 
            In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 
            her son, Bobby Feathers. 
               
            Helen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Betty 
            Feathers, of the home; grandsons, Douglas Feathers and Tommy 
            Feathers; granddaughter, Mrs. Scott (Donna) Mendenhall; a 
            great-grandson, Michael Feathers; sister-in-law, Mrs. Jim (Coleen) 
            Pierce, Abingdon, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

            Services for Fred N. Frazier, 81, Kingsport, who died 8 p.m.

            Bart Walker officiating.

            Fred Grills, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Fred Grills died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at 7:30 p.m. 
            at his residence after a courageous battle with lung cancer. 
            Born in Kingsport, he was a son of Noah and Ella Hood Grills. He was 
            a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He 
            received two Purple Hearts, Oak Leaf Cluster and Bronze Star. 
            Fred retired from the City of Kingsport as building official after 
            38 years of service. He continued to work as building inspector with 
            Eastman Credit Union for the last 17 years. 
            Fred was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. He 
            was a life member of VFW Post No. 3382, Moose Lodge No. 972, 
            Disabled Veterans, Masonic Lodge No. 688, Eastern Star No. 198 and 
            Eagles Lodge. 
            Fred served on the board of directors of the Southern Building Code 
            covering 17 southern states. He served as president elect and 
            president two years for the Southern Building Code Group. By this 
            position he was invited by President Gerald Ford to represent the 17 
            Southern states to attend the Inflation Conference in Washington, 
            D.C. He served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army, post 
            commander of the First District, and many offices and committees in 
            the State VFW. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Ella Hood Grills; 
            brothers, J.D. Grills and Rex Grills. 
               
            Surviving are his loving wife Wanda of 55 years; daughter Rebecca 
            and son-in-law, John Grills; granddaughter (little angel) Ashley; 
            brothers, Robert and Russell Grills; several nieces and nephews and 
            many friends. 
            To know him was to love him. He will be sadly missed by all who knew 
            him. 
            Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oak Hill 
            Funeral Home or anytime at the residence. 
            Viewing will be in the church sanctuary of First Broad Street United 
            Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with services being conducted

            Bureda Lawson, 84, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Bureda Stanley Lawson, 84, departed this life Thursday 
            (Oct. 25, 2001) at Indian Path Hospital. 
            She was born in Dickenson County, Va. on March 17, 1917. She was a 
            faithful member of Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Lawson; a daughter, 
            Janelle; and several brothers and sisters. 
               
            Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Doris) Jones, Blountville, 
            Mrs. James (Betty) Baker, Nashville; two sons, Tommy Lawson, 
            Lithonia, Ga., and Darrell Lawson, Eidson, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. 
            Donnie (Betty) Jobe and Mrs. Letha Feagins; nine grandchildren, 
            Michelle Stevens, Kent Jones, Brad Jones, Andrew Rowland, Clint 
            Rowland, Daniel Lawson, Micah Lawson, Matthew Wilder and Crystal 
            Wilder; five great-grandchildren, Misty Stevens, Drew Rowland, 
            Dillion Bivings, Jessica Bridwell and Joshua Harper; numerous nieces 
            and nephews.

            Houston Martin, 73, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Houston Allen (Hootie) Martin, 73, 2244 Idle Hour Road, 
            passed away Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) at his home following a brief 
            illness. 
            Mr. Houston was a native of Amhyrst, Va., but had lived in Kingsport 
            for the last seven years. He was of the Baptist faith and was a 
            retired tree worker. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis H. and Dilly 
            Williams Martin; two sisters; and five brothers. 
            Surviving are one brother, John W. Martin, Kingsport; three sisters, 
            Rene Mays, Chester, Va., Birdie McFadden, Richmond, Va., and Annie 
            Jones, Amhyrst, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

            Services for Mrs. Clara Mae Rutledge McClintock, 68, 902 Dale St., 
            Kingsport, who went home to be with the Lord at 3 p.m. Wednesday 
            (Oct. 24, 2001) will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark 
            Methodist Church with Pastor Doug Tweed officiating.

            Carl E. Peters, 77, Weber City, Va. 

            WEBER CITY, Va. - Carl Edward Peters, 77, Church Street, departed 
            this life Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center. 

            A native of Creoma, Ky., he was a life member of the International 
            Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, holding membership for 
            51 consecutive years, October 1950 to October 2001. 
            He entered the armed services in 1943, and served in the U.S. Army's 
            1st Division during World War II. He served first as an infantryman, 
            landing on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion and later saw 
            combat in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After having been 
            wounded twice, he was transferred to the 4th Signal Battalion, where 
            he served his remaining tour of duty. After the war's end, he 
            continued to serve an additional year in the Army during the 
            occupation of Germany. 
            He was a member of Holston View United Methodist Church. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, George M. Peters and Lula 
            Vermillion Peters; and a brother, H. Paul Peters. 
            Surviving are his wife, June Haynes Peters, Weber City, Va.; sons 
            and daughters-in-law, Lynn Edward Peters and Sue Cassell Peters, 
            Lebanon, Va., Ronnie Peters and Kimberly Sivert Peters, Mount 
            Carmel; grandchildren, Carrie Michele Peters and fiance Daniel

            KYLES FORD - Services for Susie Albright Presley, 71, who was born

            Emer Kathleen Riner, 79, Mount Carmel. 

            MOUNT CARMEL - Emer Kathleen Riner, 79, of 1067 Lloyds Chapel Road, 
            went to be with the Lord Wednesday night (Oct. 24, 2001) at Church 
            Hill Healthcare & Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. 
            Born in Scott County, Va., she had resided in Hawkins County for the 
            past 43 years. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, C. E. Riner; a son, C. E. 
            Riner, Jr.; parents, Will and Rebecca Adams Williams; granddaughter, 
            Misty Riner; a sister, Marie Davis; and three brothers, Josh, Howard 
            and Clarence Williams. 
               
            Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Ball, Church Hill; a son and 
            daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda Riner, Mount Carmel; five 
            grandchildren, Amy Belcher and husband, Tony, Michelle Cradic and 
            husband, Travis, Robin Dykes and wife, Becky, Scott Riner and wife, 
            Tammy, Chris Dykes and wife, Libby; eight great-grandchildren; five 
            step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Willie Penley, Kingsport; 
            several nieces and nephews.

            DUFFIELD, Va. - Graveside services for Janivee McDavid Roach, 58, 
            Route 4, who died Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2001) will be conducted at 2 
            p.m. today at Roach Cemetery in Clinchport, Va. The family will meet 
            at 1 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. 
            Nephews will serve as pallbearers. 
            In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family. Donations 
            and food may be left at New Image Beauty Shop in Weber City.

            Dorothy Roderick, 85, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Dorothy Chittum Roderick, 85, formerly of Carolina 
            Avenue, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Anderson Health Care in 
            Gray. 
            Born in Roanoke, Va., she moved to Kingsport in 1925 and was a 
            member of Temple Baptist Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew "Fate" Roderick in 
            1994. 
               
            Surviving are several cousins. Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. 
            Sunday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home 
            chapel with Pastor Bobby Russell officiating. 
            Burial will be in the Gunnings Cemetery, Blountville.

            James Shaffer, 63, Riverside, Ohio. 

            RIVERSIDE, Ohio - Services for James Carl Shaffer, 63, who passed 
            away unexpectedly Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2001) will be conducted at 11 
            a.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City 
            Funeral Home with the Rev. Claude Lane and the Rev. C.W. Reedy 
            officiating. Carolyn Maddux will provide the music. 
            Burial will follow the services at the Strong Cemetery with military 
            graveside rites conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of 
            the V.F.W. 
            Travis Flanary, Tommy Musick, Shannon Musick, Kelly Musick, Stuart

            Everette Stewart, 76, Norton, Va. 

            NORTON, Va. - Everette "Turtle" Stewart, 76, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 
            2001) at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Big Stone Gap, Va. 
            Mr. Stewart served in the United States Navy during World War II in 
            the European Theatre, taking part in the invasion of North Africa 
            and other significant invasions of the war. "Turtle" was a life time 
            member and past commander of VFW Post 4301 of Norton. He was 
            instrumental in establishing the VFW's "Voice of Democracy" 
            citizenship award at John I. Burton High School. He was also a 
            member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 56 of Wise. 
            "Turtle" was a member of the East Park Avenue Baptist Church and was 
            fondly remembered by many for coaching in the Norton Little League 
            for over 20 years. 
            Surviving are his wife, Irene Stewart; two stepsons, Roy H. Stewart 
            and James Stewart, Norton, Va.; sisters, Evelyn Stallard, Norton, 
            Va., Sarah Blankenbeeler Johnson and Mary Helen Stallard, Wise, Va.; 
            brothers, William C. "Sonny" Stewart, Waldorf, Md., and Glen 
            Stewart, Gainesville, Fla. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hagy-Fawbush Funeral 
            Home in Norton, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. Roger Sloce officiating.

            Reed Mitchell officiating.
