Anthony Benton, 43, Kingsport. Anthony Benton, 43, Kingsport. KINGSPORT - Anthony Herbert Benton, 43, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after declining health. He was born in Washington County, Tenn. (Johnson City), and lived most of his life in Kingsport. He was a graduate of Ketron High School in 1976 and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed at Wal-Mart Stores in Florida prior to his failing health. He attended Doran Addition Freewill Baptist Church in his youth. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert H. Benton; and one brother, Herbert L. Benton. Surviving are his wife, Kathy Hartsock Benton, Kingsport; one daughter, Niki L. Goram and her husband, Jason, Lakeland, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Christy Marcincuk and her husband, Mike, Palm Bay, Fla.; one son, Joshua Benton, Kingsport; his mother, Iva Nell Wilson Benton, Kingsport; one brother, James Robert "Robby'' Benton, Kingsport; a special aunt, Charlotte Wilson Begley, Palm Bay, Fla.; two special close friends, Karen Bledsoe and Eric Bledsoe, both of Kingsport and two step-grandchildren. He was born in Scott County, Va. on July 2, 1920 and was the son of the late Bill and Arlene Collins. He retired from Westmoreland Coal and was a farmer. He was born Sept. 29, 1929 in Powell Valley, the son of the late John Gilly and his surviving mother, Nellie Gilly. Emory was a lifelong active member of the Powell Valley Presbyterian Chapel. As a young boy, he participated in the construction of the church and until his death served as an elder of the church. Emory worked for 42 years as a salesman for Pet Dairy in Big Stone Gap. After retirement, he worked part-time for Food City in Big Stone Gap, Va. ROGERSVILLE - Thomas Howard Rogan, attorney, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center Wilcox Hall following a lengthy illness. He was 86. Mr. Rogan was born Oct. 10, 1915 in Sullivan County but spent most of his life in Hawkins County. His roots go back to the founding fathers of Rogersville. His parents were Frederick Heiskell Rogan and Ellen Purcell Wilson Rogan, both of whom predeceased him, as did one brother, Lance W. Rogan, and two sisters, Mollie Rogan Livesay and Ailsie Rogan. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church. Mr. Rogan graduated from the University of Tennessee Law School in 1938, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi and the Law Review. He commenced practicing law in Rogersville in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 during WWII and served in the Counter Intelligence Agency until 1945. Upon being discharged from the Army, he moved to Greeneville to work for the law firm of Sunsong, Parvin & Fraker, until 1950, when he returned to Rogersville to practice. On June 21, 1951, he was appointed as the first criminal justice of the 20th Judicial Circuit of Criminal Court by then Gov. Gordon Browning, and, after being elected to this post, served as judge until he resigned in August 1955, to return to private practice in Rogersville where he remained in active practice through December 1999, participating from his home thereafter until shortly before his death in completing pending matters. Mr. Rogan was a member of the Hawkins County Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, the American Bar Association and was selected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in August 1979. He was still a member of the Committee on Admissions to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. On June 6, 1998, he completed 60 years of law practice and was honored by a reception in the Rogersville Courthouse given by the Hawkins County Bar Association and was presented a certificate of achievement from the Tennessee Bar Association. Two resolutions were proposed by the Hawkins County Court at the reception, the first renaming of the Hawkins County Chancery Courroom as "The Tom H. Rogan Chancery Courtroom'', with informative marker to be placed outside the courtroom, and the second declaring June 5th as "Tom Rogan Day'' in Hawkins County. He was one of the original founders of the First National Bank of Rogersville and acted as its first president. He was active in the Democratic Party, having served as chairman of the Hawkins County Democratic Party for several years and was presented a plaque in appreciation for his dedication and service to the party on Oct. 10, 1996. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Margaret Lyons Rogan; one son, Dr. Frederick Heiskell Rogan II of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Mary Rogan) Eberly of Signal Mountain, and Alice Rogan of Nashville; one sister, Nell Rogan Phipps of Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues. A private graveside service will be conducted at McKinney Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Rogersville with Father Thomas Vos officiating. Slagle, 71, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a son of the late Joseph S. and Minnie Mae Bridgeman Slagle. He was a teacher in the Bristol, Tenn. School System for 31 years and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Slagle was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bristol. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Slagle; and two brothers, Joe and Jim Slagle.
