            KINGSPORT - Josephine K. Ramsey "Josie" Alderson, 81, of Woodmont 
            Ave., passed away Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at her residence. 
            She was born in Dickenson County, Va., and moved to Kingsport in 
            1964. 
            She was a member of Morrison City Freewill Baptist Church. 
            She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene C. Alderson; her 
            parents, Daniel Ramsey and Hannah Blair Ramsey; two sisters, Agnes 
            White and Lurie McKinney; and one brother, Evan Ramsey. 
               
            Surviving are her daughter, Nina Myers and husband Garry, Kingsport; 
            sons, Eugene C. Alderson Jr. and wife Dora, Fairmont, W.Va., Roger 
            Alderson and wife Mary, Summerville, S.C., Larry Alderson and wife 
            Sue, Elizabethton, and David Alderson, Kingsport; sisters, Esther 
            Brooks, Arbutus Goins, Lockie Kilburn, Louvenia Austin, all of 
            Kingsport, Pansy Edwards, Knoxville, Edra Riner, Abingdon, Va., and 
            Margie Duncan Clinchco, Va.; her special friends, Ruth Hensley, 
            Monnie Baker, Sue Leach and Diane Rorrer; eight grandchildren; nine 
            great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

            Joe Baines, 75, Gray.

            GRAY - Billy Joe Baines, 75, passed away with leukemia on Monday 
            (Nov. 19, 2001) in the Johnson City Medical Center. 
            A native of Washington County, he was a son of the late Willie E. 
            and Pearl Ford Baines. He retired from ETSU and did volunteer work 
            for the Washington County Sheriff's Department. 
            Mr. Baines was a Christian. 
            He was a member of the order of the Eastern Star, member of Sinking 
            Creek Masonic Lodge No. 575 of Gray, and Scottish Rite Bodies of 
            Knoxville. He was also a member of the Jericho Temple of Kingsport 
            and was a member of the director's staff in the Shriners. 
            Mr. Baines was a mall walker and also enjoyed riding his Gold Wing 
            motorcycle. 
            He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda "Nip" Baines, Feb. 2001; 
            and sister, Wilma Walker, Nov. 6, 2001; and two infant brothers. 
            Survivors include his daughter, Jane Smith and husband Lyle, of 
            Gray; son, Eddie and wife Pam, also of Gray; two grandsons, Jason 
            Baines, and Eddie and wife Michelle Baines; one stepgranddaughter 
            and stepgrandson-in-law, Michelle and David Dixon; one 
            great-grandson, Ethan Baines; and one stepgreat-grandson, Eli Dixon; 
            brother, Niles Baines, of Gray; a host of friends; and his true 
            friend and hearing aid, Bullet. 
            The committal service will be Friday in the Gray Cemetery. 
            Pallbearers will be members of the Masonic Lodge No. 575. 
            Gray Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. 

            Nellie Bowen, 78, Duffield, Va.

            DUFFIELD, Va. - Nellie Bowen, 78, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 21, 
            2001) at Indian Path Medical Center.

            John Bush, 66, Dungannon, Va.

            DUNGANNON, Va. - Services for John Wayne Bush, 66, who entered into 
            eternal rest Monday (Nov. 19, 2001), will be conducted at 2 p.m. 
            Friday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of Gate City Funeral Home 
            with the Rev. Charlie Taylor and the Rev. G.W. White officiating. 
            Music will be provided by the Lee Smith Singers. 
            Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. 

            Graveside services will follow the service at the Lucas Cemetery,

            James F. Carroll, 86, Church Hill.

            CHURCH HILL - James F. Carroll, 86, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 20, 
            2001) at Indian Path Hospital. 
            He was born in Sullivan County and lived most of his life there. 
            Mr. Carroll was retired from Eastman Kodak. He enjoyed fishing and 
            was an active charter member since 1953 of Lynn Garden Evangelical 
            Presbyterian Church. He served as Elder Emeritus. 
            He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evangeline Carroll; his 
            parents, Nancy and Matthew Carroll; two brothers, Bill and Joe 
            Carroll; daughters-in-law, Donna Carroll and Carol Ann Carroll. 
               
            Surviving are his wife, Betty Mabel Carroll; daughter and 
            son-in-law, Sheila and Jack Rohr, Bristol, Va.; sons and 
            daughters-in-law, Fred and Martha Carroll, Michael Carroll, David 
            (Tom) and Betty Carroll, all of Church Hill; stepdaughters and 
            sons-in-law, Sarah and Steve Fields, Church Hill, Donna and Dan 
            Fleenor, Church Hill; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren;

            Emmitt Dingus, 71, Duffield, Va.

            DUFFIELD, Va. - Emmitt Wilmer Dingus, 71, went to be with the Lord 
            Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001). 
            He was born in Scott County, Va., on May 21, 1930 and was the son of 
            the late Bob Dingus and Cordia Bishop Dingus. He was retired from 
            Reynolds Uniform Rentals and had worked for five years at Warren 
            Funeral Home. 
            Mr. Dingus was a member of Pendleton Freewill Baptist Church. 
            In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, 
            Julie Mae Dingus; four brothers, Charlie, Troy, Roy and Orbin 
            Dingus. 
            Surviving are his wife, Barbara Turner Dingus, of the home; sons and 
            daughters-in-law, Hank and Patricia Dingus, Clinchport, Va., David 
            and Melissa Dingus, Weber City, Va., Wilmer and Cathy Dingus, 
            Kingsport; sisters, Rosa Vicars and Kate Chase, both of Kingsport, 
            Bobbie Sanders, Sue Puckett, Mary Carter, Faye Hall, Nellie Watson 
            and Helen Lawson, all of Ft. Blackmore, Va.; brothers, John Dingus, 
            Kingsport, Jim Dingus and Bill Dingus, both of Ft. Blackmore, Va.; 
            five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

            Puckett officiating.

            Edward Fleming, 69, Uvalde, Texas.

            UVALDE, Texas - Edward Fleming, 69, died at Uvalde Memorial Hospital 
            Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001). 
            A native of Dickenson County, he was a retired coal miner. He was 
            the son of the late Ralph and Cora Fleming. His parents and a 
            sister, Bobby Jean, preceded him in death. 
            Surviving are his wife, Ann Fleming, Uvalde, Texas; two sons, Terry 
            N. Fleming, Church Hill, and Chris Fleming, Mount Carmel; two 
            daughters, Deborah Crabtree, Bristol, Va., and Veronica Jennings, 
            Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Lewis Fleming and wife, Peggy, 
            Clintwood, Va.; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. 
            Calling hours are after 12 noon Saturday at Clintwood Bible Church. 
            Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with 
            ministers Mike Yates and Theo Yates officiating. 
            Burial will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va.

            Lorena R. Haney, 76, Lehigh Acres, Fla.

            LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - Lorena (Tina) Rutledge Haney, 76, went to be 
            with the Lord on Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at her residence. 
            She was a resident of Lehigh Acres for the last nine years, but had 
            resided in Kingsport most of her life. She retired from Palace 
            Vending after many years of service. 
            Mrs. Haney was of the Methodist faith. 
            Her parents, Mary Hackney and Mac Wilhoit and one son, Larry Lane, 
            preceded her in death. 
            Surviving are her husband, John W. (Bill) Haney, Lehigh Acres, Fla.; 
            one daughter, Tana Jones and husband, Dickie, Rogersville; one son, 
            Keith Lane, Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren; and three 
            great-grandchildren.

            Dale Hensley Jr., 69, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Dale Hensley Jr., 69, of 433 Belle Hollow Road, passed 
            away Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at the Holston Valley Medical Center 
            after a brief illness. 
            Dale was born Feb. 10, 1932 in Kingsport, a son of the late Harry 
            Dale and Edna Hensley. He was retired from Roberts Tire and 
            Recapping Company of Weber City, Va. 
            In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his wife, 
            Louise S. Reynolds Hensley. 
            Surviving are his daughters, Dana Cruickshank, Ortonville, Mich., 
            and Penny Harrison, Kingsport; a son, Danny Hensley, Kingsport; 
            seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Jo 
            Grills, Church Hill, Sue Jones, Kingsport, and Louise Peters, 
            Greeneville; brothers, Gene Hensley and Jim Hensley, both of 
            Kingsport, Wayne Hensley, Church Hill; several nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the East Lawn 
            Funeral Home. 
            Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the 
            funeral home with the Rev. Adam Knight officiating. 
            Entombment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the East Lawn Memorial Park 
            and Mausoleum.

            Mary E. Lester, 67, Bristol, Va.

            BRISTOL, Va. - Mary E. Lester, 67, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at 
            her home. 
            A native of Hawkins County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel 
            and Lillie Jones Christian. She moved to Bristol in the 1960's and 
            was a member of Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Lester was a homemaker 
            and a loving mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. 
            Included in survivors are a daughter, Lisa Franklin, Bristol, Va.; 
            five sons, Phillip Buchanan, Belmont, N.C., Tony Williams Sr., 
            Charles Williams, Jerry Williams Sr. and Troy Buchanan, all of 
            Bristol, Va.; three brothers; 10 grandchildren; 10 
            great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

            Bristol, Va. 
            Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the graveside in

            Mack Lipe, 92, Rogersville.

            ROGERSVILLE - Mack Earl Lipe, 92, went to be with the Lord Wednesday 
            morning (Nov. 21, 2001) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home following an 
            extended illness. 
            He was a charter member of East Rogersville Baptist Church, where he 
            had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and treasurer. 
            He was a member of Overton Masonic Lodge No. 5 F&AM. 
            Mr. Lipe had been an employee of the Kingsport Press for 23 years 
            and retired from the Town of Rogersville, having served as a police 
            officer and dispatcher. 
            He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Helton Lipe; a 
            son, Charles Raymond Lipe; parents, Charlie and Julia Lipe; and 
            three brothers, Willie Floyd Lipe, Sam Lipe and Ray Lipe. 
            Surviving are his wife, Ada Lipe, Rogersville; one daughter and 
            son-in-law, Margaret and Charles Thames, Rogersville; one son and 
            daughter-in-law, Mack Larue and Annette Lipe, Peoria, Ill.; 
            stepdaughter, Mary Douglas Muse, Gray; 11 grandchildren; numerous 
            great-grandchildren; two brothers, Claude Lipe and John Lipe, 
            Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

            John David Mann, 71, Crossville, Tenn.

            CROSSVILLE, Tenn. - John David Mann, 71, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 
            2001) in the Cumberland Medical Center. 
            Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was a son of the late Joseph 
            Patrick and Gertrude Russell Mann. He lived in Fredricksburg, Va., 
            for many years. After his retirement he lived in Jacksonville, Fla., 
            and Crossville. 
            A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he was a retired U.S. Air 
            Force Technical Sergeant with 22 years of service. He was also a 
            retired employee of the U.S. Defense Department with 20 years of 
            service. 
            He was a member of the Fredricksburg Baptist Church, the 
            Fredricksburg Masonic Lodge No. 4 A.F.&A.M., the American Legion 
            Post No. 55, and the Air Force Sergeant's Association. 
            Surviving are his wife, Marjorie W. Mann; one daughter, Jennifer M. 
            Sealy, Fredricksburg, Va.; one son, Capt. Stephen C. Mann, Merritt 
            Island, Fla.; one granddaughter, Danielle Sealy, Fredricksburg, Va.; 
            one stepddaughter, Joan Hash, Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Bessie 
            Glover, Winchester, Va.; two brothers, Charles Mann, Plymouth, 
            Minn., and Norman Mann, Stephens City, Va.; also five nephews.

            Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of the

            William Maultbay, 51, Whitesburg.

            WHITESBURG - William Elijah Maultbay, 51, went to be with the Lord 
            Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 20, 2001) due to an automobile accident. 
            He was a brick mason, carpenter and also worked for the Hawkins 
            County Highway Department. 
            He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Cheyanne Dakota 
            Maultbay; grandparents, Ransom and Gertie Housewright and Thomas and 
            Lona Maultbay. 
            Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Jean Coffey Maultbay, of the home; 
            daughter, Billie Jo Bowen, Surgoinsville; son, Dakota Maultbay, 
            Rogersville; one granddaughter, Chelsie Bowen; parents, William and 
            Geneva Maultbay, Surgoinsville; one brother, Matthew Maultbay, 
            Surgoinsville; one sister, Debbie Eaton, Church Hill; several nieces 
            and nephews and many loving family members.

            Mitchell C. Penley, 76, Titusville, Fla.

            TITUSVILLE, Fla. - Services for Mitchell Clayton Penley, 76, who 
            passed away Friday (Nov. 16, 2001), will be conducted at 2 p.m. 
            Friday in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. 
            Calling hours will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral 
            home. 
            Burial will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park with full military 
            honors conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 of 
            Kingsport. 

            Naomi Porter, 67, Castlewood, Va.

            CASTLEWOOD, Va. - Naomi Elizabeth Porter, 67, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 
            2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center. 
            Born in Dungannon, Va., she was the daughter of the late Harold and 
            Faye Salyer. She was a member of O.E.S. Chapter No. 28 of 
            Nickelsville, Va. She served on the board of Social Services in 
            Russell County, and was of the Baptist faith. 
            She was preceded in death by one son, Paul W. Porter; two brothers, 
            Bill R. Salyer and Harold Ken Salyer; and one sister, Carol Mabel 
            Salyer. 
            Surviving are her husband, Robert T. Porter, Castlewood; three 
            daughters, Jackie B. Stevens, Danville, Va., Connie P. Turner and 
            Barbara P. Hendrickson, both of Abingdon, Va.; three sons, Cuba H. 
            Porter, Castlewood, Charles R. Porter, Castlewood, and Thomas E. 
            Porter, Abingdon, Va.; six sisters, Della M. Blevins and Wilma Lou 
            Brashear, both of Defiance, Ohio, Nell R. Dockery and Leona I.

            ROGERSVILLE - Paul Howard Shanks, 59, went to be with the Lord 
            Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) due to an automobile accident. 
            He was a member of Spires Chapel Church and had been employed by 
            Hawkins County Highway Department for several years. 
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert and Bobbie Shanks; 
            wife, Florence "Flo" Williams; one brother, Donald Shanks; and one 
            sister, Evelyn Templeton. 
            Surviving are a special friend, Dorothy Hopkins, Rogersville; two 
            brothers, Glennon Shanks, Church Hill, and Lonnie B. Shanks,

            Marguerite L. Snyder, 82, Blountville.

            BLOUNTVILLE - Marguerite L. Snyder, 82, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 
            20, 2001) in the Greystone Health Care Center after a period of 
            declining health. 
            Marguerite was born Jan. 12, 1919 in the state of Michigan. She was 
            a daughter of the late Floyd and Virgil Straw, and was the widow of 
            Ivan F. Snyder. 
            She attended the Methodist church. 
            In addition to her parents and husband, Marguerite was preceded in 
            death by a daughter, Doris Snyder; granddaughter, Lori Jo 
            Sencenbaugh; and grandson, Keith Arthur; and her brothers and 
            sister. 
            Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Beverly Sencenbaugh, of 
            Florida; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Ida Snyder 
            Olin, and Rhoanne Snyder, both of Indiana, and Raymond and Kathy 
            Snyder, of Blountville; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, 
            nieces and nephews. 
            Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the East Lawn 
            Funeral Home. 
            Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with 
            the Rev. Rye Fleenor officiating. 
            Graveside service will follow in the garden of Everlasting Life II 
            in the East Lawn Memorial Park. 
            Pallbearers will be Carl Snyder, Allen Sencenbaugh and Chris Rouse. 

            David Earl Stanley, 45, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - David Earl Stanley, 45, went to be with the Lord 
            Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at his home after an extended illness. 
            Born in Kingsport, he had resided in Southwest Virginia most of his 
            life before moving back to Kingsport ten years ago. 
            He retired as a heavy equipment operator due to poor health. 
            Mr. Stanley was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church. 
            He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Hardin Stanley. 
               
            Surviving are his wife, Sheila G. Stanley, of the home; three 
            daughters, Sheila N. Kilgore, Coeburn, Va., Cindy E. Deitz, Big 
            Stone Gap, Va., Shawna R. Stanley, Big Stone Gap, Va.; one 
            stepdaughter, Mrs. Rickey (Jana) Rollins, Church Hill; four 
            stepsons, Richard O. Wood, Bristol, Tenn., Michael S. Wood and wife 
            Misty, Gray, Ben T. Wood and wife, Meredith, Knoxville, and Charles 
            Bryant and wife Danielle, Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren; 11 
            stepgrandchildren; father, Charles Cecil Stanley, Pennington Gap, 
            Va.; two sisters, Brenda Lloyd, Bristol, Va., and Janice Stanley, 
            California; four brothers, Ron Stanley, Norton, Va., James Stanley, 
            Gate City, Va., Dennis Stanley, Front Royal, Va., and Paul "Corky" 
            Stanley, Gate City, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and special 
            friends, Tom Lloyd, Chuckey, and Ernest Maggard, Big Stone Gap, Va. 
            Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Hamlett-Dobson 
            Chapel, downtown. 
            Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home 
            chapel with Pastor Stanley Sims officiating. 
            Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at East 
            Lawn Memorial Park.

            Deborah Ruth Strong, 92, Gate City, Va.

            GATE CITY, Va. - Deborah Ruth Strong, 92, passed away peacefully 
            Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. 
            Born in the Union Temple community of Greene County, Tenn., she was 
            the daughter of the late Dr. John Calvin Marshall and Minnie 
            McCollum Marshall Ratliff. 
            She was a graduate of Doak High School and Tusculum College, and 
            taught in several Greene County schools. 
            In 1945, she married and moved to Gate City, Va. She served as 
            church organist for Gate City Methodist Church and First Baptist 
            Church of Gate City. She was a member of Union Temple United 
            Methodist Church, the Greene County and Tennessee Retired Teachers 
            Association. Her interests included her family and researching 
            family history. 
            Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, 
            Homer F. Strong; three sisters, Trula Marshall, Anna Babb and Nova 
            Hartman; three brothers, Vivian, Cecil and Oren Marshall; her 
            stepfather, John Ratliff. 
            Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Jack Taylor of 
            Yuma, Va.; two grandsons and their wives, Ty and Misty Taylor of 
            Gate City, and Brad and Rebecca Taylor of Monroe, N.C.; one 
            great-grandson, Darren Ross Taylor of Monroe, N.C.; one brother, 
            Robert Marshall of Greeneville; several nieces and nephews. 
            The Rev. Paul Blessing will lead a graveside service at Union Temple 
            Cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday. 
            The family will receive friends immediately following the service in 
            the church fellowship hall. 
            Friends may also call anytime at the home of the daughter in Yuma, 
            Va. 
            Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of the 
            arrangements. 

            Harry I. Wilson, 73, Kingsport.

            KINGSPORT - Harry I. Wilson, 73, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at his 
            home after a brief illness. 
            Harry served as a volunteer at Indian Path Medical Center for seven 
            years, and was a member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. 

               
            Surviving are his wife, Barbara (Bobbie); two daughters, Mary and 
            Christie; a brother, Richard (Titusville, Fla.); and a sister, Joan 
            (Paw Paw, Mich.). 
            The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Colonial 
            Heights United Methodist Church. 
            The memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the church. 
            In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Colonial Heights United 
            Methodist Church Capital Campaign Fund.
