12, 2001) at Indian Path Medical Center Hospital.
He was born in Honaker, Va., on May 23, 1921, to the late Avery and
Rosie Roman Bowen.
Selman retired from J.P. Stevens, Borden Plant, after 30 years of
service.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth
Sherling, Mary Bowen and Amy Bowen; brothers, Alvin, Clyde and
Charlie Bowen.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Bellamy Bowen, Church Hill; one
daughter, Darlena Sutherland, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Tonya
Culbertson, Valerie Dunn and Bo Sutherland, all of Kingsport; two
great-grandchildren, Lauren Dunn and Logan Dunn; several nieces and
nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Gene Falin
Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with the Rev. J.W.
Depew officiating.

- Jim Busick, 72, 952 Hamilton Road, went to be with the
Lord unexpectedly Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical
Center.
He was born in Greene County and lived most of his life in
Blountville. He was employed by Maple View Farms.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Mary Busick; and
one sister, Lucille Mathaney.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Busick, of the home; six daughters,
Patsy Gregg, Diane Taylor and Barbara Busick, all of Blountville,
Rhonda Edwards of Jonesborough, Patsy Busick of Kingsport, and Ruby
Busick of Hiltons, Va.; six sons, Bobby Busick of Blountville, Clyde
Busick and Ronnie Busick of Kingsport, Tommy Busick, of Maryville,
Darron Taylor of Church Hill, and Steve Taylor of Blountville;
several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.

JOHNSON CITY - William Lawrence (Larry) Cox, 79, of the Harmony
community, entered into heavenly rest Sunday (Nov. 11, 2001) at the
Veterans Affairs Nursing Home at Mountain Home, Tenn.
Mr. Cox was a Washington County native, and the son of the late
William Jones and Susie Keefauver Cox. He was a graduate of ETSU,
and was a building contractor and owner of the Larry Cox
Construction Company in Kingsport.
He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Mr. Cox was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ceola Wheelock Walker Cox; two brothers
and their spouses, Earl and Mae Cox, Fall Branch, and Fred and
Elaine Cox, Wheatherford, Tex.; three sisters, Louise Judd,
Cookeville, Eva and spouse, Dean Commer, Wichita, Kans., Virginia
and spouse, Bert Sutton, Monte Vista, Colo. He is also survived by
six nephews and three nieces; and 14 great-nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Gray Funeral
Home in Gray.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of the
funeral home with the Rev. Steve Pate and the Rev. Mike Oaks
officiating.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Veterans Affairs
National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn.
There will be military rites by the VFW Color Guard of Post No.

W. Dillow, 80, Atlanta
ATLANTA,
Ga. - Ralph W. Dillow, 80, departed to be with the Lord on
Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) at the Veterans Administration Medical
Center in Decatur, Ga.
He was born in Sullivan County, and resided most of his life in
Atlanta.
Mr. Dillow was a U.S. Army medic during World War II.
He caddied at the old golf and country club in Kingsport, where he
learned and perfected the game of golf. Mr. Dillow became a member
of the PGA in the late 1950's. He also qualified and competed in
numerous local and national tournaments in the Sammy Snead/Ben Hogan
era and was friends with both. Ralph was a teaching professional and
club pro at several country clubs in Georgia, Alabama and Virginia.
He later became a builder and built many homes in the Atlanta
Country Club estate area, Alabama, and Hilton Head, S.C.
Mr. Dillow was also a charter member of the Ridgefields Country
Club. As family and friends say good-bye, we say to you (Ralph),
"Keep those long, beautiful drives down the middle."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Bruce and Susie Mae
Culbertson Dillow; and two infant sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Fay Milhorn, California; Leta
Cunningham, Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Raymond Dillow,
Jonesborough, Kenneth Dillow, Kingsport, and William Dillow, St.
Augustine, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.
Military graveside rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at East
Lawn Memorial Park by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3.

GAP, Va. - Elmer Garrett, 71, passed away Monday (Nov.
12, 2001) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap.
Born on Ely's Creek in Lee County, Va., he was the son of the late
Andrew and Cornie Harber Garrett.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years. After retirement, he
was employed by Lee County Community Hospital for 18 years.
He was a member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Billie Jo Garrett,
on Feb. 5, 1987; and by one brother-in-law, Fred Irvin.
Surviving are one son, David Garrett of Danville, Ky.;
daughter-in-law, Kelly Garrett of Danville, Ky.; one daughter, Gwen
Fee and husband Anthony of Pennington Gap; three grandchildren,
Travis Fee, Kristin Fee and Leslie Ann Fee; four brothers, William

- Fred L. Hill, 62, passed away Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at
home after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a member of Waldridge Baptist Church and the Corryton Masonic
Lodge No. 321. He was an employee with Ennis Business Form for 35
years.
He was an avid U.T. sports fan and served as an usher for U.T.
football and Lady Vols basketball for over 30 years.
Mr. Hill devoted 30 years to coaching recreational youth baseball,
softball and football at Fountain City Ballpark.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest P. Hill, Kingsport.
Surviving are his loving wife of 44 years, Margaret Arnold Hill;
four children, Mark Hill and wife, Sheila, Donna Linginfelter and
husband, Tom, Richard Hill and wife, Jeni, Sherry Webb and husband,
Dale; 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Kevin, Ashley,
Whitni, Elisha, Spencer, Stacie, Brittany, Justin and Hunter;
mother, Velma Hill, Kingsport; brother, Danny Haynes and wife,
Chris, Gray; also Fred had an aunt, cousins, nieces and nephews,
several brothers and sisters-in-law and friends in Kingsport.

long illness.
She was born in Weber City, Va. She was a member of Prospect United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Ketron was a former employee of FW Woolworth, Montgomery Wards,
Parks Belk (where she retired in 1987).
She was a member of the Auxiliary VFW Post No. 3382 Colonial Heights
Color Guard.
Mrs. Ketron was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She
enjoyed her family, friends and had an outstanding personality.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred D. Harris; her
parents, Schuyler and Myrtle Vermillion; her brother, Harry
Vermillion; her sister, Cleo McNutt; and her brother, Charlie Enix.
Surviving are her husband, Stanley (Stan) Ketron; daughters and
sons-in-law, Janice and George Cole, Kingsport, Patsy and Rev. David
Chavoustie, Syracuse, N.Y, Nancy and John Frye, Jacksboro, Tenn.; a
son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Donna Ketron, Kingsport; a

Va. - Emmett J. Kilgore Jr., 87, passed away Monday (Nov.

He was a salesman and partner of the Kilgore Wholesale Grocery. He
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coeburn and a member of
the UCT.
Mr. Kilgore was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S.
Army.
He was the son of the late Emmett J. Kilgore Sr. and Erna R.
Kilgore. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Kilgore
Reece; and a brother, Willard D. Kilgore.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Tot Beverly Kilgore; two
brothers, the Rev. C.L. Kilgore and Verl W. Kilgore Sr., both of
Coeburn; several nieces and nephews.

- William Gassway "Bill'' Ledbetter died Sunday (Nov.
11, 2001) in Montequit, La.
Born Oct. 31, 1934 in Carroll County, Md., he was formerly from the
Surgoinsville area. He was a U.S. Army retired SFC after having
served 20 years in the military.
He professed faith in Christ at an early age and was a member of the
First Baptist Church of Surgoinsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry B. and Virgie Horne
Ledbetter; two brothers, Harry Ledbetter Jr. and Sherfey (and wife
Ruby) Ledbetter; and a son, Bobby David Ledbetter on Feb. 11, 1985.
Surviving are a son, William "Billy'' Ledbetter Jr. and wife Becky
of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Sandy Jeanne of Richmond, Va.;
grandson, Joshua; two sisters, Agnes Roberta (R.C.) Anderson and
Nannie Ledbetter, both of Rogersville; sister-in-law, Agnes "Harry

He was born in Kingsport and lived most of his life in Cooks Valley.
He was a member of Kingsport Methodist Church, and was a retired
carpenter by trade.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Opal Lewis
Moody; brothers, Clifton, Clay and Farris Moody; sister, Hazel
Moody; parents, Ed and Ollie Dillow Moody; and a
great-granddaughter, Summer Quillen.
Surviving are his brothers, Ray Moody Sr., Bill Moody and J.B.
Moody; and sisters, Louise Williams and Margie Jennings. Mr. Moody
is also survived by his six children, James W. Moody Jr., Shirley

- Frank B. Porter, 83, died Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2001) at
Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was born in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from Montgomery Bell
Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany,
France and England.
He was secretary and treasurer of Rentenback & Wright Inc. for 38
years. He was on the board of directors of Kingsport Boys Club. Mr.
Porter coached and refereed sports for many years. He was presented
the Medallion Award and Bronze Keystone Award from the Boys Club of
America.
Mr. Porter was inducted as a member of the Boys Club of Greater
Kingsport Hall of Fame. He received the Man-Boy Award, Coach of the
Year and Outstanding Service Award.
Mr. Porter started the Scholarship Endowment Fund and served as
committee chairman. He coached and refereed for the Kingsport Youth
Soccer Association and was instrumental in its inception.
He was active in the Meals-on-Wheels Program and attended the First
Baptist Church of Kingsport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Alexander Porter and
Minnie Bond Porter; two sisters, Mildred Porter Watson and Rebecca
Porter Looney; a son, Alan Daniel Porter.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Bailey Porter; two daughters, Terri
Porter Dinsmore and Trieva Porter Whitson; a son-in-law, Brian
Whitson; a son, Frank Bond Porter Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Dena
Williams Porter; two granddaughters, Sara Dinsmore and Elizabeth

Ms. Smith was the daughter of the late Ben and Lucille Estep.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter,
Jean Snelbaker; two brothers, Simon Ray Estep and Johnny Estep; two
sisters, Rhonda Boyer and Elva Estep; and two grandchildren.
Surviving are a daughter, Helen L. Anders and husband Virgil,
Kingsport; two sons, Philip Smith and wife Ronalda, Red Lion, Pa.,
and Randall Smith, Broque, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Williams, Greeneville, and
Susie Yokley, Granite City, Ill.; three special friends, Mae, Marie
and Beverly; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fall Branch
Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, and also at the home of the
daughter, Helen Anders.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home
chapel with Pastor Lester Morelock officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill
Cemetery.
Those who wish to attend the graveside service should meet at the
cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday.

- Alice McNeer Swann, 86, 1334 Belmeade Drive, died
Tuesday morning (Nov. 13, 2001) at her home after an extended
illness.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Carl C. and Peggy
(Shelor) Swann Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary (Swann) and Steve
Bebout; grandson, Eric Swann; sister-in-law, Marian Jones; and
several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Oak Hill
Funeral Home.

DUFFIELD,
Va. - Jerry M. Vaughn, 46, of the Mabe community, died
Sunday (Nov. 11, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Scott County, he was a son of Ida Vaughn and the late Bud
Vaughn. He retired from the Sherwood Press and was a former member
of the Duffield Fire and Rescue Squad.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother,
Clarence Vaughn.
Surviving are his wife, Sherri Diane Vaughn, Duffield; a daughter,
Mrs. Derrick (Tesha) Hensley, Duffield; a son, Mickey (Cindy)
Vaughn, Duffield; a granddaughter, Keila Vaughn, Duffield; his
mother, Ida Vaughn, Duffield; sisters, Mrs. Jay (Debbie) Egan,
Duffield, Mrs. John (Marie) Ramey, Duffield, Sue Burton, Hiltons,
Va., Mrs. Stevie (Bobbie) Payne, Duffield; brothers, Errett (Debbie)

(Mildred) Vaughn, Church Hill, Leonard (Ethel) Vaughn, Blackstone,
Va.; his in-laws, Chester (Jerri) Alley; sister-in-law, Mrs. James

Visitation will be held at any time today at the family residence
(Route 3, Box 256B, Mabe community of Duffield).
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Durham's Chapel
Church with Terry Rhoton and Rick Kincer officiating.
Music will be provided by The Durham's Chapel Quartet and Cleda
Sampson.
Burial will be in the McNew Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be friends and family.
The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village is in charge of the

CHURCH HILL - Services for Mary Magelene Vaughn, 89, of 285
Millerwood Road, who passed away Monday (Nov. 12, 2001), will be
conducted at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home,
Church Hill, with the Rev. Elmer Cleek officiating.
Burial will follow in Church Hill Memory Gardens.

B. Walker, 69, Johnson City
JOHNSON
CITY - James B. Walker, 69, 205 Woodbriar Drive, died Monday
(Nov. 12, 2001) in the Johnson City Medical Center following a
lengthy illness.
He was a native of New Orleans, La., lived in Jackson, Miss., for
over 20 years before coming to this area 21 years ago. He was a son
of Mayme Anderson, Johnson City and the late Houston Walker.
Mr. Walker served in the both the Air Force and Marines, four years
in each branch.
He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi.
Mr. Walker worked as a federal bank examiner for the Federal Home
Loan Bank. After retirement from that position, he worked as
compliance officer for Home Federal and then First Tennessee Bank.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he attended the
William Ridgell Sunday School Class.
While in Jackson, Mr. Walker had been active in the Shriners.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Jewell M.
Walker; a son, Kerry Walker, Germantown, Tenn.; two daughters,
Cheryl Walker Bradley, Arlington, Texas, and Amy Forrester, Johnson
City; a brother, Houston Enoch Walker, Pass Christian, Miss.;
sister, Mary Elizabeth Bourgeois, New Orleans; five grandchildren;
one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Morris-Baker Funeral
Home, Johnson City.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the South Chapel of
the funeral home with Dr. Ronald F. Murray officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the
Washington County Memory Gardens. Those attending this service are
invited to meet at the funeral home by 9:20 to go in procession to
the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
