- Billy Joe Baines, 75, passed away with leukemia on Monday
(Nov. 19, 2001) in the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Washington County, he was a son of the late Willie E.
and Pearl Ford Baines. He retired from ETSU and did volunteer work
for the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Mr. Baines was a Christian.
He was a member of the order of the Eastern Star, member of Sinking
Creek Masonic Lodge No. 575 of Gray, and Scottish Rite Bodies of
Knoxville. He was also a member of the Jericho Temple of Kingsport
and was a member of the director's staff in the Shriners.
Mr. Baines was a mall walker and also enjoyed riding his Gold Wing
motorcycle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda "Nip" Baines, Feb. 2001;
and sister, Wilma Walker, Nov. 6, 2001; and two infant brothers.
Survivors include his daughter, Jane Smith and husband Lyle, of
Gray; son, Eddie and wife Pam, also of Gray; two grandsons, Jason
Baines, and Eddie and wife Michelle Baines; one stepgranddaughter
and stepgrandson-in-law, Michelle and David Dixon; one
great-grandson, Ethan Baines; and one stepgreat-grandson, Eli Dixon;
brother, Niles Baines, of Gray; a host of friends; and his true
friend and hearing aid, Bullet.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Gray Funeral Home
Chapel, Gray.
A Masonic service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 8
p.m. today by Sinking Creek Masonic Lodge No. 575 .
Funeral services will follow in the chapel with Dr. Danzle Fink and
the Rev. E.W. Barnes officiating.
The committal service will be Friday in the Gray Cemetery.

Va. - John Wayne Bush, 66, entered into eternal rest
Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at Maple Grove Health Care.
Mr. Bush was born in Scott County, Va. on April 24, 1935, a sonof
the late Orbin Henry and Gertrude Lucas Bush.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Maxine Blair; a brother,
George A. Bush; two half-brothers and one half-sister, preceded him
in death.
Surviving are four daughters, Barbara, Kathy and Betty Wayne Bush,
all of Bristol, Va., and Brenda Bush, Nickelsville, Va.; three
stepchildren, Melissa, Tresea and Vanessa Mullins, Bristol, Va.; his
sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Lamar Colley, Haysi, Va.,
Iona and Willie Robinette, Nickelsville, Va., Alma Dean, Church
Hill, and Betty Prescott, Dungannon, Va.; one half-sister, Marie
Simpson, Florida; brothers and sister-in-law, Tommy and Wilma Bush,

STONE GAP, Va. - Edward J. Farmer, 79, died Tuesday (Nov. 20,
2001) at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Big Stone Gap, Va.
He was born in Boston, Ind., the son of the late James Frank Farmer
and Garnett Leonard Farmer. He had resided in East Stone Gap for
over 50 years. He was a former employee of the Clinch Haven Dairy
Farm and was retired from Westmoreland Coal Co.
He was a member of the UMWA District No. 28. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He
was of the Protestant faith.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Theda Jewel Daniel; and a
brother, Daniel Farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Imogene Swiney Farmer; two sons, Gary Farmer
and wife, Debbie, Big Stone Gap, Va., and David Farmer, of the home;
three daughters, Susie Garrett, Big Stone Gap, Va., Becky Farmer,
Johnson City and Cindy Farmer and friend, Frank "Crow" Thacker,

resided in Kingsport most of her life. She retired from Palace
Vending after many years of service.
Mrs. Haney was of the Methodist faith.
Her parents, Mary Hackney and Mac Wilhoit and one son, Larry Lane,
preceded her in death.

in Kingsport.
Mrs. Meade was a registered nurse for over 30 years and had worked
at Holston Valley Medical Center most of her career. She was a
loving mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Meade was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul M. Meade.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Casey
Johnson; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael "Pudgy" and Michelle

TITUSVILLE,
Fla. - Mitchell Clayton Penley, 76, passed away Friday
(Nov. 16, 2001) at his home surrounded by his family.
Mitch was born in Kingsport on Feb. 7, 1925, a son of the late Rufus
and Stella Penley. He was an active and devoted member of First
Christian Church in Titusville, where he served as deacon, elder,
trustee and building committee chairman. While he lived in
Kingsport, the family attended Morrison City Christian Church.
He served in the fourth division of the U.S. Marine Corps during
World War II, fighting on Iwo Jima, Saipan, Tinian, and the Marshall
Islands.
Throughout his life, he remained devoted to his family, his church
and his country. An incredible source of strength to family and
friends, he was revered for his honorable character, genuine
compassion and tireless efforts. His legacy includes a strong and
loving family, a thriving church, and a free nation.
In 1956, he joined the space pioneers in Florida, providing security
at Cape Canaveral with Pan American World Airways for 30 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother,
Luther Penley.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Helen Horne Penley, of
Titusville, and a native of Nickelsville, Va.; four daughters, Linda
Novick, Karen Zack, Priscilla Frazee and Michelle Kennedy; two
grandchildren, Joey Mitchell Zack and Jane Elizabeth Zack, all of
Florida; sisters, Dolphine Lyon and Jeanette Penley; a
sister-in-law, June Fields Penley; numerous nieces, nephews and
cousins living in the Kingsport area.
Calling hours will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the East Lawn
Funeral Home.

Born in Scott County, Va. (Gate City), she came to Kingsport at an
early age. She was of the Methodist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Herron and Hannah
Smith Herron; three sisters, Clara East, Mary Litton and Nell
Clayton; and two brothers, Erritt Herron and Cecil Herron.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy J. Johnston and wife,
Barbara, Kingsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Sam (Ruth)
Hicks, Kingsport; grandchildren, Debra Lawson and husband, Gary,
Linda McGill, Terry Johnston and wife, Pat, Michael Johnston, Dawn
Way and husband, Jack, Pamala Ferguson and husband, Darrell, and

- Inez S. Rhoten passed away Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at
Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy battle
with cancer. Her faith, courage and determination during her illness
was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She was born in Scott County, Va., but moved to Kingsport at an
early age with her parents. A graduate of Dobyns Bennett High
School, she was a football fan and loved to watch the band perform.
Inez was one of the early members of Watauga Street Church of Christ
(now Northeast Church of Christ). She attended faithfully until her
illness prevented her from going. She was able to fulfill a lifelong
dream of going to the Holy Lands and always enjoyed sharing this
experience with others.
Inez was a clerk with the United States Post Office, starting at
what is now the Kingsport Library, then moving to the main office on
Center Street. The last 10 years of her 44-year career was at the
Lynn Garden branch office.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who made home a
welcome retreat. Holidays were even more special because of the
family traditions she started. She loved to work in her flower
garden and created beautiful flower arrrangements. Her love of
gardening, family, history, music and traditions have been passed on
to her children and grandchildren who will always keep her memory
alive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde B. Stair (Dec. 31,
1931) and Stella Blair Stair (May 14, 2000); an infant sister,
Elizabeth Ann; special aunt, Nannie Blair; her first husband, John
B. Gilley (July 4, 1944) and their son, John B. (Ron) Gilley (Oct.
21, 2001).
She will be remembered by her devoted husband of 52 years, Jack F.
Rhoten; a daughter, Jackie Rhoten See and husband, Ron; a son, Bill
Rhoten and wife, Keena; four grandchildren, Bryan Gilley, Maryville,
Tenn., Jeanine Gilley Simerly and husband Eddie, Maryville, Tenn.,
Clay Rhoten and Olivia Rhoten, Kingsport; four great-grandchildren,
Justin Gilley, Nashville, Tenn., Alex and Aaron Simerly and Rachel
Gilley, all of Maryville, Tenn.; an uncle, Okey Frazier; many other
relatives and friends.

- Benny Steve Shankle, 57, of 1614 East Stone Drive, died
Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) in Holston Valley Medical Center after a
brief illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of Zola Grindstaff Shankle,
1778 Highway 91, Elizabethton, and the late Hurshell Shankle, who
died in 1970.
He was a 1962 graduate of Unaka High School and a 1969 graduate of
Steed College.
Mr. Shankle was a certified public accountant. He was a partner in
the firm of Dent K. Burk Associates, P.C. He was the current
treasurer of the Amputees in Motion, a member of the Appalachian
Chapter TSCPA, the Tennessee Society of CPA's, and the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He was a former member of
the Kingsport Downtown Optimist Club.
Mr. Shankle was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman
Grindstaff and Mr. and Mrs. I.F. Shankle.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a sister and
brother-in-law, Rebecca and Richard Yankosky, Frederick, Md.; two
nieces, Mary Amtsberg and her husband Michael, Douglasville, Pa.,
and Julie Yankosky, Frederick, Md.; one nephew, Matthew Yankosky,
Frederick, Md.; three aunts, Mrs. Edith Elizondo, Mrs. Edna
D'Andelet and Mrs. Bertie Shankle.
