            Services for Sarah Blanche Addington, 88, of Route 1, Nickelsville, 
            Va., who departed this life Saturday (Oct. 27, 2001) will be 
            conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of Scott County Funeral 
            Home, Weber City, Va., with the Rev. Henry Wayne Meade and the Rev. 
            Steve Collins officiating. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and 
            anytime at the residence of her daughter, Thelma Broadwater. 
            Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Addington Family Cemetery 
            in Nickelsville. 
            The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go to the 
            cemetery. 
            Pallbearers will be Dick Odle, Pete Odle, Gary Addington, Danny 
            Dixon, Billy Wayne Gilmer, Thomas Hillman and Harry Broadwater.

            Robert Bass Jr., Rogersville. 

            ROGERSVILLE - Services for Robert Bass Jr., who was born June 30, 
            1920 in Osaka, Va., and died Friday (Oct. 26, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 11 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church of 
            Rogersville with the Rev. Robert E. Riley officiating. 
            Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. 
            Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge of the 
            arrangements. 

            Jack B. Begley, 81, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Jack B. Begley, 81, went to be with Jesus Saturday (Oct. 
            27, 2001) in the VA Medical Center in Johnson City after a period of 
            declining health. 
            Jack was born June 21, 1920 in Scott County, Va., a son of the late 
            Grover and Frances Laney Begley. 
            He was a member of Parker's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. 
            He proudly served his country in Europe during World War II. He was 
            retired from Penn-Dixie after 33 years of service. 
            In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his 14 
            brothers and sisters, Horton, Lonnie, Charlie, Tucker, Audley, 
            Cornie Begley, Claudia Carver, Bessie Tomlinson, Lizzie Fields, 
            Nellie Barker, Myrtle Baldwin, Lillie Peak, Mary Vaughn and Ruby 
            Begley. 
               
            Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Riner Begley, of the 
            home; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Phil Lane, Kingsport; three 
            sons and daughters-in-law, Mack and Phyllis Begley, Bill and Mabel 
            Begley, all of Kingsport, and Jack Jr. and Lynda Begley, 
            Blountville; four granddaughters, Melissa Goins, Kingsport, Buffy 
            Fleenor, Church Hill, Kristel Begley, Bluff City, Shelley Begley, 
            Kingsport; two grandsons, Joe Begley and Bobby Begley, both of 
            Kingsport; one great-granddaughter, Cassie Fleenor; one 
            great-grandson, Matthew Fleenor Jr.; one stepgranddaughter, Cynthia 
            Estep, Kingsport; one stepgrandson, Brian Estep, Knoxville; two 
            sisters, Helen Shupe, Kingsport, and Hazel Hillman, Ft. Blackmore, 
            Va.; two brothers, Jessie Begley and Hubert Begley, both of Gray; a 
            special family friend, Ronnie Hammonds. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Parker's Chapel 
            Freewill Baptist Church, and anytime at the home. 
            Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the 
            Rev. Gary Calhoun and the Rev. Robert (Jr.) Parker officiating. 
            Jack will be taken to the church one hour before the service. 
            Interment will follow in the Carter's Family Cemetery in Ft. 
            Blackmore, Va., with full military honors conducted by the American 
            Legion Hammond Post No. 3. 
            Pallbearers will be Anthony Dickens, Eddie Kilgore, Lance Edwards, 
            Junior Kilgore, Trevor Cole, Jim Mann, Mike Steffey and Barry 
            Pearcy.

            GATE CITY, Va. - Services for James Henry (Jim) Byrd Sr., 51, Ravine 
            Street, who departed this life Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001), will be 
            conducted at 8 p.m. today at Midway Baptist Church with the Rev. 
            George Willis and the Rev. Paul Allison officiating. 
            Music will be provided by the Midway Quartet.

            Dona Virginia Doss, 78, Dryden, Va. 

            DRYDEN, Va. - Dona Virginia Doss, 78, passed away Saturday (Oct. 27, 
            2001) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. 
            She was a lifelong resident of Lee County, and a daughter of the 
            late Herman and Cornie Dean Doss. She had resided at Carter Hall 
            Health Care in Dryden for the past 13 years. 
            She was of the Baptist faith. 
            Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Tincie Ely of Route 2, Pennington 
            Gap, Va.; and also many cousins. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sturgill Funeral 
            Home in Pennington Gap, Va. 
            Committal graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in 
            the Powell Valley Cemetery, Dryden, with the Rev. Doug Clem 
            officiating. 
            Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 
            a.m. Tuesday.

            Services for G. Fred Eller, 89, Kingsport, who departed his earthly 
            home for his eternal home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus 
            Christ and his beloved wife Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) will be conducted 
            at 2 p.m. today at the Cedar View Independent Methodist Church with 
            Dr. Jim Fields and the Rev. T.J. Knox officiating. The body will be 
            taken to the church one hour prior to the service. 
            Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

            Ruby Evelyn Fortner, 86, Keokee, Va. 

            KEOKEE, Va. - Ruby Evelyn Fortner, 86, of the Robbins Chapel 
            community, went peacefully to be with the Lord and her husband John 
            W. Fortner on Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001). 
            Ruby was born in Robbins Chapel and had been a resident of Lee 
            County her entire life. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, 
            great-grandmother and a friend to all who knew her. 
            She was a member of the Robbins Chapel United Methodist Church in 
            Keokee, Va., all her life. 
            Se was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Fortner; parents, 
            William and Fannie Thommas; and two brothers, Hubert and Ralph 
            Thomas. 
            Survivors include three sons, Lonnie Fortner and wife Terri of Mount 
            Carmel, Ronnie Fortner and wife Nyoka of Dandridge, Tenn., and 
            Johnny M. Fortner and wife Alice of Robbins Chapel; one daughter, 
            Vicki Fortner of Pennington Gap, Va.; special friend, Mary Lewis of 
            Pennington Gap, Va.; seven grandchildren, Lisa and Jesse Fortner, 
            Dreama and Dylan Fortner, Michele Davis and husband Steve, Valerie 
            Ewing and husband Barry, and Johnny Darrel Fortner; five 
            great-grandchildren, Steven and Derek Wesley Davis, Ashley, Skyler

            Etta Conkin Godsey, 86, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Etta Conkin Godsey, 86, 609 Bays Cove Trail, formerly of 
            7149 Lone Star Road, passed away Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27, 2001) 
            at her daughter's home following an extended period of poor health. 
            Mrs. Godsey was born in Sullivan County where she had lived her 
            entire life. 
            She was of the Baptist faith. 
            Her husband, Carl Worley Godsey (Aug. 22, 2000), preceded her in 
            death. 
            Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Marie Morgan 
            and James Donald, Kingsport; two grandchildren, Letitia Thacker, 
            Kingsport, and Nanette Peters, Johnson City; four 
            great-grandchildren, Stephanie Hyatt, Makayla Peters, Sarah Thacker 
            and Caitlin Peters; a sister, Lee Ella Bruner, Tampa, Fla.; and a 
            brother, Onnie Conkin, Kingsport.

            Shirley Hopkins, 75, Jonesville, Va. 

            JONESVILLE, Va. - Shirley Monroe Hopkins, 75, went home to be with 
            his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday (Oct. 27, 2001) at 
            Holston Valley Medical Center. 
            He was born in Lee County, Va., on Dec. 10, 1925 and had been a 
            resident there his entire life. 
            He was a member of Belchers Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in 
            Pennington Gap, Va. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Nancy Seals 
            Hopkins; two brothers, Ed and Frank Hopkins; one sister, Minnie 
            Duncan; three nephews and one niece. 
            Surviving are his sisters, Hazel Parks, Jonesville, Ruth Ennis, 
            Stafford, Va., and Lillie Davis, Pennington Gap, Va.; brother, J.C. 
            Hopkins, Rose Hill, Va.; half brother, Hagan Johnson, Jonesville; 
            nieces, Deborah Livesay and Loretta Orr, both of Jonesville; nephew, 
            Boyd Parks Jr., Jonesville; a very special niece, Paula Parks, 
            Jonesville; and a host of other nieces and nephews.

            Frank Scott Key, 98, Kingsport. 

            KINGSPORT - Mr. Frank Scott Key, 98, passed away Sunday (Oct. 28, 
            2001) at his home. 
            Mr. Key was born May 1, 1903 in the Territory of New Mexico. He 
            worked for several years as a water works engineer for the City of 
            Kingsport. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, John V. and Sally Key. 
            Surviving are two daughters, Francis Henke and Mary Arnold, both of 
            Kingsport; one granddaughter, Sherry Blevins of Orlando, Fla.; two 
            great-grandsons, Aaron Blevins and Jeremy Blevins, both of Orlando, 
            Fla. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill 
            Cemetery with the Rev. Don Nation officiating. 
            Friends may call after 4 p.m. at the family's home.

            ABINGDON, Va. - John (Jay) William Martin, 65, of Kingsport, passed 
            away early Sunday morning (Oct. 28, 2001) at Grace Health Care in 
            Abingdon following an extended illness. 
            He was born in Hawkins County, but had spent most of his life in 
            Kingsport. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, James Andrew and Ruby Mae 
            Martin; a sister, Stella Barrett; and a brother, James Martin. 
            Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Catron of Kingsport, Tammy 
            McDaniel of Russellville, Ala., and Donna Martin of Athens, Tenn.; 
            four sons, Johnny Martin of Kingsport, Ronny Martin of Fall Branch, 
            Danny Martin of Kingsport, and Kenny Martin of Tiptonville, Tenn.; 
            10 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter; two sisters, Mae Mauk 
            and Nellie Davidson, both of Surgoinsville; two brothers, Tom Martin 
            of Greeneville, and Ed Martin of Rogersville; along with several 
            nieces and nephews.

            ROGERSVILLE - Joe Ransom Mathews, 59, of 471 Early Branch Road, 
            passed away Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley 
            Medical Center following an extended illness.

            Stella A. McConnell, 91, Coeburn, Va. 

            COEBURN, Va. - Stella A. McConnell, 91, passed away Saturday (Oct. 
            27, 2001) in the St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, Va. 
            She attended the First Baptist Church of Coeburn, and was a member 
            of the Pocahontas Rebekah Lodge No. 24. 
            She was the widow of Wiley McConnell. 
            Surviving are a son, Tom McConnell of Coeburn; a daughter, Barbara 
            Bray of Coeburn; four sisters, Edith Hammonds and Ruth Dotson, both 
            of Hampton, Va., Madeline Rose of Coeburn, and Dollie Lundy of 
            Kingsport; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several 
            nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Dorsie Rasnick, Phyllis 
            Mitchell, Carol Mullins and Joyce Hamilton.

            Don Messimer, 61, Johnson City. 

            JOHNSON CITY - Don Messimer, 61, 4011 Sanford Drive, died Friday 
            (Oct. 26, 2001) in the Johnson City Medical Center following a 
            lengthy illness. 
            He was a native of West Frankfort, Ill., but had lived most of his 
            life in Johnson City. He was a son of Lorraine Frank Messimer, 
            Johnson City, and the late Erby Messimer. 
            Mr. Messimer had served in the Army Reserve. 
            He was the owner of Don's Barber Shop, Walnut Street, Johnson City, 
            for over 40 years. 
            Mr. Messimer was a member and deacon of Unicoi Christian Church in 
            Unicoi. 
            Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Pansy Miller 
            Messimer; a son, Danny Messimer and his wife Lisa, Acworth, Ga.; a 
            daughter, Jennifer James and her husband Christopher, Gray; two 
            granddaughters, Ashley and Sierra Messimer, Acworth, Ga.; four 
            brothers, Emil Messimer, Jonesborough, Wendell Messimer and Ronnie 
            Messimer, both of Johnson City, and James Messimer, Bristol, Tenn.; 
            several nieces, nephews and extended family. 
            Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Morris-Baker Funeral 
            Home, Johnson City, and other hours at the residence. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the South Chapel of 
            the funeral home. Mr. Ed Hayes and Mr. Troy Gaddy will officiate.

            Committal services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Monte Vista 
            Burial Park.

            Carl Pridemore, 56, Jonesville, Va. 

            JONESVILLE, Va. - Carl Wayne Pridemore, 56, formerly of Ages, Ky., 
            died Saturday (Oct. 27, 2001) at Lee Regional Medical Center in 
            Pennington Gap, Va. 
            He was born on Nov. 3, 1944 in Whitley County, Ky., and had been a 
            resident there most of his life, having moved to Jonesville six 
            years ago. 
            He was a coal miner with Blue Gate Energy in Highsplint, Ky., and 
            was a veteran of the U.S. Army. 
            He was of the Holiness faith. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Pridemore and 
            Georgia Sturdivant Pridemore. 
            Surviving are his wife, Jean Thomas Pridemore, Jonesville; two 
            children and their spouses, Clifford Wayne and DeEdra Pridemore, 
            Richlands, N.C., and Joyce Karen and Dave Pennington, LaFollette, 
            Tenn.; mother-in-law, Vinia Thomas, Kenvir, Ky.; brother-in-law, 
            Lonnie Thomas, Kenvir, Ky.; sister, Lisa Pridemore, Lejunior, Ky.;

            ROSE HILL, Va. - Grover Wilder, 79, passed away Saturday (Oct. 27, 
            2001) at Tri-State Comprehensive Care Center in Harrogate, Tenn. 
            He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Rose Hill, 
            and was a veteran of World War II. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Hervey and Martha Wilder; 
            brothers, Harrison and wife Parlee Wilder, Gustin and wife Selma 
            Wilder, Lester Wilder and Arthur Wilder; one sister, Gracie and 
            husband Theodore Sensabough. 
            Surviving are his wife, Virginia Wilder, Rose Hill; three sons, Rex 
            Wilder, Troy, Ohio, Billy Wilder, Dayton, Ohio, and Harold J. 
            Wilder, Springfield, Ohio; one daughter, Opal Denton, Rose Hill; 11 
            grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Olin Wilder, 
            Woodbine, Md.; and sister, Gladys Lauthan, Sneedville. 
            Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Arney-Mullins Funeral 
            Home in Rose Hill. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home 
            chapel with the Rev. John Zion officiating. 
            Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Morgan Cemetery in Rose 
            Hill.
