Ralph Robinette, 73, Norton, Va. Ralph Robinette, 73, Norton, Va. NORTON, Va. - Ralph Delmar Robinette, 73, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at his home in Powell Valley. He was born to the late Rudolph and Hazel Adams Robinette and lived his entire life in the Wise County area. He was a retired carpenter and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War era. Surviving are a sister, Billie Lee Wilson, Tampa, Fla.; nephews, Randy Robinette, Unionville, Va., and Alan Robinette, Locust Grove, Va.; nieces, Tresea Woody and Ann Hale, both of Alexandria, Va., and Katy Woody, Fredricksburg, Va. SURGOINSVILLE - Carl W. Bruner, 84, of Brookhaven Health Care Center and formerly of Surgoinsville, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Brookhaven following an extended illness. Mr. Bruner was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County, and was a member of Fudges Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Grace Bruner; his parents, Samuel and Lida Scism Bruner; several brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Rex and Fern Bruner of Church Hill, Bobby and Wanda Bruner of Surgoinsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Elmer Pendegraft of Surgoinsville; two grandchildren, Cindy Winegar and Angie Kleiboer; two great-grandchildren. KINGSPORT - Carolyn Carico, 64, of 1013 Catawaba Street, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. Carolyn was born May 15, 1937 in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Hobart and Viola Widener. She was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, a medical assistant and former office manager for Drs. Locke Carter, David Franzus, Ridgeway, Bales and Robert Jernigan for many years. She was a member of North Kingsport Church of God where she was very active; she taught Sunday School and was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the church and a former pianist for the church. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Ray Carico, of the home; two sisters, Eileen Collins, Kingsport, and Wanda McCormick, of Mississippi; a brother, Vernon Widener, Kingsport; a special friend, Retha Collins; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, having served last as Sgt. with Company "A" 50th armored infantry battalion. He attended Milligan College and Xavier College in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a sales clerk with D'Cury's and retired as clerk with Dave's Department Store in Norton. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church from its inception, having previously served on the Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. "Doc" Hobbs, 73, passed away unexpectedly at home Tuesday evening (Oct. 16, 2001). He was born February 13, 1928 in Scott County, Va. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from Penn-Dixie Cement Company after 46 years of service. Carl was of the Christian faith. He loved farming and raising cattle. Carl was a loving, faithful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and brother-in-law. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Donald was born in Pulaski, Va., a son of the late Lawrence D. and Rose Ella Smith Jennings. He retired from Mead Paper after 43 years of service. He was a member of the Boones Creek United Methodist Church. Laura Robinson, Pennington Gap, Va. PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Mrs. Laura Matilda Fugate Robinson died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at the Carter Hall Nursing Home. She was born on April 20, 1905 in Claiborne County, Tenn., to the late Dan Fugate and Martha Brooks. At an early age, Laura accepted Christ as her savior and was a devout Christian. She was a member of the Hoop Creek Baptist Church in Claiborne County. She taught Sunday School at Beech Hill Baptist Church for several years and faithfully attended Wells Chapel A.M.E. Zion until her health began to fail. Laura was a humble and virtuous woman in her Christian living. She had lived in Lee County for over 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Robinson in 1947; a daughter, Virginia in 1999; and by four sisters and four brothers. Surviving are three daughters, Oretta Hill of Cleveland, Ohio, Edith Smith of Lynchburg, Va., and Stella Grimes and husband, John of Cleveland, Ohio; one son, Msgt. Alfred Robinson, retired U.S. Army, of Petersburg, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Patty Snodgrass, Tazewell, Tenn.; devoted nieces and nephews, Freddie and Sophia Robinson and Marshall and Alice Beaty, all of Pennington Gap, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends. ROGERSVILLE - Thomas Howard Rogan, attorney, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center Wilcox Hall following a lengthy illness. He was 86. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church. Mr. Rogan was born Oct. 10, 1915 in Sullivan County but spent most of his life in Hawkins County. His roots go back to the founding fathers of Rogersville. His parents were Frederick Heiskell Rogan and Ellen Purcell Wilson Rogan, both of whom predeceased him, as did one brother, Lance W. Rogan, and two sisters, Mollie Rogan Livesay and Ailsie Rogan. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Margaret Lyons Rogan; one son, Dr. Frederick Heiskell Rogan II of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Mary Rogan) Eberly of Signal Mountain, and Alice Rogan of Nashville; one sister, Nell Rogan Phipps of Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues. KINGSPORT - Sam T. "Steve" Walker, 81, died Wednesday morning (Oct. 17, 2001) after an extended illness. Born in Green Mountain, N.C., he had resided in Winooski, Vt., most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Walker worked in construction until retirement in the mid-1980s. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Walker; grandson, Bobby Walker; three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Rita Walker, Kingsport; one daughter, Diane Rubio, Miami, Fla.; four sons, Ronnie Walker, Tampa, Fla., George Walker, Miami, Fla., David Walker, Kingsport, and Danny Walker, Miami, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Williams, Michigan, and Earlene Farnsworth, Jonesborough; one brother, Zeb Walker, Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Mildred Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ, 5836 Orebank Road, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664. Pearl Ward, 88, Rogersville. ROGERSVILLE - Graveside services for Pearl Ward, 88, who died peacefully Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001), will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens.
